Founded in 1809, Giles County is a progressive area with a strongsense of pride in its heritage. With a population of 30,000 Giles Countyis small enough for neighbors to know one another and large enough to offer a richquality of life. Pulaski, the county seat, is centrally located and has a population of over9,000. For more than a decade the community has beenthe recipient of the prestigious Governor’s Three StarAward for educational and economic excellence.

The necessities of daily living are availableat locally operated and national chain storesand restaurants throughout the county. Quaintshops, bed and breakfast inns and comfortablemotels serve visitors. There’s even an airportfor private planes and company jets. Familydoctors, specialists, nursing homes, assistedliving facilities and medical complexes servethe community’s health care needs. The MilkyWay Farm and Mansion, built during thedepression by Mars Candy Co. founder FrankMars, hosts corporate retreats.

In addition to local theatrical, musical andhistoric offerings, major cultural andentertainment opportunities are within anhour’s drive from Pulaski. For example, Pulaskiis:

55 miles south of Franklin with itslarge business complexes, year-roundsports facilities, large mall-centeredshopping district plus dozens ofentertainment hot spots.

In addition to Pulaski, namedan All American City in 1993, thecounty has four other incorporatedcommunities: Minor Hill, with apopulation of 437; Elkton, a townof 510; the Alabama border town ofArdmore with 1,082 residents; and historicLynnville with a population of 345.

Four seasons ofoutdoor recreation

Outdoor enthusiasts enjoy hunting thelarge populations of deer and turkey aswell as other game animals and birds;fishing and boating in local waters, alongthe nearby Tennessee River and in arealakes. They may receive free hunter safetyinstruction; join local chapters of numerousnational outdoor hunting and fishingassociations; participate in AKC caninefield events and old-fashioned ham andturkey shoots or practice at public shootingactivities and ranges. Others spelunk thearea caves and explore the terrain withATVs and 4-wheel vehicles.

Educational opportunities

Giles County is a family-oriented communitywith more than 4500 children. There are eightschools in the K-12 public system with anaverage pupil-teacher ratio of 20:1, and teacherswho really care. The county has recentlycompleted a massive building and expansionprogram. The schools offer computer labs,accelerated reading programs and a variety ofsports. Other educational offerings includenumerous pre-schools, an active home-schoolgroup, a privateelementary and highschool, TennesseeTechnology Centerof Pulaski, andMartin MethodistCollege, a quality 4-year liberal artscollege founded in1870.

Residents and visitors can enjoy five publiclibraries; local arts association theatricalproductions; swimming; golfing; a countryclub; 4-H, homemaker clubs and farmingorganizations; dance and music lessons; youthsports teams including soccer, t-ball, football,basketball, baseball and softball, tennis; foxhunting, riding schools and clubs, trail riding;civic, professional, social and special interestorganizations for men, women and youth;festivals and parades in the county’s five cities;numerous churches and a monthly gospelsinging.
