A reminder that safety is the most important thing to consider while
performing our jobs.
•We need to use the safest work practices we can and do not take shortcuts.
•Follow lock out tag out procedures and make sure the equipment is De-energized.
•Wear the proper personal protective equipment, follow the MSDS recommendations.
“We as individuals are responsible for our safety”

CavatitionIdentifying A potentially
serious problem.

What cavitation is?
What Problems arise from it ?
What kind of damage cavitation causes.
The objective of this presentation is to demonstrate.

Cavitation is a common occurrence but, is the least understood of all pumping problems. It can result in loss of production, equipment damage, and worst of all,
Personnel Injury.

What is Cavitation ?
• The formation of and then Immediate Implosion of Vapor Bubbles within a liquid.

Definition of Implosion.
The opposite of explosion, implosion concentrates matter and energy.
An explosion is a rapid increase in volume and release of energy in an extreme manner.

Cavitation in Action.

Two types of cavitation
1. Suction.
2. Recirculation.
![Page 9: Pump Cavitation](https://reader030.vdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022012311/55a3ad961a28aba2368b45a0/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
12/6/2012 9
Suction Cavitation - is caused by inadequate suction pressure.
Pump Suction
![Page 10: Pump Cavitation](https://reader030.vdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022012311/55a3ad961a28aba2368b45a0/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Damage Caused by Suction Cavitation
Damage to the impeller eye, vanes and face.

![Page 11: Pump Cavitation](https://reader030.vdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022012311/55a3ad961a28aba2368b45a0/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)

Recirculation Cavitation - is caused by low flow through the pump this occurs at suction or discharge of the pump.
Pump Suction
Pump Discharge
![Page 12: Pump Cavitation](https://reader030.vdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022012311/55a3ad961a28aba2368b45a0/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Damage Caused by Recirculation Cavitation.
Damage to the outside of the impeller, on the outer periphery.

![Page 13: Pump Cavitation](https://reader030.vdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022012311/55a3ad961a28aba2368b45a0/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Now we have a balance problem with the rotating assembly.
12/6/2012 13
![Page 14: Pump Cavitation](https://reader030.vdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022012311/55a3ad961a28aba2368b45a0/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
12/6/2012 14
•The bearings will experience higher loading that will translate to premature failure.
When rotating components are out of balance.
![Page 15: Pump Cavitation](https://reader030.vdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022012311/55a3ad961a28aba2368b45a0/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
12/6/2012 15
•The mechanical seal faces can separate because of the induced vibration and shaft run out.
When rotating components are out of balance.
•The seal faces can become damaged as the vibration causes the carbon to bounce against the hard face.

Now we have a maintenance problem.
