4 THE FOREST NEWS August 2017
We have received a number of complaints over
the last year about properties that have become a
nuisance. While we do what we can under our deed
restrictions, unfortunately some residents refuse to
comply. When this occurs, we find that it is very
helpful to contact Harris County Public Health and
Environmental Services (HCPHES) at 713-274-6300. HCPHES investigates complaints that may
violate the Texas Neighborhood Nuisance Abatement
Act, a law intended to eliminate public nuisances
in unincorporated areas of Texas. Following an
investigation that results in a nuisance notification,
a property owner or occupant has thirty days to
eliminate the nuisance. Failure to comply can result
in civil action or criminal prosecution. We ask that
homeowners notify both the HOA and the County.
The HOA follows up with the County regarding
complaints, however those effected by the problem
need to be involved as well. We get a much better
rate of response working together.
What constitutes a “public nuisance?”
Public nuisances are grouped into six (6) categories:
1. Keeping, storing or accumulating refuse on
premises in a neighborhood unless the refuse is
entirely contained in an enclosed receptacle.
2. Keeping, storing, or accumulating rubbish or any
unused, discarded or abandoned object, including
newspapers, vehicles, tires and cans on premises
in a neighborhood for ten days or more, unless
the rubbish or object is completely enclosed within
a building or is not visible from a public street.
3. Maintaining premises in a manner that creates
an unsanitary condition likely to attract or
harbor mosquitoes, rodents, vermin or disease-
carrying pests.
4. Allowing weeds to grow on premises in a
neighborhood if such weeds are located
within 300 feet of another residence or
commercial establishment.
5. Maintaining a building in a manner that is
structurally unsafe or constitutes a hazard to
safety, health or public welfare because of
inadequate maintenance, unsanitary condition,
dilapidation, obsolescence, fire hazard, disaster,
or abandonment.
6. Maintaining a swimming pool or unoccupied
property in a neighborhood that is not protected
with a fence that is at least four feet high and
that has a latched gate that cannot be opened by
a child, or protected by a cover over the entire
swimming pool that cannot be removed by a child.
If you are currently dealing with any of these
problems, please contact HCPHES at 713-274-6300. To file a complaint, you will need to provide
the address for the offending property.

THE FOREST NEWS August 2017 5
The 4th of July celebration and parade in
Greenwood Forest is always a great experience with
the participation of decorated bikes, floats, fire
trucks, and a parade of vehicles. The theme of the
Women’s Club float was “Let Freedom Ring” with
the ladies ringing cow bells, sleigh bells, dinner bells,
and wind chimes. The bell ringers were Ann Stone,
Kay Wilson, and Trudi Trainor. Sue Ann Lurcott
and Lavern Bowden (dressed as Uncle Sam) rang
bells and tossed candy to the crowd. Many thanks to
those who decorated the float: Mary and Ron Jacoby,
Shirley and Tony Darrow, Trudi Trainor, Pat Ashton,
Doris Johnson, Brenda Roberson, Kathy Krimsky,
Betty Mills, and Roger Bensman.
With the coming of fall just around the corner, the
ladies of the Women’s Club have been busy planning
for our 2017-18 meetings and programs. President
Doris Johnson, Vice President Sue Ann Lurcott, and
Program Chair, Diane Webb, have scheduled activi-
ties and programs you will not want to miss.
Many of you ladies living in Greenwood might have
wanted to join the Women’s Club in the past but
did not for some reason. We invite you to join us at
the Clubhouse the 2nd Thursday of each month at
9:30 am for refreshments. The meeting will start at 10 am.
There are also benefits for becoming a member
as you will be eligible to join our various groups:
Antique Club, Bridge, Quilting, and Book Club.
AND Wineaux Night (a quarterly wine and hors
d’oeuvres social) which also includes spouses.
Wineaux Night started over ten years ago when
Wilma Baker Colbert suggested that would be a great
way for our spouses (or significant others) to meet. It
has been a huge hit from the very beginning.
If you would like to participate in any of the above
activities, please complete the form found in this
Newsletter, along with your $20 check payable to
GFWC, and mail to Carol VanderVoort, Membership,
5203 Pebble Springs, Houston, TX 77066.
See you on Thursday, September 14th!

6 THE FOREST NEWS August 2017
Home & Garden Club The fourth of July started with the annual parade
down Champion Forest Drive. Benette Schreiber and
Joyce Vinyard, decked out as beautiful butterflies,
handed out plants to residents along the parade route.
Patty Natole provided us with a place to decorate and
celebrate the successful completion of another July 4th
project. As always, we have to extend a big “THANK
YOU” to the Garden Club members and their spouses
for helping out with the decorating July 3rd. We
couldn’t do it without your help, guys! It was great
to see so many different groups join the parade, boy
scouts, bikers, dogs, the Red Hat ladies, Romeos, etc.
Our local fire department, EMS, ATF, and constables
were also part of the activity. The kids love getting
hosed down when they reach the clubhouse. A fun day
for everyone. Thanks, Benette!
Congratulations to the recipients of the Yard of the
Month, Charles & Randy Vento. Their home is at
12003 Soft Pines. Thank you for adding to the beauty
of Greenwood Forest!
Our next meeting will be September 28th at the
clubhouse. Social time begins at 9:30 am, the meeting
begins at 10 am. You will find a membership applica-
tion in this issue of the Greenwood Forest Newsletter.
Please fill out the form, even if you are a past member.
It makes everything so much easier for the membership
committee. Thanks, ladies! You can drop the form off to
Wilma Colbert, or bring it to the September meeting.
If you aren’t a Home & Garden Club member, we
hope you will consider joining us. We have a lot of fun
and it’s a great way to meet your neighbors!
Enjoy the summer!

HOUSTON BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU AREA SCAMSFollowing are scams that have been proven to be successful year after year. They are successful because scammers are professionals who have tried and true techniques to swindle their victims for big bucks. They do things like build relationships and connections and play on a targeted victim’s emotions to get them to make hasty decisions. They often go through extensive measures to make themselves
appear credible. Be aware of the following and don’t become a victim.
Safety & Security
Medical Alert ScamThis is another scam that preys on older folks. You get
a call or a visit from a company claiming a concerned
family member ordered a medical alert device for you in
case you have an emergency. They take your credit card
or banking information but you never receive anything.
Tech Support ScamYou get a call or a pop-up on your computer claim-
ing to be from Microsoft (or Norton, or Apple) about
a problem on your computer. They say if you give
“tech support” access to your hard drive, they can fix
it. Instead, they install malware on your computer and
start stealing your personal information.
And the TOP Scam of the Year – because
it’s just so terrifying is:
Arrest ScamYou receive an ominous phone call from someone
claiming to be a police officer or government agent
(often the IRS). They are coming to arrest you for over-
due taxes or for skipping out on jury duty, but you can
avoid the arrest by sending them money via a prepaid
debit card or wire transfer. Another variation on this
is that you’ll be arrested for an overdue payday loan.
Whatever the “violation,” it’s scary to be threatened
with arrest, and many people pay out of fear.
CRIME WATCHThe next Crime Watch meeting
will be on Wednesday, August
9th at 7 pm in the Clubhouse.
Meetings are held the 2nd
Wednesday of each month.
Robocall ScamThe notorious “Rachel from Cardholder Services”
made a resurgence in 2016. This scam claims to be
able to lower your credit card interest rates and takes
personal information – including your credit card num-
ber – and then charges fees to your card. Robocalls will
always give you the option to be removed from their
call list by pressing a certain number. Hang up and do not press anything! This will on ly confirm that there
is a live person on the other end of the phone and they
will keep calling back.
Government Call ScamScammers will call claiming to be a representative from
some government agency (the IRS, Medicare, etc.).
They will then either inform you that you owe their
agency money and request immediate payment or they
will need you to verify some sensitive information over
the phone that they will then use to do further damage.
Emergency ScamThis one is sometimes called the “grandparent scam”
because it often preys on older consumers. You get a
call or email from your grandchild or other relative who
was injured, robbed or arrested while traveling overseas
and needs money ASAP. Do not send money!
Can You Hear Me ScamYou get a call from someone who immediately asks
“Can you hear me?” Their goal is to get you to answer
“Yes.” These phone calls are recorded and then
edited to make it sound like you have authorized a
major purchase. “Working In Your Neighborhood”• Residential• Deep Cleaning• Regular Cleaning• Free Estimates

Exercising Avoid midday sun by exercising in the morning or
evening when it is likely to be cooler outdoors.
Lightweight, loose fitting clothing promotes sweat
evaporation and cooling by letting more air pass
over your body. Avoid dark colors which can
absorb heat.
Carry water with you and drink continuously,
even if you don’t feel thirsty.
Sun Exposure Stay in the shade whenever possible and limit sun
exposure during peak intensity hours – between
10:00 am and 4:00 pm.
On both sunny and cloudy days use a sunscreen
with an SPF of 15 or greater.
Reapply sunscreen every two hours or after
swimming or sweating.

Keep Children Safe In, On, & Around the Water
Maintain constant supervision. Watch children
around any water environment (pool, stream, lake,
tub, toilet, bucket of water), no matter what skills
your child has acquired and no matter how shallow
the water. For younger children, practice “Reach
Supervision” by staying within an arm’s length reach.
Don’t rely on substitutes. The use of flotation
devices and inflatable toys cannot replace paren-
tal supervision. Such devices could suddenly shift
position, lose air, or slip out from underneath,
leaving the child in a dangerous situation.
Enroll children in a water safety course or swim
lessons. Your decision to provide your child with
an early aquatic experience is a gift that will have
infinite rewards. These courses encourage safe
practices. You can also purchase a Water Safety
Handbook at the Red Cross Store.
Parents should take a CPR course. Knowing
these skills can be important around the water
and you will expand your capabilities in providing
care for your child. You can contact your local
Red Cross to enroll in a CPR course.
