Crime Prevention TipLOCK, TAKE, HIDE

One of the easiest ways to prevent becoming a crime victim is to lock your car doors. Leaving cars unlocked in your driveway allows easy access to see what can be stolen. Please keep the crime tip of LOCK, TAKE, HIDE in mind. Lock, Take, and Hide is an easy 3-step plan that drastically reduces your chances of becoming a victim:

1. Lock your car doors.

2. Take your keys and valuables with you. (This includes cell phones, wallets/purses, GPS units, computers, weapons, and jewelry).

3. Hide those valuables so they aren’t in plain sight.

Grass Giving Up?Break New Ground!

By Cleveland Powell, SAWS GardenStyle San Antonio

Has your lawn gone crispy and sparse, and in desperate cry for help? That sounds like a job for the WaterSaver Landscape Coupon!

Turfgrass is the default filler in most San Antonio landscapes, which were traditionally set up to have a small flower bed by the door and an expansive lawn occupying the remaining space. But that’s not necessarily the best idea going forward.

In fact, your lawn will let you know that it is not well suited to this idea — and that it’s better off being replaced with drought-hardy options using our WaterSaver Landscape Coupon.

One sure sign of a struggling lawn is St. Augustine grass with “crispy edges” where the sun bakes or full-sun Bermuda grass with edges or patches struggling to survive in thinner soil. These are dead giveaways that you’re attempting to grow grass in sub-optimal conditions. Luckily there are bullet-proof plants that are much better suited to these locations like damianita and blackfoot daisy. Both can take the heat and look great doing it.

Also common are suddenly shady spots where trees have matured. Before you go trimming your trees to let more light through, know that there are many plants that would thrive in shady locations. Creating a landscape bed under a mature tree prevents soil loss. That means healthier trees with fewer exposed roots. Plants like scarlet sage or Turk’s cap love the shade and have the added bonus of attracting hummingbirds. I’d like to see thinning turf do that!

No matter what your issue is with growing grass, don’t be held back by the idea that it needs to stay that way. When grass thins or browns, it’s telling you it’s not happy. And that’s the perfect opportunity to make the switch to less high-maintenance, drought-hardy plants!

Check out our coupon-eligible plant list, which you can filter by size, sunlight requirements, and more. Then envision the possibilities for a new, more appealing and drought tolerant landscape.

Stuck inside? Fun enrichment activities for you and your pet

It’s no secret that pets provide love, loyalty and affection. This is even more apparent now that you’re spending more time at home with them. You may be tempted to spend your time snuggling with your furry friend, but there are a lot of fun new things you can do to engage your pet mentally and physically while you are at home together. Now is a great time to integrate enrichment activities that will keep both of you healthy, happy and engaged.

Making it new: It is important to expand your pet’s world by providing opportunities for exploration. Try creating temporary indoor spaces to explore with boxes and paper bags or closing off a bedroom for a week to give your pet a space to rediscover. Hide some treats or favorite toys in the room before reopening it. Remember to keep toys in rotation to help create newness.

Treat time: While at home all day, it can become difficult to track when your pet gets a snack, so try adding a treat time to your schedule. Keep in mind, pets should get no more than 10% of their daily calories from treats. If you have kids, let them earn the reward of treating the pet that day by cleaning their room or finishing homework early.

One-on-one time: Having everyone constantly at home together can be stressful for pets. Provide opportunities for pets to have time on their own in addition to one-on-one time with family members. Spending 15 minutes together in a quiet space with no distractions can allow you to focus on engaging and bonding with your pet.

Exercise: When stuck inside, it’s important to find indoor activities to help pets burn energy. Try tug toys, laser pointer play, or playing tag or hide and seek. If you’re spending more time watching TV, consider keeping a drawer or basket close by with some of your pet’s favorite toys, feather wands, tug-toys, balls, lasers, cat dancers, mechanical toys and stuffed animals. These toys allow you to interact with your pet from the comfort of the couch.

Before you try to get rid of any flying yellow and black creatures, make sure you’re not dealing with honeybees. Bees are incredibly beneficial to your garden and the environment in general. As a rule, bees won’t nest very close to your home and they are not aggressive unless they feel extremely threatened. Once you’re sure it’s wasps you’re dealing with, try these all-natural ideas.

Don’t Draw Them InLike many pests, wasps are attracted to food. They especially like foods that are high in sugar and meat products (including dry pet food). If you have a wasp problem, make sure that food isn’t left out and that your trash cans are sealed tight. If you have any hummingbird feeders, you’ll likely want to move them away from the house – as wasps will compete with the birds for the sugary nectar.

In addition, try not to look or smell too much like a flower or they’ll come straight to you. Avoid wearing yellow or white clothing or too much perfume in areas with a wasp problem.

Put up a Fake NestWasps are very territorial creatures, and they won’t build a nest if they think there is another colony already living nearby. In fact, they’ll likely leave if they think someone else has moved into their neighborhood. You can find a fake wasp nest at several online retailers or you can make it yourself.

To make one all you need is a paper grocery bag and some good twine. Simply crumple up the bag and hang it up near enough to the existing nest that the wasps will notice it.

Keep them out of the house for only 1¢Because of their specially designed eyes, most flying bugs (including flies, mosquitoes and wasps) will stay away from your doorway if you hang up a sandwich bag filled with water and a penny. Some people claim that this looks like a dangerous spider web to the bugs, some say that the reflection off the water is too bright for their eyes. Whichever is true, this simple trick always works.

Time your Attack AppropriatelyIf you’re going after the nest using any method, don’t do it in the middle of a summer day. Wasps are much more active – and aggressive – when it’s warm outside. It’s always safest to go after them at night time. Even so, make sure you wear protective clothing and stand as far back from the nest as possible.

In the coldest months of the year, wasps die off all together. This is the perfect time to remove old nests and hang up a fake one so they won’t come back in the spring.

Spray Nests with a Non-Toxic Wasp KillerPesticides, even the so-called ‘organic’ ones, can be very dangerous for your plants, pets and children. The good news is, you don’t need poison to kill all the wasps invading your space.

How To Get Rid of Wasps NaturallySource: www.naturallivingideas.com

Attach a hose-end sprayer to your garden hose and fill it with dish soap and water. Make sure you wear protective clothing and stand a good distance back from the nest, in case they decide to get aggressive. Let the hose run for a bit to get the suds going, then completely douse the nest in soapy water. The soap will attach to their wings and weigh them down; they’ll eventually suffocate and die off. The ones that survive will leave and build a new nest elsewhere.

Block-off Underground NestsIf your wasps have an underground nest instead of a hanging one, you can kill off the colony by blocking their access to the nest. Figure out where all the entrances and exits are to the nest, sneak in at night and cover them up with a large bowl (or something similar). Make sure you work the bowl into the ground well enough that it forms a seal. Leave the bowl there for at least a few weeks.

If you want to go a step further, pour soapy water down one of the entrances before covering it with the bowl. This will kill all the wasps inside the nest and the ones who weren’t home will relocate somewhere less dangerous.

BBB Scam Alert:Watch out for fake emails, text messages offering money from a fake COVID-19 fundBy Better Business Bureau. July 6, 2020.

Many people are still waiting for their stimulus check and in some states, still navigating the unemployment system as they continue to look for work. To compound the situation, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is warning of the latest phishing scheme where con artists are pretending to be government officials offering grant money from a fund that doesn’t even exist.

Even in the midst of a pandemic, fraudsters aren’t slowing down and, because of COVID-19, many household budgets are stretched thin and cash flow is low. Scammers see this as an opportunity to prey on consumer’s emotions, making it easier to trick them into sharing personal or financial information.

How the Scam WorksRecently, people are stepping forward reporting to BBB’s ScamTracker they’ve received an email, message through Instagram, or a text message from a friend stating they’ll get money from a COVID-19 “Global Empowerment Fund” or other similiarly named fund. All the recipient is required to do is respond to the message with banking account information and the funds will be transferred to it. The messaging sounds legitimate because it claims to come from the Federal Trade Commission or another government agent. However, the FTC warns there is no money and there is no fund of such kind. In fact, the FTC will not contact people by phone, email, tex message, or social media to ask for financial information,

including Social Security numbers from anyone. These are common phishing tactics to get these pieces of information. Do not respond to these messages and encourage friends or relatives to do the same. Instead, report it to the real FTC at ftc.gov/complaint.

Tips to Spot and Avoid a Phishing Scam• Be aware of phone fraud. Scammers claim to be calling in an

official capacity as a government agent and may either sound friendly and courteous; or aggressive and threatening. The caller ID may match the agency they’re claiming to represent, but this can be easily spoofed. Never feel pressured to act. When in doubt, hang up the phone and call the official source to verify unexpected or unusual claims.

• Generally, government agencies will send a letter. If the government needs to reach you, they will send you official documentation in the mail.

• Unknown? Leave it alone. Never confirm or give out personal information to unsolicited phone calls, text messages, social media messages, or phone calls. Government agencies DON’T make unsolicited calls.

• Personal information is just that – personal! Do not give out banking and credit card information, birthdate, Social Security or Insurance number, or any other personal, sensitive information to someone that says they are with a government agency. Personal information is like money - protect it from scammers looking to steal your identity or your benefits.

• Scammers prefer unusual and untraceable methods of payment. The government will never ask for wire transfers or to send them a gift card or pre-paid debit card.
