CultivationThe "Styrian oil pumpkin" (Cucurbita pepo var.

styriaca, also known as var. oleifera).

The Styrian oil pumpkin grows in a warm and temperate climate. They are ripened and harvested in the fall

1 hectare =16000 pumpkins = 400 - 900 kg seeds. 1 pumpkin = 400-700 seeds=0,6 – 0,9 kg oil

These pumpkins have a yellow/green skin and yellow/orange flesh inside. Contain seeds that are dark green and that do not have an outer shell.

Yellow-fleshed and orange-colored pumpkins in the fields show the farmers at the right time of maturity.

Black oil Pumpkin seed oil looks very dark green. Taste intensive with a little nutty flavour. Used as salad oil with apple cider vinegar. Also a lot of recipes for cakes, sausage, salad, noodle

salad...

Original Styrian salad dressing- 60 ml apple cider vinegar- 30 ml pumpkin seed oil- a little bit salt

Styrian pumpkin soupCut a small onion in thin pieces and then roast it with butter. When it is golden brown add the flesh of a yellow pumpkin, which you cut before in pieces of 20 millimetres. Then roast it for 1 minute. Give water to the soup and cook it for 10 minutes. Then take the mixer and mix everything. Add the spices - I prefer salt, pepper, a little bit chilli currypowder, 3 tbl spoons vinegar and 5 tbl spoons of pumpkin seed oil. Mix everything a second time and serve it.For decoration add some pumpkin seeds.

… and effects on consumptionOne single seed: absorption of one part of the 17 essential

minerals

Linoleic acid: lower cholesterol level

Unsaturated fatty acids: regulate lipids metabolism

The specific components are known to prevent breast cancer from spreading and prostate problems.

A lot of antioxidant against the free radicals in the blood helps to keep young and healthy.

Keep the oil cold, you should not heat it in order to protect the healthy ingredients of this oil. When it is heated it only

tastes good and has no healthy aspect.

Objectives of the Program

Page 13: Pumkin Seed Oil

Criteria of the Program• Material must be of high quality• Raw material must originate from the region• Material must be produced by family farms in

the area• Material must be consumed in the area• Region must host cultural events promoting

the material

The modernisation modelNeo-classical economics: Farm = Company

Competition with other farmers.Lowering the costs = economy of scaleLowering the costs = specialisation

Mobilising resources through markets Farm versus agro-industries Specific technology

Segregation of agriculture from other rural activities

Farmer = producer of raw materials for agro-industrial food chains

Page 18: Pumkin Seed Oil

The problem with the modernisation model

European trend:Stagnation of product pricesProduction costs increase

COST-PRICE-SQUEEZE Low margins per unit of end product

How to deal with this?1. Further increase of scale of operation;

intensification of the production2. Alternative development path: RURAL

DEVELOPMENT

Page 19: Pumkin Seed Oil

Conditions for the rural development modelThe activity must be a response to the cost-price-

squeeze on agriculture. Small scale production, alternative development

path. The activity is to express new relationships

between agriculture and society at large, reflecting the wider population’s needs and expectations.

Local farmers oil mill local population and other visitors

The activity implies a redefinition and/or recombination of rural resources.

Pumpkin multiple products and purposes

Page 20: Pumkin Seed Oil

The rural development modelShift of the focus: production of cheap food

provision of public goods and servicesNew interrelations

With other farm enterprises Langmann vineyard, local pumpkin farms.

With different segments of the rural and urban population tourism, local social life (restaurant, concerts, shop), connection with the major.

Page 21: Pumkin Seed Oil

Reducing the dependence on external markets: re-using part of the total production on the farms.

Fertilizer (cake)

Page 22: Pumkin Seed Oil

Diversification of the farm activities beyond the production of raw materials

Agri-tourism

Production of high quality and region-specific products: pumpkin seed oil, pumpkin seeds; connection with the wine production in the area (store with local products)
