    Puffed Sleeve Tutorial

Unfortunately, finding a sewing pattern that includes puffed sleeves can be somewhat difficult.

So, this is for everyone who has needed a puff sleeve when there's not a pattern to be found.

My challenge was taking the below pattern for an Edwardian Style gown (Simplicity !"#$ that had thebodice portion % wanted with a short straight sleeve and modifying it into a puffed sleeve (with a

gathered bottom$ for my &eopets ooth aerie cosplay.

% wasn't able to find a ton of helpful information on this through my internet searching, and so decidedto put together this tutorial detailing e)actly how % went about the alteration process for anyone else

that might possibly need it. *+

Step # 1 -s you will need to alter the original pattern piece to make it into the puffed sleeve, cut out

the straight sleeve pattern piece (from whatever pattern that you are using$ and then trace andcut out a copy of this onto another piece of paper.

Step # 2:Using your ruler, divide out the copied pattern piece into parts. /arts 01# in the middleshould all be the same width while parts " and on the outside edges will be wider. (his

will vary based on the si2e of the original pattern piece$

    Example: For mine, I divided parts 2,3,4,5,6, and 7 into 1.75 inch e!al pieces. "he o!tside ed#es 1

    and $ are %oth 3.5 inches &ide.

-fter dividing out the pattern piece into parts, draw a straight line in the widest part of the

pattern, below the curved portion. &ow, cut the pattern into the parts.

Step # 3: &ow that you have your pattern parts, get a large piece of paper (much wider than the

original sleeve pattern$ and draw a straight line across it (this will act as your guide for

    placing the pattern parts$.

&e)t, start taping the cut out parts onto the new paper, making sure that the line on thecut out parts matches up with the line on the new sheet of paper. % put "3 inch between allmy parts, but the width for this can vary depending on how small or large of a puff you want.

4ess width will make a smaller puff, more width between parts will make a larger puff.

My cat decided that he would make himself helpful for this part....

Step # 3 (cont.): -fter measuring and taping down all of your parts, you should have this (notice howthe lines all match up5$

Step # 4 he last step in making the puffed sleeve pattern is to make a new curve at the top andbottom, as shown below.

6ut out your new pattern piece and move on to cutting out fabric. -fter that, 7ust follow theinstructions that came with your original pattern for sewing the straight sleeve as these will

apply to the puffed one. here will 7ust be a lot more gathering than what would have been

needed to ease the top of the sleeve.
