It is an honor for us, that today we have been bestowed with the grace of the Divine

Manifestation,torevivewhatwasoncethestrongestcalloffreedomandconscienceamongstthe

faithfulinlightoftheteachingsofBaha’u’llahandAbdulBaha’.

Thismagazine is not amere publication and its purpose is not entertainment. Rather this

Magazinewasonceandwillonceagainbeasourceofinspirationforthetrulyfaithfulwhoare

steadfastintheirfaithinfaceoftheonslaughtoftheenemieswhochoosetobelittletheDivine

wordsandrendermeaninglessthedivineteachingsfortheirmaterialgood.

WhyisDrC.AMitchellimportantfortheBaha’iFaith?

DrCharlesAinsworthMitchell(20November1867–5January1948)wasaBritishchemistandforensic scientist who made a special study of the microscopic and chemical study ofhandwriting.Hewas a Fellowof theRoyal Institute of Chemistry and theRoyal Society ofChemistry,andmemberoftheSocietyofPublicAnalysts.HewaseditorofTheAnalystfor25years,presidentoftheMedico-LegalSociety(1935–1937),andvicepresidentoftheSocietyofChemistry(1937–1940).

thDrMitchellwasbornon20 November1867inThetford,England,thethirdsonofDr.T.H.Mitchell.HewaseducatedatKingWilliam'sCollege,andExeterCollege,Oxford,graduatingin1889.In1899hemarriedEdithBoyleKeely.


Asachemistandascientist,Mitchell'sworkcoveredawiderangeoftopics.HebecameafellowoftheRoyalInstituteofChemistryin1897andoftheRoyalChemicalSocietyin1916.In1907headvocated using a pinhole camera to photograph the sun in an article in Knowledge andScientificNews,amethodwhichhenoteswasknownasearlyas1615butseemedtohavebeenforgotten.In1911,headvocatedtheswitchfromleadtocopperpipesfordrinkingwater.Hisreasoningwasthatcopperwouldbetterbeabletoalertthedrinkertoanexcessofpoisonoussulphatesinthewater.In1920,hebecameeditorofTheAnalyst,ajournaloftheRoyalSocietyofChemistry,andinlessthan25yearsofhiseditorshipthejournalexpandedinscopeandsawanincreaseinreputation.

In1911hewasheadoftheinspectionbureauoftheScotlandYard.Hefrequentlyservedasanexpertwitness.In1915,hegavetestimonyabouttheinvisibleinkusedinthecaseofGermanspy,AntonKuepferle.

In1925heanalyseddocumentsandsealsofMary,QueenofScotsandclaimedtoshowthatMarywasinnocentofconspiracytoassassinateQueenElizabethIofEngland.HesaidthatWilliamMaitland,Mary'ssecretary,forgedMary'shandinthedocumentswhichledtoMary'sexecution.In1929,hewasanadvocateoftheuseoffingerprintstodetermineidentity,amethodwhichhetracedtoSirWilliamHerschellin1853,whosawthemethodusedintodocumentanindividual'sidentityinIndia,wherehewasacommissioner.Heshowedthatmonkeysmaybeidentifiedbyfingerprintsandthatthesamecouldbedonewiththemarkingsonacow'snose.HewashiredbytheLadyRuthWhitetoanalyzetheWillandTestamentofAbdulBaha.WhiteopposedpartsoftheWillthatsuggestedtheestablishmentofahierarchyintheBahá'íFaith.HisreportconcludedinagreementwithLadyRuthWhitesallegations,thatthedocumentwasaforgery.TheLadyRuthWhiteplacedacopyofDrMitchell'ssignedreportofthehandwritinganalysisdonebythelatterwiththeU.S.LibraryofCongressintheyear1930.

DrMitchell'sotherworksinclude:

-Inks:theircompositionandmanufacture(1904)-ScienceandtheCriminal(1911)-EdibleOils&Fats(1918)-DifferentiationofinksinwritingAnalyst(1908)-PencilMarkingsintheBodleianLibrary(1922)

TheWillandTestamentofAbdu'lBahaisthe"CentreoftheCovenant"andafundamentalpartoftheBaha'ifaith.LadyRuthWhitewasalwaysawareofShoghiEffendi'slicentiousnatureandbeinga kleptomaniac.AlthoughtheLadyRuthWhitewasveryclosetotheMaster,HeneverevenoncementionedaboutShoghiEffendiashissuccessor.However,twoyearsafterAbdu'lBaha'sdeath,HisWillandTestamentwasreleasedforpublicviewingwhichsurprisinglyhadShoghimentionedasthesuccessorandtheguardianofthefaith.
