A Pietermaritzburg man is said to have suffered a massive heart attack and died while exercis-ing at Virgin Active in Victoria Road last week. The man, only known to Public Eye as Mohamed was training with his wife at the time of the incident.

As far as we know he suffered a fatal heart attack. The Virgin Active team and called-in emergency services made every effort to assist, and all necessary procedures were followed correctly, said Head of Stra-tegic Communications for Virgin Active SA, Les Aupiais.

Aupiais said the family was still deeply shocked and would be grateful for privacy at this time.

As you can imagine, a sudden death from illness is very traumatic for a family, she said.

Pietermaritzburg Airport is back in the black according to provin-cial fi nance MEC Ina Cronje who delivered her R89 billion austerity provincial budget at the KZN Legislature yesterday (Tuesday). Cronje said the growth in passenger numbers vindicated governments decision to inject funding into regional airports.

The airport has seen a signifi cant growth in passenger numbers due to the airport upgrade, with an unprecedented 102 000 passengers (up from 77 832 in 2006) having used the airport in the last year, said Cronje. She said the airports turnover of R5.5 million now covered its operating expenditure which enabled it to break even, reversing the loss-making trend of previous years.

Provincial Treasury is anticipating the airport generating a profi t of R305 000

this fi nancial year.Cronjes budget, as anticipated,

remained framed within the context of government tightening its belt. Auster-ity measures announced by the minister include

# an immediate moratorium on the fi ll-ing of non-critical posts except for posts such as HODs, CFOs, clinical staff and essential administrative staff;

# a review of all organograms to be undertaken with the view of eliminat-ing some non-essential posts perma-nently;

# conducting a head count on staff to eliminate ghost employees;

Cronje called on Members of the Provincial Legislature, MECs and civil servants to do the best with limited resources.

We need discipline and courage to spend on budget, obtain clean audits, eliminate unnecessary costs and wastage, get value for money: doing more with less, deal with corruption and deliberate wrong-doing, and eliminating unauthor-ised and irregular expenditure, said the MEC

The budget has been widely welcomed by all parties in the KZN legislature with all of them stressing the need for civil servants to follow the cost cutting measures as outlined by the MEC.

Israeli Apartheid Week (IAW) aims to raise aware-ness of Israels apartheid policies toward the indigenous Palestinians and serves to garner support for the non-violent Boy-cott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) against Israel campaign (which seeks to bring an end to Israel's apartheid policies and vio-lations of international law).

In 1963 Hendrik Verwoerd, the architect of apartheid, said: Israel, like South Africa, is an apartheid state. Since then there have been several South Africans who have compared apartheid South Africa to current-day Israel, including: Ahmed Kathrada, Denis Goldberg, Kader Asmal, Blade Nzimande, Zwelinzima Vavi and Winnie Mandela.

In this regard on Friday 15 March at 18h00 the documentary Jerusalem the east side story will be screened at the University of KwaZulu Natal (UKZN), room 107, New Arts Building.

Israeli Apartheid Week

Editors note: There was con-troversy in Durban this week over the use of the word apartheid in the Israel Apartheid Week (IAW) campaign by the IAW South Africa Team. This was after an IAW mural was painted by well-known graffi ti artist, Iain Ewok Robin-

son, at the Durban North Beach Skate Board Park. A DA Durban Councillor, Avrille Marcia Coen, argued that the usage of the term apartheid in relation to Israel constituted hate speech.

I am very angry at the up keep of the so called Stork Road park. I am a resident on Bombay Road and have always complained about the snakes entering my premises. Today I entered my yard and on opening my door I was taken by surprise with a huge lizard-like creature. I have two children that love to play

outside. I am on the boundary of the so called park. Every time we complain that the grass should be cut we get this answer "there's no funds or theres no petrol".

We are so afraid of even leav-ing our houses in the night because for the past year we have not had working street lights.

Ramlingum Road res-idents have been totally neglected by the municipality.

We have no working street lights and the grass has been overgrown for months. It is not the duty of the residents to com-plain or phone to ask for the grass to be cut or street lights to be replaced. We pay for these services. We are not asking for

favours but for the municipal-ity to be fair and do its job.

Having no street lights and uncut grass resembling bush is totally unsafe for the kids in the area and the residents that have to deal with unfa-miliar job seekers and beg-gars on a daily basis.

Disappointed Residents

For the past 30 days I have been observing the movements at the Civic Centre Hall where the SASSA re-registration is in progress. The grant benefi ciaries cue up outside the gates at 4.30am every morning to gain entry at 7.30am.

The crowd comes from areas such as Haniville, Copesville, Eastwood, Cinderella Park, Orient Heights and Allandale. While interacting with them I was told that most of them come walking from these areas just to re-register for the SASSA cards.

Firstly I must commend the young respectable lady Nokubanga who single-

handedly commences her work at 8am and works until 4pm to issue benefi ciary enrol-ment authorization forms as well as the con-fi rmation of fi nancial status forms, without which the SASSA cards will not be issued.

I must emphasize and compliment the Democratic Alliance (DA) councilors Nithia Govender and Ruksana Ahmed for their dedication in discharging a sterling perform-ance in issuing proof of residence forms to the hundreds of recipients daily without which the SASSA cards will not be issued.

Councilor Ruksana Ahmed tirelessly con-trols the sometimes impatient and unruly crowd. Contrary to the criticism sometimes

directed against councilor Ahmed I have personally observed that she goes the extra mile in ensuring that all the senior citizen plus the wheel chair citizens and the disa-bled are attended to fi rst. It is very easy to cast baseless aspersions. My advice to you is to come to the Civic Centre Hall and observe for yourself.

I must also commend the SASSA offi -cials Jay Pillay, Lourette, Mdu, Dlamini and the rest for their sterling job in discharging their duties effi ciently.

of Finance Nhlanhla Musa Nene highlighted the key issues of the 2013 National Budget.

Address-ing some of Piet-ermaritz-burgs most successful business people, the Deputy Minister called for all munici-palities to moderate electricity

tariff hikes. This news came as a relief for local residents after the Msunduzi Municipality recently proposed an increase of 5.5% on all rates, 10% on water and 18% on electricity. As government we could not raise the tax rate in an ailing economy. We decided to rather put money back into peoples pockets in the form of disposable income so that those people can come and spend the money back in the economy, said Nene.

Amongst other things, the Deputy Minister spoke out against corruption, calling it a well co-ordinated project that must be fought against as it suppresses economic growth.

He also urged businesses to offer opportunities to unemployed youth, saying that the time has now come for South Africans to put their differences aside and stop pursuing personal agendas. [We need to] instead work towards assisting young people of our country who are hard-hit by unem-ployment, Nene stated.

Toyota's original Rav4 might have beenone of the first sports activity or utilityvehicles to hit the road back in 1994, butmuch has changed since then.

Firstly, don't bother remembering how the orig-nal Rav4s looked because this fourth generation,nd all new offering, looks nothing like that. Andecondly, now days SAVs, or SUVs as they are

more commonly known, are common place on ouroads, with choice a plenty in this fiercely com-etitive segment.

Toyota SA says they are ready to continue thisattle against their arch rivals in Hyundai's iX35nd Kia's Sportage with a price entry point below

R300,000 and competitive pricing and spec toontinue up the range. And I am sure they willecause each successive generation of Rav4 hasutsold the previous generation.

I am not going to waste your time getting intoesign language and stuff. You can see the changesor yourself; the Rav4 is now far more angular andlso adopts the new Toyota family face. Some areoing to miss the slightly round and softer lessrown up shape of the old Rav4, and I am surethers will also lament the loss of the signature rearailgate mounted spare wheel. For me personally,he Rav4 looks more like I would have expecteday a new Fortuner to look. No retro cute Rav4tyling here.

Why I also say this, this new Rav4 is lower,

longer and wider than ever before and the pro-portions now seem more in line with a bigger SUVlike the Fortuner. And this feeling is furtherenhanced when you get inside as you will be blownaway by the amount of space available for peopleand luggage.

Leg room, head room, load space, undertraystorage, you name it, it has improved across theboard along with improved quality and er-gonomics, while still maintaining that elevateddriving position so loved by SUV owners and assuch dished up no nasty surprises when we hit theroad on our launch drive around Stiges inBarcelona, Spain.

We are getting four models, three petrol and onediesel, at the beginning of April when Rav4 hits ourshores locally to offer a comprehensive range thatincludes two wheel and all wheel drive options,and manual, auto and CVT transmissions. At entrypoint you can get a two wheel drive 2.0-litre petrolGX spec Rav4 in six-speed manual or CVT option.Next up you have the all wheel drive 2.2 tur-bodiesel, also in GX spec, that only comes in sixspeed manual, and topping the range is the allwheel drive 2.5-litre petrol in VX spec that onlycomes in six speed auto option.

Obviously at a later stage other model deriva-tives might be introduced, we were told no turbopetrols and no hybrid for Rav4, so for now, this iswhat we have.

We never drove the 107kW / 187Nm 2.0-litre,

but I did sample the very decent 132kW / 233Nm2.5-litre four-cylinder first. At sea level there ismore than enough grunt on offer, and the auto boxworked a charm, but up on the Reef, where the airis thin, the pick for me would be the 110kW /340Nm 2.2-litre turbodiesel. The drive from thisderivative was effortless, and thanks to the torquethat is always on call, down changing was min-imal.

A new developed 'Sport' mode and 'Sport'button, as part of Integrated Dynamic Drive Sys-tem, was on call if you wanted to up the ante a littlein terms of accelerator response and handlingsharpness.

Basically what happens is that using informationfrom various sensors (speed, steering angle andyaw rate), the Dynamic Torque Control AWDsystem continuously controls the torque transferbetween the front and rear wheels via an elec-tromagnetically controlled coupling positioned infront of the rear differential.

In 'Normal' mode the system reacts to changes ingrip and moves the torque around, and in 'Sport'mode it is proactive and already starts moving thetorque to the back wheels for added grip evenbefore you want it.

Front to rear torque distribution can vary from100:0 to 50:50, with front-wheel drive (100:0)automatically engaged under normal driving con-ditions to improve fuel consumption.

It did make a difference, but Im not too suremany new Rav4 owners will be punching this

button and attacking mountain passes like we did.It is just not that kind of vehicle. But at least youhave the option.

For off-road driving, the system incorporates anAWD Lock button. This allows you to lock thetorque distribution in a fixed, 50:50 ratio at speedsup to 40km/h. Above this speed, the systemautomatically reverts to Normal mode.

Safety is comprehensively taken care of by newwhiplash injury reducing seats, seven airbags asstandard and other active safety systems thatinclude ABS with EBD, BA, VSC (Vehicle Sta-bility Control) and TRC (Traction Control), andall-wheel drive models are equipped, as standard,with VSC+, which integrates VSC and the ve-hicle's Electric Power Steering (EPS).

The RAV4's already comprehensive standardequipment package is further enhanced by a rangeof innovative, comfort and convenience enhancingfeatures, including a Smart Entry & Start System,dual-zone air conditioning, new seat heaters, au-tomatic tailgate operation, the Toyota Touch ad-vanced multimedia system with USB/iPod con-nectivity and a rear camera, and the Toyota Touch& Go, Touch & Go Plus and Touch Pro navigationsystems overseas. Local spec is still to be con-firmed, but a cell phone drive navigation system ison the cards.

Toyota's all new Rav4 offers plenty and will bea worthy foe to the established players in this muchsought after lifestyle SUV segment of the market inSouth Africa.

Well, that was hardly a sur-prise. If any car deserved tobe named Europe's "Car ofthe Year 2013" it's the new Golf, andas you may have heard, that's justwhat happened earlier this month.

It's also probably not a surprise thatthe Golf 7 is easily the best car I've driventhis year. And while 2013 is only justwarming up, I've already had some heavymetal on test, from a Mercedes-Benz G

a 1.4 TSI Comfortline (90kW) model withseven-speed DSG transmission and I repeatedlyfell in love with this car, and very probably boredfriends with my repeated utterances of just howsublime it really is.

Performance of even the entry-level Golf iscommendable, while the car I had will do a zero-to-100km/h run in 9.3 seconds, topping out at203km/h. Claimed fuel consumption is 5.0 litresper 100km in the combined cycle, and if I'ddriven with an eye on economy, I could probablygave achieved this.

Lighter as it may be, the Golf 7 is also saferand stronger than the outgoing car, while theseats, equipped with optional leather on the test

car I had, are some of the very finest I've everencountered anywhere.

All controls, including the audio system withits touchscreen, operate remarkably intuitively,and all Golfs now come with seven airbags and anelectronic stabilisation programme, as well as anelectronic parking brake, electromechanicalpower-steering, and Climactic air-conditioning.

Cars with Comfortline specification, such asthe one here, also get automatic headlight ac-tivation, a central armrest in the rear, and lumbarsupport on the front seats, among other equip-ment, while range-topping Highline models carryyet more extras.

Safety systems include something called Mul-ti-collision brake system which, as VW puts it,"automatically brakes the vehicle when it isinvolved in an accident to significantly reduce its

residual kinetic energy."Also standard is the XDS electronic dif-

ferential lock. This improves traction and han-

dling, and before was only available on theGolf GTI, which is due to hit the SA market alittle later this year.

There are currently seven models in therange, stretching from the 1.2 TSI Trendline atR233,800 to the 2.0TDI Highline with six-speed DSG at R334,800. All models bar onecome with VW's economy-promoting Blue-Motion Technology. The standard price of thecar that I tested was R279,400. A few extrassuch as leather seats (R11,000) and a panoram-ic roof (R8,800) pushed the price toR304,900.

And that, you might think, is a lot for aturbocharged 1.4-litre hatchback. Until youdrive it and phrases like "stunningly capable"and "beautifully built" and "a triumph for VW"start forming on your lips

Fire fi ght-ers, par-amedics, vol-unteer rescue personnel, life-savers and other emergency res-cue services crew are invited to submit nomi-nations for the 6th annual Cen-trum Guard-ian of the Year Award.

The Centrum Guardian Proj-ect recognises and rewards the acts of courage and self-sacrifi ce that the people who work in the Emergency and Rescue Services industry demonstrate whenever they put their uniforms on.

Nomination forms can be downloaded from the website www.centrumguardian.com and must be submitted by no later than 3 April 2013. The competition is open to registered personnel and volunteers working in the emer-gency and rescue services fi elds in

South Africa. Colleagues or individuals

involved in rescue incidents dat-ing back to January 2012 can sub-mit their stories for consideration. Members of the public are wel-come to share their own stories where emergency services crew saved their lives.

In 2012, 16 semi-fi nalists were profi led on SABC3 in a 13-week documentary drama series called Centrum Guardians 2012, hosted by Ruda Landman, renowned television personality

and journalist. The episodes were dra-matic re-creations of the incidents that the semi-fi nalists were nominated for (by their peers). Torsten Henschel, Leadership Coach and Volunteer Rescue Swimmer for the NSRI Wilderness Station 23, was voted as the winner of the Centrum Guardian Project 2012 for his stamina.
