Like a LocalBy Peter Greenberg

When you come to the BEA in June, I hope you’ll join my panel discussion on “The Evolution & Revolution of Travel Guides: An Insider’s Look at Experiential, Immersive Travel and Pushing the Publishing Envelope.” As a contrarian traveler, I hope you also take time to get out of the convention center and explore some of the best that New York has to offer. Here are a few spots not far from the Javits Center.

Art & Culture Just off the High Line [see p. 38} you’ll discover the thriving Chelsea gallery scene. The Gagosian Gallery (555 W. 24th St., between 10th and 11th Aves.) always draws big names and offers the traditional New York art-lover experience. During June, a survey of the great Italian painter and sculptor Lucio Fontana will be on display. For a somewhat more cutting-edge exhibition, check out Jonathan Levine Gallery (529 W. 20th St., between 10th and 11th Aves.), which showcases the works of underground and emerging artists. Just a little farther south but still in Chelsea, you’ll find the Rubin Museum of Art (150 W. 17th St., between Sixth and Seventh Aves.). Brush up on your Buddhism and learn about Tibetan and Himalayan art at this small collection. Want to see where nonfiction books are born? Take a night off and head to an event hosted by the Moth (www.themoth.org), where you can listen to storytelling events throughout the city each week. Some of the biggest talent get their start in New York, and the 99-seat Ars Nova theater (511 W. 54th St., between 10th and 11th Aves.) is one of the best places to see emerging and alternative performers, playwrights, and comedians in an unpretentious, black-box setting. You also never know what A-lister might be there that night, as the Moth has attracted performances from everyone from Liza Minnelli to Daily Show writers. Most people will point you to Greenwich Village institutions like the Blue Note or the Village Vanguard for jazz, but there are plenty of alternate venues that are well worth a visit. Birdland (315 W. 44th St., between Eighth and Ninth Aves.) is an obvi-ous choice, but there’s also the classic Bar on Fifth at the Setai Fifth Avenue Hotel (400 Fifth Ave., at 36th St.), and a little farther south, Jazz Standard (116 E. 27th St., between Park and Lexington Aves.), located in the basement of Danny Meyer’s Blue Smoke barbecue joint, and often offers an early (8 p.m.) first set.

Local RefreshmentYou may need a little sustenance during these tours. Get a slice of real New York pizza at Artichoke Basille (114 10th Ave., between 17th and 18th Sts.), one of the most interesting new pizza joints in the city. Or head to Tia Pol (205 10th Ave., between 22nd and 23rd Sts.) for a quick tapas lunch or even an afternoon break—nothing will get you more energized than a glass of sangria and some patatas bravas. Enjoy the show.

Disney does it again: Newsies, a seriously charming tuner (with terri c terpsichorean talent), was recently resurrected from the 1992 op movie. Want brand-new? Nice Work If You Can Get It is a veritable hit parade of iconic Gershwin songs, starring Matthew Broderick and the fabulous Kelli O’Hara. Nonmusical fare: the Pulitzer-winning Clybourne Park, in which two families 50 years apart discourse on the explosive topic of race; excellent. A revival of Gore Vidal’s The Best Man boasts a star-studded cast tackling political shenanigans. That’s Entertainment. In case you’ve missed ’em, this enduring musical quintet is worth checking out (and tix are often easier to get than newer arrivals): Phantom of the Opera, Mamma Mia, Jersey Boys, Any-thing Goes, and Chicago (the longest-running show in Broadway history).Checking out sources. For an overall rundown on shows, locations, times, etc., pick up the current Time Out New York mag. Web sites offering info, discounts, and/or decent dish include BroadwayBox.com, Theatermania.com, and Playbill.com.
