Katie Couric, left, and Laurie David are behind the Aim that seeks to spread the word about a worldwide epidemic.

PAHK CITY, UTAH Katie Couric is fed up.

Like the t it le o f the documcn-ta i y she produced and narrated says, Couric is angry about the ^oba l epidemic o f chi ldhood obesity and the government's role i n its spread.

"The amount o f a t tent ion paid to public health is minuscule compared to the amount o f attent ion the government pays to promoting agriculture." Couric says.

One o f the most talked-about films at Sundance, Fed Up is described as the film that the food industry doesn't want people to see.

And i t could be the movie that w i l l change the way people th ink about eating.

The documentary about the

alarming spread o f obesity, directed by Stephanie Soechtig and executive-produced by Couric and Laurie David, was acquired for wor ldwide d is tr ibut i on by RADiUS-TWC.

I t details how, since the government issued its first dietary guidelines 30 years ago. the rale of obesity has skyrocketed. Generations o f kids w i l l live shorter lives than their parents. The film upends the conventional wisdom of why we gain weight and lays bare the mis in format ion put f o r th on how to lose i t I t reveals that far more people get sick from what they cat than anyone realized. A n d i t traces the history o f processed foods adding sugar and sweeteners to the i r ingredients.

"One i n three kids by midccn-tury i n this country are going to have type 2 diabetes." David says. " I could cry just saying that to you. " Adds Couric: " I n 1980. zero kids had been diagnosed w i t h type 2 diabetes. I t used to be considered adult-onset diabetes. A n d by 2010. it was close to 57.000."

Fed Up intersperses stories of

die efforts o f si /erweight kids fitting an uphiU batt le to lose w e i ^ t using t rad i t iona l diet and exercise methods. A m o n g them are a 12-year-old g i r l wdio weighs 212 pounds and a 15-year-old, 250-pound boy.

" I t was very diff icult to cast, because you're dealing w i t h minors and w i t h teenagers who are i n credibly insecure, and you're asking them to talk about something so personal," d irector Soechtig says. "They were so candid."

Couric hopes the film w i l l br ing about amended personal habits and public policies. " I th ink i t w i l l change the way people buy food. I t w i l l change the way they consume food, and it w i l l change the way they t h i n k about food," she says.

The hope is that a shift can occur, as i t has i n other heal th and safety arenas. " M y brother and 1 used to flush my mom's cigarettes down the toilet when we realized that they were so hazardous to her health." Couric says. "And I th ink we can inspire a whole movement by kids for kids."
