EDITOR, RADIO BROADCAST, Garden City, Long Island. DEAR SIR: My attention has recently been called to an article published in the RADIO BROADCAST by Professor J. H. Morecroft under the title "What Every One Should Know About Wire- less and Its Makers." In this article i find mention of my invention of the Audion and several references to the Audion which are by no means in accord with the facts. I am per- suaded that Professor Morecroft in no way intended to do an injustice to me or your read- ers, and will himself in all fairness welcome a brief statement on the genesis of the Audion. From time to time the statement has ap- peared, as in the case of the Morecroft article, in effect that in my invention I contributed the grid to a rectifier or two -element vacuum tube, and thereby created the Audion or the three -electrode vacuum tube, the present heart and soul of radio communication. What could be more simple in the way of an explanation? What at the same time further from the truth and still further from a knowledge of the simple facts of radio principles? Professor Mbrecroft says: " It seems strange that Fleming did not at once jump to the idea of the Audíon, but the history of science is full of just such occurrences-a worker on the point of making an important discovery, yet missing it by the merest chance." Had Fleming thought of the grid, had he inserted it in the Edison Valve, he would have had exactly what he did have, a rectifier-but with a grid -shaped anode-nothing more. Had I come to this stage by the route Fleming fol- lowed, I should have done exactly as Fleming did-missed it exactly as he missed the Audion. To recognize that the anode battery circuit is as essential a feature of the Audion as is the third electrode, that by virtue of this local energy alone is the Audion a relay device and therefore an amplifier of transcendent value, instead of a mere rectifier of received alternat- ing current-seems such a simple proposition, so self -apparent, that I have always been at a loss to understand why any one should fail to grasp it. Yet such is the very common position of many writers: "The Audion is the Fleming valve with a third electrode." "Its inventor improved the Fleming valve merely by the addition of the grid." I doubt if such mis- leading stupidities were elsewhere ever preached in the history of the electrical art. Add a third, or any number of electrodes to the Fleming valve and it remains the Fleming valve --a mere rectifier, possessing the utility of the rectifier and nothing more. It is too bad to get so far along with the con- struction of a set and then omit those finishing touches that make it a pleasure to look at and to operate. As crudely finished apparatus is generally the result of a lack of knowledge of the processes and materials needed rather than to lack of interest or carelessness, a few practical pointers may prove helpful. At the outset, it cannot be emphasized too kstrongly that a clean, smooth exterior is necessary in order to get a first-class finish, whether the wood is to be painted, enameled, oil -finished in natural -colored woods, or varnished. The first thing to do is to decide what kind of wood the box is to be made of, whether it is open- or close -grained, and also whether it contains any sap, as such conditions will make necessary different methods of work- ing. Open -grained woods include: Oak, ash, chestnut, walnut, mahogany, and butternut. These require fillers. Close -grained woods include: Pine, cherry, maple, birch, cypress, whitewood, poplar, sycamore, beech, and redwood. These and others like them do not need fillers, but can be finished in natural colors or stained, as pre- ferred. Five operations in wood finishing are needed: sandpapering, staining, filling, varnish- ing, and polishing. First, plane the wood as smooth as possible. Then tack a piece of No. oo sandpaper on a level block of wood and rub with the grain, using moderate pressure and taking care when work- ing near the edges, not to round them. Wipe all dust from the surface with a cloth; if any remains, rough spots in the finished product will result. Staining comes next, if pine or poplar are used to imitate the appearance of more costly woods. From time to time the statement has ap-peared, as in the case of the Morecroft article,in effect that in my invention I contributedthe grid to a rectifier or two -element vacuumtube, and thereby created the Audion or thethree -electrode vacuum tube, the present heartand soul of radio communication. What couldbe more simple in the way of an explanation?What at the same time further from the truthand still further from a knowledge of the simplefacts of radio principles?

FLECTRICAL experimenters can makeneat -looking cabinets, but often falldown in their finishing work. It is toobad to get so far along with the con-struction of a set and then omit those

finishing touches that make it a pleasure tolook at and to operate. As crudely finishedapparatus is generally the result of a lack ofknowledge of the processes and materials neededrather than to lack of interest or carelessness,a few practical pointers may prove helpful.

At the outset, it cannot be emphasizedtoo kstrongly that a clean, smooth exterioris necessary in order to get a first-classfinish, whether the wood is to be painted,enameled, oil -finished in natural -colored woods,or varnished. The first thing to do is todecide what kind of wood the box is to be madeof, whether it is open- or close -grained, and alsowhether it contains any sap, as such conditionswill make necessary different methods of work-ing.

Open -grained woods include: Oak, ash,chestnut, walnut, mahogany, and butternut.These require fillers.

Close -grained woods include: Pine, cherry,maple, birch, cypress, whitewood, poplar,sycamore, beech, and redwood. Then I got a DeForestF5 Delux with built in speaker. Italso has all original DeForest tubes.Sure does work well. I have sold alot of sets also. Not bad for acountry boy.

On my A K 5A breadboard, thefactory sticker says printed Sept.1923. So, I believe that the 5!:iwas a genuine production model forlast quarter of 1923 and 1924. Nolist has said so as of now. ThoughtI would pass along this bit of in-formation.

The evolution of the Audion patent claimsmarks, in a general way, the evolution of theAudion-first it was a gas effect in the open air,then in an enclosed vessel, then in an exhaustedvessel, exhausted like an incandescent lamp-then to higher and higher degrees of vacuua(as early as 1912 1 employed an X-ray vacuum)But always it was a relay. Always the "B"battery was employed. The control electrodeidea even preceded the enclosed vessel. Andnever was the Audion " the Fleming valve withmerely a grid added."

Professor Morecroft continues: "The thingwhich he (De Forest) actually did, namely, theinsertion of the third electrode into a Flemingvalve, was a most wonderful contribution tothe radio art." It was not. Remember thata mere valve with three electrodes is still only avalve-with one electrode too many.

Unfortunately, prior to the year 1917, verylittle, indeed scarcely anything at all, appearedin radio history concerning the Audion art, al-though nearly a decade had elapsed since myfirst patents were granted on the Audion. It

look as if an expensive natural -colored woodwere used. In wood finishing, much trouble inworking will be avoided by the purchase of thebest stains and materials obtainable. Thereare two kinds of stains on the market: waterand oil stains, each having their good points.Oil stains are those in which the coloringpigment is dissolved in linseed oil or turpentine;,water is the solvent for the other. As pithwood in some cases has more or sap, this,wood, after being colored with an, ;Qr.water-stain . when dry,should have two coatsof white shellac var-nish applied, eachcoat to be lightlysandpapered afterdrying.

This shellac coatingeffectually keeps anysap from discoloringthe finish; varnishing,rubbing down, a n dpolishing can thenfollow. The best wayto use water- or oil -stains is to apply themwith a brush and then rub them into thewood with a piece of cheese -cloth. This dis-tributes the color evenly and absorbs surplusmoisture (which in the case of water -stainsis apt to raise the grain of wood, thus mak-ing more sandpapering necessary) and alsomakes a uniform color tone. If the firstapplication does not give as deep a coloras is desired, give it another one. If you wantto use an open -grain wood, such as mahoganyor walnut, and use a stain to make it deeperin color, the pores will have tó be filled afterstaining. Otherwise staining can be omitted;but the filling is necessary. Supposing thatsuch a wood has been stained; get a pastefiller of a color to match the stain as nearly aspossible; put some filler on a small piece ofcotton cloth and rub it on the wood. As soonas this filler has dried a little (don't let it gethard) continue to rub the surface until allpores have' been filled up, rubbing off thesurplus, the idea being to have nothing but thepores contain filler.

After it is dry and smooth, give it a coat ofwhite shellac varnish. This should be ratherthin, and may be diluted with alcohol ifdesired. All surplus varnish must be wipedoff the brush before applying it to the surface,for if too thick a coating is applied, it will not

There is no excuse, however,why, at this late day, such an untruth shouldpersist in American radio history, above all,when the whole world is making use of theAudion in radio communication as well as inlong distance wire telephony and the successorsof these same English commercial rivals arenow operating under the original De ForestAudion patent licenses. In fact, their entireradio system, outside of the generators andaerials, is built around the three -electrode -anode -voltage vacuum tube.

be clear enough to allow the stain to show. Thefirst coat of shellac will take about three hoursto dry, after which you should apply anotherone. Rub the dried surface with fine sand-paper until the wood is smooth. Don't rub ittoo hard or you will cut through the shellac.Varnishing comes next. Good brushes shouldbe used as cheap ones are generally coarse andshed their bristles. The varnish must not betoo cold as this prevents it from flowing freely.Have only enough varnish on the brush to give

a .level ` coating whenit is brushed acrossthe grain. Finish offby rubbing lightly,with the grain, lettingit dry thirty hours,or until thoroughlyhard.

Purchase some FFgrade pumice stone ata paint store; likewisea rubbing felt. Dipthe latter into linseedoil, then into pumice

stone which will now adhere to the felt. Rubthe varnished surface lightly along the grain.Continue this process until all small depressionshave disappeared. This may be ascertainedby looking diagonally over the surface when itis held to the light. All hollow places will nowshow as dark spots. The surplus pumicestone should be carefully removed with a softcloth.

Give it another coating, of varnish and letit dry, then repeat the operation with thepumice stone. The cabinet will have a dead,non -glossy finish. Those who prefer a shiningpolish can easily obtain it by dipping a pieceof felt into linseed oil and into powdered rottenstone (to be bought at a paint store) andgoing over the surface in the same manner aswith the pumice stone. A higher polish canbe obtained on the last coat by giving it therotten stone treatment, and then rubbing thehard varnish with a soft cloth dipped intolinseed oil, using plenty of "elbow -grease"until a high polish is obtained. The surplusshould be wiped off with a chamois skin. Theabove gives a durable finish; one that will notscar easily.. If all the work has been donecarefully, you will have a neat -looking cabinetthat will be envied by your friends who havenot learned polishing work, which is quiteeasy when you know how to do it.

IMPORTANCE OF USING CORREC1NEEDLEIt might be well at this time to illustrate by

the accompanying sketches, the types of groovesnow in general sise in instantaneous recordingand call to the attention of the user that theselection of the proper needle has a very definitebearing upon hiss level and general performancein playback, likewise the life of the record.

Figure 2A shows a groove with a sharp or Vbottom, and a playback needle with a roundpoint having a radius at the point of approxi-mately 0.002 -in. Note that the point of theneedle bears above the bottom of the groove andactually rides on the side walls only. Figure 2Bshows a groove having a bottom curvature, cut bya stylus having a radius at the exact point of0.002 -in., being played -back by a sharp -pointedneedle.

A study of these illustrations reveals that useof the combination shown in Fig. 2A shouldmean reproduction without groove hiss; and amaterial extension of the life of the acetaterecord. On the other hand, it will appear to eventhe casual observer that the sharp -pointed needleshown in Fig. 2B will pick-up all of the hiss

SOUTHWEST VINTAGE RADIOAND PHONOGRAPH SOCIETY

The members at the last meetingdecided to elect officers to servefor a certain length of time at thenext meeting, March 15, 1975. Pre-sently, they have only temporary of-ficers. !s one member said, "Any -

inevitably lying at the bottom of the groove.Further, accumulation of dust and foreign, par-ticles at the bottom of groove contribute to thegroove hiss so objectionable in most recordings.

A worthwhile suggestion would be that everyuser of acetate discs equip himself with amicroscope for examination of all record groovesand needle points, to make sure of properneedles in the playing of acetate discs.

If a record were played back as shown inFig. 2B, eventually the groove would be de-formed or roughened as illustrated in Fig. 2C,resulting in a decided increase in hiss level afterthe "rat playing, the roughened or fringed edgessetting up a hiss that would be very evident inthe speaker when the record was being played;and which would gradually increase with re-peated playbacks.

Of very great importance is the fact thatonly needles having the very finest polish shouldever be used on acetate. A rough point or pointsthat have become rusty will tear and roughenthe groove and side walls of an acetate record.

Needles that have once been played on astandard (or "commercial") shellac pressingshould never be used on an acetate record be-cause of the very simple fact that there is aslight abrasive in ordinary commercial recordsthat grinds the point of the needle to conformto the groove. The abrasive actually tears thesurface of the needle which if used to play anacetate will in turn tear and roughen the ace-tate groove. A needle in this condition actuallybecomes a cutting tool as will be readily per-ceived by examining its point under themicroscope.

SUMMARYMicroscopic examinations of hundreds of

acetate records have shown very conclusivelythat when not played on proper equipment hav-ing the features and details previously men-tioned, the results are an ironing -out orstraightening of the high frequencies-possibly"rubbed out" would be the proper term to use-as a result of being played back just once with

Dear Mr. Crenshaw;I really enjoy The Horn Speaker

newspaper, my main interests aremost anything in the way of wire-less sending and receiving apparatusbefore about the year 1924, dittofor phonographs. About now I amattempting to build a very longwave radio receiver that will tuneway down to 13,000 cycles, the bot-tom end of radio. I have a faircollection of antique radio setsthat use type UV201, type UV201-A,UX201-A , type WD -11, WD -12, UV199,UX199 and VT -1 tubes. A few ofthem are home brew sets. Most of

a pickup having a stiff or highly -damped arma-ture; or excessive weight or pressure on theplayback needle ; etc.

While it is fully appreciated that there arevarious shapes of grooves in general use theyall, however, follow the same general order inthat they are V grooves. Some have roundedbottoms and some have sharp bottoms. Regard-less of the radius of the bottom of the grooveor whether sharp or rounded, a playback needlesuch as shown in Fig. 1 having a bullet orball -bearing point, gives by far the moat satis-factory results in playback and long life to boththe needle and record.

If acetate records are to become popular andcommercially advantageous, they must be givenmore consideration in the matter of playback.

Simplicity and sturdiness of construction beingvital in a part as constantly used and handled as aphono pickup, in the commercial design used asthe basis of this article the well -understood mag-netic principle was retained; the constructionwas highly refined ; and, the parts, especially thearmature, were made dwarf -like by comparisonwith the older types. As an example, thearmature is only 25/64 -in, in length from pivotto end; and, complete, weighs only 0.825 -gram.Adjustment is easily understood by every tech-nician and Service Man, and no delicate toolsare required; which simply means that anyirregularity may be easily and quickly correctedwithout sending the part to some distant pointfor service.

The pickup here illustrated (Fig. 1A) anddescribed is not intended to be used as a tech-nical device, but rather to fill the urgent needfor a practical pickup capable of everyday usein the playing of cellulose and all other typesof records. It will give faithful reproductionat full volume; and its negligible wear ex-tends the usable life of records many timesover. An instrument such as described, with areasonable amount of care should give satis-factory service over a long period of time.

KINGS OF THE AIRWAYS

Radio madness reached its peakamong the affluent connoiseurs in thelast six years before World War II.The outstanding performance of E. H.Scott radio receivers was known theworld over and the era of custom in-stallations was flourishing.

It probably all started withseveral custom designed models of theAllwave Imperial. One example ex-ists today with a totally -different

custom console and special tuner withextended range to 80 MHz.

In 1935, the wife of a wealthycustomer commissioned E. H. Scott "tobuild for her, regardless of cost,the most perfect sound reproducinginstrument that could be designed."The result was the Scott Quaranta.This ¿40 -tube model was offered inthe December 1935 Scott News at1.2,500.00 - "completely installed inyour home by engineers from the Lab-oratory."

The Quaranta was housed in twolarge consoles. The first consolecontained the automatic record changerand tuner chassis. The tuner chassiswas almost identical to the tunerused in the Allwave Imperial. Thefour speakers and 20 -tube amplifierwere housed in the second consolewhich was very ornate with detailedwood carvings. The combined weightof both consoles was 616 pounds.

Two channels were utilized inthe Quaranta audio system. Eachchannel was rated at 50 watts (RMS)for a total channel -to -channel out-put of 100 watts. The mid -range andhigh frequency amplifier utilizedeight tubes and "handled frequenciesfrom 125 to 16,000 Hz." the bass am-plifier utilized twelve tubes and"handled frequencies from 30 to 1.25Hz."

The speaker system consisted ofa "mid frequency" speaker located a-bove the low frequency speaker, "sothat the fundamental frequencies ofspeech and music were reproduced atnormal height above the floor, andjust above ear level when sittingdown." Two high frequency speakerswere located at the top of the cab-inet with their sound being directedthrough exponential horns and difus-ing vanes. A volume expander was in-corporated in the Quaranta to "addvivid realism to music and voice."

At least two Scott Quaranta mod-els were built. A duplicate modelwas built by E. H. Scott --"for myown personal use."

With the introduction of theScott Philharmonic in 1937, custominstallations boomed. In an increas-ing number of modern homes of thatperiod, much of the furniture wasbuilt into the rooms. Scott receiverswere incorporated in many applicat-ions with the built in look. In many

of these custom installations, the re-ceiver dial and control knobs wereconcealed behind built in doors inlibrary and drawing room walls andeven under the stair steps in one in-stallation which I have seen.

Many owners had special customcabinets built which matched theirexisting furnishings. These cab-inets varied from ornate formal con-soles to relatively simple secretarydesks. I have seen an Allwave Imper-ial installed in a special home madedesk with glass panels through whichthe chrome -plated chassies could beseen.

Remote control systems were alsoavailable, providing a choice oftwelve different stations or switch-ing from radio to phonograph records.One such system was even installed ina plush yacht with remote control andspeakers in the master bed room, andon the sun and lower decks.

Remote speakers with special or-namental grills were used extensivelyin custom installations. Some moreelaborate systems featured remotespeakers in every room of the house.

Many of these kings of the air-ways are gone now. Many were built

in; they had no cabinets or consoles.They were "junked" in the remodelingof the fine old homes in which theywere once a vital part of the splendor.

Until very recently the general practice hasbeen to utilize the new tubes at their maximumcapabilities. Consequently, a slight change incharacteristics would greatly affect the opera-tion of the complete receiver. However, this19 tube set is designed to utilize its tubecomplement very conservatively, with the resultthat great stability has been achieved which,after all, is a major factor in securing satis-factory reception, especially on the shortwaves.

Note: it is inadvisable to attempt to realignthe set except as a last resort. The recom-mended procedure, only to be used by expertradio Service Men, is as follows:

To align the I.F. circuits feed the I.F.service oscillator test signal into the control -grid of V2.

When aligning R.F., I.F., or oscillator cir-cuits turn A.V.C. adjustment (slotted shaft)to extreme left. The I.F. trimmers are verycritical, greatly affect the performance of theset, and must be carefully resonated.

Aligning R.F. end Oscillator Circuits

Adjust A.V.C. control to extreme left posi-tion. It is unnecessary to remove the set oscil-lator tube. Align the circuits only in thesequence given.

To align the set oscillator turn its trimmerall the way out and then select the strongestsignal when turning it in ; set insensitivitynear the center of the dial will result if thewrong oscillator signal is used.

Bend the variable condenser plates for kc.dial alignment only in the broadcast band.Before adjusting any band, make certain thatthe pointer of the station indicator is set onthe last black line when the dial is turnedall the way to the left on the broadcast bandjust above .55 (Maximum capacity of thevariable condenser).

Now rotate dialto .55 and resonate trimmer 10 at 550 kc. Re-check the setting at 1,400 and bend plates ofvariable condenser at 950 and other pointswhere necessary to secure ke. reading on dial.

to 3.5, and feed in 3,500 kc. service oscillatorsignal. Resonate trdmmer 13, R.F. trimmer 6and antenna trimmer 3. Rotate dial to .55on broadcast band. HAVE you ever sat in one of the sky -scraping stadiums which now dotthe land and watched a famousfootball team in action-and then,

later in the game, had an opportunity tostand close by the side -lines and see thatteam rush past you, literally shaking theground as It bucked the line of its adver-saries with speed "faster than the eye canfollow?" That is, perhaps, a feeble sug-gestion of the impression one gets frommeeting the newest and youngest amongthose radio manufacturers who hold thecoveted "RCA license." He is one of themost remarkable figures in an industry dis-tinguished for the number of young menwho have attained high places.

Yet, lest the impression be conveyed thatMcMurdo Silver is a superman sent to earthwith some peculiar sort of silver spoon inhis mouth which causes difficulties to vanishbefore his inspired onslaught, it had best beexplained that such by no means appears tobe the case. Those familiar with Silver'sshort but adventurous business life knowthat, if he is a whole football team in him-self, his life has been no continual successionof marches down the field to repeated touch-downs. On the contrary, there have beentimes when the ball was in the enemy'shands, with the line gritting its teeth towithstand the opponents' determined rushes.But, after all, the important thing abouta football game is the final score. And thereis no better way of stating his score thanto say that in 1924 Silver went into theradio parts business with a determinationto attain leadership in that business withinfive years; and that the thing was done infour years instead of five-for 1928 sawSilver -Marshall at the top of the heap!

And-if further evidence is needed -1929finds this same 26 -year old executive the re-cipient of a manufacturer's license from theRadio Corporation of America, GeneralElectric Company, Westinghouse Electric& Manufacturing Company, and American

Telephone & Telegraph Company, to manu-facture radio receivers under the famous"pooled patents" which opened the door tolarge-scale radio production in the marketof the middle twenties. When it is re-membered that these licenses have consist-ently been issued only to large and long-established radio manufacturing corpora-tions-and that a minimum payment of$100,000 per year is required of each licenseeas compensation for the use of these com-bined patents of the largest electrical re-search laboratories in America-it becomesclear. that those in the high councils of elec-trical big business are much of the deliberateopinion that McMurdo Silver is a "goodbet."

And the story of this man who is still amere boy, is doubly interesting; for it caneasily be the story of any "amateur" youngman of today, if only he is willing to followin Silver's footsteps, and work and study tofit himself-not to seize, but to do as Silverdid-to make, his own opportunities.

McMurdo Silver was born on the 15th ofMarch, 1903, in Geneva, New York-almosta St. Patrick's baby. His father was pro-fessor of ancient history at Hobart College.Both of his parents were of American stockfor several centuries back, with Scotch, Eng-lish and French blood behind their Americanancestry. The boy's early youth was un-eventful except, as this narrative may fallin the class of "success stories," it must bestated that young Silver did not run true to"success" form. He was not a leader amongthe boys of the town, he did not play themost devilish of practical jokes, and he wasnot at the head of his class-actually, he was'far from the top, most of the time. Norwas he a book-worm-in fact, up to the ageof nine, nothing unusual seems to have beenapparent in the boy except a rather notice-able seriousness.

light of public attention through the sinkingof the Republic and, just then, of the Ti-tanic. At the same time an account wasalso read of the Mexican Rurales, a troopof mounted police recruited from criminalsby the simple and masterly expedient ofcatching one, putting a rope around his neck,placing him upon a horse all ready to begently stroked with a whip, and asking theindividual so situated if he wished to be-come a Rurale, or if he preferred to dis-mount from his steed posthaste and remainin the unenviable position of hanging'by hisneck to an obliging tree limb, separatedfrom it by several feet of rope, and from theground by several feet more. The answer,unless choked off by the culprit's emotion,or the executioner's desire for the unusualnegative reply by way of a bit of extra ex-citement, was invariably "yes."

Strange as it may seem, these two bits ofinstruction stuck firmly in the young man'smind. The next day the cook, called to theback yard of the family residence by un-earthly yells, beheld a strange sight. Sittingastride a saw -horse was a young Mexicanboy hurriedly conscripted for the part of theconvict. His hands were tightly tied, and avery heavy rope, almost thicker than hispudgy arms, connected his unwilling neckwith the limb of a small tree directly abovehim. He was calling loudly upon -all thesaints known to him in a somewhat unin-telligible imitation of Spanish. Next to himstood one of the "Silver Gang," asking loudlyand repeatedly whether he "joined or cited."The executioner, in anticipation of the reply,held the nozzle of a length of garden hosein his hand. Some distance away, in a con-fiscated wash -boiler, stood the instigator ofthis new game, holding the other end, of thehose in one hand, while in the other wasanother piece of hose which reached back tothe gibbet and terminated in the grimy gripof the assistant executioner. As the victim'spleas were uttered, the executioner shoutedthem into one hose, through which they werepresumably transmitted to the ship at sea,represented by the wash -boiler. From th, .c,through the other hose, the verdict wasshouted in a high falsetto to the assistantexecutioner, who in turn put the all-impor-tant question to the prisoner.

In this way wisdom was assimilated by

the analytical mind of McMurdo; communi- 7cation with ships could only be through rub-ber hose, since . one couldn't shout severalthousand miles. And to use "wireless teleg-raphy" one had to have a reason; which wasopportunely provided by the recalcitrantson of a Mexican villager, who might evenyet be reclaimed to the cause of the law bystrong -rope methods and the marvels ofradio.

THE TREE'S INCLINED

Having had the error of his ways physi-cally impressed on him in no uncertain man-ner, the inquiring streak of Silver's mindcame to the surface. He set out to findout about "wireless," and the reason for hischastisement. This he did for several yearswith no overpowering success. To earnmoney to buy the parts with which to ex-periment, he obtained a job that every olderboy in town had had before him, and givenup after a few days-or few weeks-for thejob required a degree of regularity abhor-rent to a small boy's soul. It was thenewspaper route in the village. Every day,including Sunday, the boy had to get theNew York City papers from the noon train,make up his route, and deliver papers fromone end of town to the other, rain or shine.Fort'unately, Silver's school hours permittedthis and somehow fie held the job not for amonth, but for years. And so the paperroute that had once been a source of emer-gency revenue to small boys of the town,ceased to be a source of annoyance to themethodical villagers who wanted their paperspromptly on the dot, and seldom had gotthem. But let us not give young Silvercredit for too much perseverance. Two fac-tors held him on the job, rain or shine, win-ter or summer. The first was a parentanxious for his daily paper to arrive prompt-ly and regularly, and the second was asimilar determination on the part of the no -longer harassed proprietor of the route,which manifested itself in a much more sub-stantial manner than parental orders.

All the money gained does not seem tohave given him a "wireless" that was everthe talk of the town, but the foundation wasbeing laid; he was reading and studying"wireless" to a point where his schoolstudies suffered badly. Early in 1916 Pro-fessor Silver died, and the young man movedto New York City with his mother. Bythis time he had managed to squeeze out ofgrammar school, from which he never didgraduate, and into high school; and forthree successive years he was the discour-agement of his Instructors, all of whomfinally gave him up as hopeless, and firmlythrew him out of school.

So on a memorable Armistice Day ofNovember 11, 1918, while Wall Street wascovered from top and bottom with paperand ticker tape, and the world was terriblyjubilant at the prospect of peace after thelong repression of the war years, young Sil-ver started to work in earnest to help sup-port his family. And had Professor Silverbeen alive, it is doubtful if he would havebeen greatly grieved at the failure of hisson to acquire an academic education; forthe liberal -minded father had always feltfrom his years of experience that for ayoung man so uninterested in a college train-ing as not to desire it, or to be unable,through lack of interest, to assimilate it, itsloss was no real loss.

But this time the secret of Silver's suc-cess could be seen, but by most parents it

would not have been recognized. He wasa failure at school; yet at the age of thir-teen, in 1916, he had written, and had suc-ceeded in having published in a sportingmagazine of the day, an article of severalthousand words on a subject in which hewas deeply interested-early American fire-arms. This was during wartime, and as"wireless" had been prohibited to amateurs,Silver had thrown his whole interest intostudying his other hobby, antique guns. Hisinterest was so great, and he had spent hiswaking hours in such deep study and de-termined efforts to satisfy his curiosity atpublic libraries, museums, and in gun stores,that he possessed at the age of thirteen amore complete knowledge of early Americanarms than many a veteran collector or'dealer. And this knowledge had enabledhim to earn many hundreds of dollars in theyears of 1916, 1917 and 1918 in buying, sell-ing and trading old arms; for in this fieldhis commercial talent first showed itself.

Interested as he was in firearms, he couldnot enlist, for he was but fifteen years oldwhen the war ended. The ban was liftedfrom radio shortly after Armistice Day, andSilver began to experiment again, with thenew vacuum tubes that had been developedduring the war. Not content to work as aWall Street messenger during the day andplay with wireless at night as most boyswould have been, he added the commercialelement of building, buying and selling thecrude "wireless' parts and sets of the dayin addition to his trading in old arms. Silverwas ambitious, and spent in study his everywaking hour outside of a job that he seldomleft before seven or eight o'clock in theevening.

WORKING INTO RADIO

The story is told that he gave himself fiveyears to become a partner in the old,established brokerage house for which heworked and, upon finding himself advanced

only to the position of quotation -board boyafter a, year and a half, forsook Wall Street.At this point his life work was determinedupon. Up to then "wireless" and antiquearms had, had his almost equal interest. Theoffer of a position as laboratory assistantin the tube laboratories of the WestinghouseLamp Company at Bloomfield, New Jersey,decided his fate and radio definitely claimedhim early in 1920. The work of developingthe tubes that preceded the present Radio-.trons so intrigued Silver that he decided tobecome an engineer-this lad who had failedat every scholastic study. How did the boywho had been disappointed because he couldnot rise to the top over night in WallStreet go about it?

His interest aroused, he set to work,blindly at first, then pointedly. First heasked-"Why can't I have an engineer's jobnow?" And when laughed at he persisteduntil he found out concretely just what hewould have to do to become an engineer.Having then little money for education, hedecided to take night courses in engineeringat Cooper Union. But he was unable topass the entrance examinations; for his onlyeducation was what he had absorbed fromhis parents and dug out of his hobbies forhimself. Unable to take up an engineeringcourse at once, he set out to lay the ground-work that would enable him to enter CooperUnion later. Starting in another nightschool to prepare, he soon passed his ex-aminations at the head of one class, secondin another. Such was the strength of hisinterest when once aroused. In the mean-time, having learned all he could at theWestinghouse Laboratories without knowl-edge of his own, he went to work for aradio and electrical jobber in New York tobroaden his experience. Not greatly inter-ested in his work, he made no startling suc-cess, though promoted twice in eighteenmonths, once to head of his department, thesecond time to a higher department.

In the eventthat one part of the strip goes-it doesnot become necessary to replace the entireunit. Parts lists are providedfor replacement work, of course.

The input circuit includes a band selectorof the inductive -coupling type. Although

the use of type '24 tubes is shown, the vol-ume -control potentiometer, R1, is in thecathode circuit and, consequently, the circuitis readily adaptable to the use of type '35variable -mu tubes; with corresponding re-duction in the amount of cross -modulation.A "local -distance" switch, in the chassis, isthe only other means of control. The tonecontrol is of capacity -resistance type; Cl -R2, connected from grid to grid of the push-pull '45's. The field coil of the dynamicreproducer obtains its current by being con-nected in the negative lead of the powerpack. A jack is provided, for connectionof a phonograph pickup in the cathode cir-cuit of the twin -detectors.

This novel arrangement of a power de-tector circuit is the outstanding point ofinterest about the "Model 90." This twin -detector design, it will be noticed, is obtainedby paralleling two type '27 tubes.

For the guidance of Service Men, the fol-lowing data are furnished concerning thetube (average) operating characteristics:Plate potentials: V1, V2, V4, V5, V6, V7,V8, 225 volts; V3, 85 volts. Cathode poten-tials: VI, V4, 2 volts; V2, 7 volts; V3, 5volts; V5, V6, 25 volts; V7, V8, 28 volts.Screen -grid potentials: V1, 'V2, V4, 85 volts.Voltages corresponding to the colored leadof the reproducer are as follows: red, 230volts; blue, 160; black, 0.0; brown, 225. Allpotentials are thus indicated only on a high -resistance meter.

There are two 8 mf. sections of an elec-trolytic condenser, C2, in this chassis. This,the "Radiette Model 90" receiver, is a prod-uct of Keller -Fuller Mfg. Co., Ltd., LosAngeles, Calif.

tenna trimmer 2. Rotate dial to 3.5 and res-onate trimmer 8 at 8,500 kc. Recheck at 8.5(8.9).

Short -Wave Band No. 3

Turn band indicator to 9 to 21, set dial to20, and feed in 20,000 kc. Resonate oscillatortrimmer 11, R.F. trimmer 4 and antenna trim-mer I. The alignment at 9 is obtained by useof the fixed condensers which should not re-quire change. To insure band sensitivity inthe region of major foreign program reception.turn the dial to 12 and resonate antenna coiltrimmer 1 at 12,000 kc.

Note that since all adjustments are madewith the A.V.C. inactive, extreme care mustbe used to attenuate the input signal lowenough so that there will be no overloading oftube amplifiers while making adjustments.

After these high -frequency adjustments havebeen made, the service oscillator setting shouldbe advanced 930 kc. and the output signalstrength considerably increased; non -receptionof the image signal indicates incorrect setoscillator adjustment. For example: a serviceoscillator signal of 20,930 Ice. should be per-ceptible at 20 on the dial after alignment to20,000 kc.

Beat Oscillator Adjustments

Turn the main dial to receive a service oscil-lator signal of 4,800 kc., and make sure thatthe band on the "beat oscillator" (FrequencyMeter V17) falls on 1.5 when the 2 gang con-denser is at full capacity.

Turn Osc. Sw. to the right ("Mod."), andfrequency dial to 4. Resonate the trimmer onthe 2 gang condenser to main dial setting.Turn band indicator switch to short-waveband No. 1 (1.5 to 3.5 ), set main dial towhere 1.500 kc. comes in, turn frequency dialto 1.5, and then resonate trimmer 15.

A.V.C. Adjustment

Connect one side of a high -resistance volt-meter to A.V.C. potentiometer terminal whichconnects to the "high" side of the 0.2-meg. re-sistor and to the 0.1-mf. fixed condenser, andthe other (positive) to chassis ground.

Adjust the receiver for reception of a signalintensity of 3,000 to 4,000 micro -volts, andvary for maximum voltmeter reading, in agiven locality, the adjustment in the top, nextto the neon adjustment, of the coil can assemblyin the upper right-hand corner (facing rearof tuner).

In certain localities close to a broadcaststation it may be necessary to readjust theA.V.C. (Blotted shaft) control. Exactly res-

onate the receiver. Then, if the station's sig-nals sound "fringy" or rough, turn the controlto the right only sufficiently far to correct thiscondition.

Neon Tuning Indicator and Q.A.V.C.

Facing the back of the tuner chassis, ex-tending through one of the tall shielded as-semblies in the upper right-hand corner, willbe found a small, black knurled knob used toadjust the neon resonance indicator. It isadvantageous to be able to set this adjustmentif excessive fading is experienced due tolocality. Adjust the receiver dial to a powerfulstation during the time of day in which it isreceived strongest. Then turn the neon adjust-ment until the light just fills the opening inarrow dial. Readjust the tuning dial of thereceiver; should the light become more bril-liant, leave the dial at the point of highestbrilliancy and again readjust the neon indicatoruntil it just fills the arrow opening. (This ad-justment need be made only when the set isinstalled.)
