(CASTL) The Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning
Supports development of a scholarship of teaching and learning that will: 1) foster significant, long-lasting learning for all
students;
2) enhance the practice and profession of teaching; and
3) reward and recognize faculty’s work as teachers.
Major initiative of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching in partnership with The Pew Charitable Trusts.

CASTL Project Origins and Future
Builds on American Association of Higher Education peer review of teaching project– worked to develop strategies for documenting teaching
and learning, and making such work "community property"
Builds on the earlier Carnegie reports:– Scholarship Reconsidered

Scholarship of Teaching/Learning– The review process should be more than just a
“classroom observation.”
Peer Review of Teaching Project –University of Nebraska, Lincoln
Combines – inquiry into the intellectual work of a course– careful investigation of student understanding and
performance, and – faculty reflection on teaching effectiveness
Key objective: mentor faculty to document, assess, & discuss the intellectual work in their courses & impact on student learning
Source: http://www.unl.edu/peerrev/index.html
Project Examples – Course Portfolios
A systematic, long-term approach Requires collection & analysis of student work. Faculty
– explore what is going on in their classrooms,– analyze their course objectives, – and document and assess whether what they want
to be happening is really happening.
