What do we publish?

• Previously unpublished manuscript material (normally – printed under some circumstances)• Material illustrative of the history of Scotland and the Scots (defined broadly

– e.g. Scots abroad, diplomatic relations – needn’t be in a Scottish archive)• Full-length volume typically around 100,000 words (including c. 10,000 word

introduction) – but some flexibility depending on the material• Shorter items – can be considered for inclusion in Miscellany series• Scholarly editions with full annotation and critical apparatus

Submitting a proposal

Proposals should cover the following:i. Identification of MSS to be edited, including location. Rough approximation of length of volume.ii. Brief summary of nature and contents of MSS.iii. Brief comment on their historical significance and why they would make a useful edition. You might wish to refer here to any similar or relevant works in print.iv. Comments on the method of editing.

Also include a sample transcription, and if possible a representative image or two of the manuscript.

Feel very free to email the publication secretary if you want to discuss how to approach the proposal.

• The Scottish History Society is delighted to announce a call for applications for its annual prize of £350 to be awarded for the best transcription with historical introduction by a postgraduate student. The competition is open to anyone registered for any postgraduate degree at any university or anyone within five years of graduation with a postgraduate qualification.• Full details at
