President’s and Regents’ Retiree Association Published for Retirees of the Office of the President and Office of e Regents, University of California Spring 2017 Welcome to our “Spring” newsletter and congratula- tions to new retirees. Yep, I realize if we meet the schedule we’ve laid out that you’ll be receiving this newsletter before the start of Spring. The last newsletter noted that the Council of UC Retiree Associations (CUCRA) was conducting a survey of all UC retirees. The results of that survey are not yet distributed but I do know the percent- age of PARRA retirees who participated was one of the highest across the State. I will be sure to share the results as soon as they are available. In the meantime, not to overwhelm you with surveys, but PARRA is also conducting a survey. The PARRA survey is complementary to the CUCRA survey, so you won’t be asked to respond to the same questions as in the CUCRA survey. I encourage your participation in what I believe may be only the second PARRA survey since its inception. When you take the survey you will see that the PARRA Executive Committee is trying to identify your interests, particularly in regard to events other than the luncheons we might consider offering. The survey is brief so it should not take much time to complete. The survey, and instructions for completing it online, are included in this newsletter. Speaking of luncheons, our next luncheon will be Tuesday, April 11, as noted in the accompanying article. If you’ve heard terms such as precision medi- cine or of the use of genomics for treating disease and wanted to know more, this talk by Dr. Joseph DeRisi of UCSF will be of particular interest. Besides Dr. DeRisi, I am pleased to announce that Rachael Nava, UC’s Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President since February 2015, plans to attend the luncheon and will make a few brief remarks. I hope many of you will have an opportunity to meet Rachael during the social time before the meeting. The Executive Committee is also piloting as a trial an offer of transportation for retirees who want to attend the luncheon but for whom transportation to H’s Lordships is difficult. With Executive Committee members living in Alameda, Contra Costa and Marin Counties, we anticipate one of us could provide a ride for such retirees living in major portions of those counties. So, if you are interested in attending the luncheon, live in one of these counties and need transportation, let me know and I’ll see if I or one of our Committee members might be able to provide you with a ride. You can contact me — preferably via e-mail at [email protected] — or by phone at 510 206-9328. Depending on the interest in this offering and our ability to satisfy requests, this offering may be continued in the future. I want to remind readers who wish to make a voluntary contribution to PARRA that you may do so by sending a check made out to PARRA in care of Linda Glasscock, 20 Laurelwood Drive, Novato, CA 94949. Our requested donation is $10 per year. Lastly, I look forward to seeing many of you at our upcoming luncheon. Please join us at the PARRA Spring luncheon at Hs. Lordship’s Restau- rant in Berkeley. The speaker will be UCSF Professor Joseph DeRisi. Dr. DeRisi will explore the applica- tion of genomics, the study of the complete set of DNA within a cell, to biomedical research, using a series of case examples from his own lab to illustrate both the promise and pitfalls of precision medicine. Professor DeRisi currently serves as Chair of the UCSF Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics and as Co-President of the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub. A recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship in 2004, he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2015 and to the National Academy of Sciences in 2016. Election of ExecutiveCommittee Members

If you still receive the paper version of PARRA Network News, you are now in the minority; more members get the newsletter by e-mail than via the U.S. Postal Service.Receiving the newsletter via e-mail has the obvious benefit of cost savings (printing, labor, postage) and also means you get more timely information on events and programs from PARRA and the Retirement Center at UC Berkeley. To switch from paper to electronic distribution, send an e-mail to [email protected] and ask to be added to the e-mail list. We hope you won’t, but if you wish to opt out of all PARRA communications, you can let us know at the same e-mail address.

Push for Paperless It's about time! The last time the PARRA Executive Committee conducted a survey of the membership was 2007. Now, as then, the survey focuses on participatory activities, and also invites your comments on what other work you would like us to do. Please help us shape PARRA to meet your needs. The survey is brief. If you complete it online, it can be submitted anonymously; no postage necessary! For members with Web access, go to https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/Z8CSSNB. The survey will stay up until April 30.For those who wish to respond on paper, the survey is included as an insert to this newsletter.Completed surveys can be mailed, no later than April 30, to the same address as your lunch RSVPs: PARRA c/o Nancy Nakayama, 8724 Don Carol Drive, El Cerrito CA 94530.Results will be shared with members in the Fall PARRA Network News, or sooner. If you have any questions or comments about the survey, please contact Connie Williams at [email protected] you for your help with this important project.

PARRA Member Survey

Our current PARRA bylaws provide for the election of the following seven officers: President, Vice President/President-Elect, Secretary, Treasurer, Membership Coordinator, Information Coordinator, and Program Coordinator. In recent years, however, only the positions of President, Vice President/President-Elect, Secretary, and Treasurer have been elected directly by the membership. The Executive Committee considered this over the course of several meetings and determined that it would be best to conform the bylaws to current practice with an amendment that would provide that only the positions of President, Vice President/President-Elect, Secretary and Treasurer be elected and that the positions of Membership Coordinator, Information Coordinator, and Program Coordinator be appointed by the President. The vote on the amendment will take place during the business meeting portion of the April luncheon. For the proposed amended bylaws, go to http://retirement.berkeley.edu/PARRA.

The Executive Committee, at its January 2017 meeting, adopted a motion nominating Jim Dolgonas, Mary MacDonald, and Erica Nietfeld to new three-year terms beginning July 1, 2017. The election will take place during the business meeting portion of the April luncheon.

Hs Lordships, 199 Seawall Dr., Berkeley

Professor Joseph DeRisi onNew Avenues in Biomedical Research

UCSF Professor Joseph DeRisi will explore the application of genomics, the study of the complete set of DNA within a cell, to biomedical research, using a series of case examples from his own lab to illustrate both the promise and pitfalls of precision medicine.

Dr. DeRisi is currently the Chair of the UCSF Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics and Co-President of the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub. A 2004 MacArthur Fellowship recipient, he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2015 and to the National Academy of Sciences in 2016.

No-host bar opens at 11:15 a.m.; buffet lunch, which includes vegetarian selections, begins at noon.

A map and directions to Hs Lordships are included on the reverse, but you probably won’t need them. Just go to the end of University Avenue (toward the Bay) and at the Bay, turn left and proceed to the end. Plenty of free parking. Please be sure your car is locked and that no valuables are visible. We haven’t had any reports of problems from our members, but it’s a good idea to take this simple precaution.

Questions? Contact Nancy Nakayama at (510) 524-2358.
