ANC deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa (pic-tured) has described party president Jacob Zuma, as the action man needed by South Africa in order to move towards prosperity.
He made the remark as he addressed party members at a cadres forum in Edendale, Piet-ermaritzburg on Thursday last week. Ramaphosa said Zumas foresight had led to the formula-tion of the National Development Plan which he insisted will deliver a better life to all South Africans. He said while the ANC had done well after taking over government, there were challenges that needed urgent attention, including job cre-
ation and improved service deliv-ery.
The time for talking is over; we want action, and action man Jacob Zuma will ensure that this country moves forward, said Ramaphosa to thunderous applause.
He was joined by the partys top brass including Naledi Pan-dor, Malusi Gigaba and provincial and regional leaders at the cadres forum.
The ANC deputy president admitted that there were people who were still trapped in poverty, but stressed that the ANC has the plan to deal with such a challenge.
If you ask me what legacy will be left by Jacob Zuma I will
tell you that it is the National Development Plan and the
multi-billion infrastructure proj-ect, said Ramaphosa.
Ramaphosa also boldly pre-dicted an overwhelming major-ity win for the ruling party in next years election, saying Zuma will ensure such a win.
The campaign for an elec-tion victory begins now, said the deputy president calling on party members to start mobilising for the elections.
His address in Edendale con-cluded the days activities which involved a meeting with business leader in Pietermaritzburg, and an interaction with street vendors in the city centre.

Honda hits home runwith budget Brio
The new compact little car from Honda, the Brio. Pics by Gavin Foster.
By Gavin Foster
Honda's new entry-level hatch - a firstsuch offering from the marque in SouthAfrica - was launched in Durban justbefore Christmas and in my book it joins Kia'sPicanto at the head of the class.
The entry-level segment has grown to 24 % ofthe passenger car market as consumers tightentheir wallets, and the flood of cheap, well equippedand rapidly improving Chinese cars at budgetprices has kept the established players on a tightrein when it comes to pricing.
Now that Honda's entered the fray with their firstreally entry-level car the screws are going to betightened even further in the already overcrowdedm a r ke t p l a c e .
The Brio is built in India and Honda SA chose tolaunch it from Ballito, giving us the keys and awave to send us on our way to anywhere wewanted, as long as we were back for lunch. I felt itappropriate to head for Tongaat, the historicalcentre of South Africa's Indian culture, wheremany relatives of Mohandas Gandhi still dwell. This bustling north-coast town has various busi-nesses boasting the famous family name and Iwanted to use it to illustrate the Indian connectionp h o t o g r a p h i c a l l y.
The Brio is a very compact little car, and thevisual styling issue that makes it stand out from thepack is the big all-glass tailgate. The Honda blurbwaffles on about a "Man maximum, machineminimum" philosophy that, they earnestly tell us,means that the interior space of the Brio has beenmaximised by dispensing with anything unnec-essary. The cynic inside me instantly interprets thatas an admission that the car is built to a budget sodon't expect too much, but that is thankfully not thecase. The new Honda comes with pretty well a fullhouse of safety and comfort features, which meansyou get aircon, electric windows all round, ad-justable-height headlights, electric mirrors, a tiltadjustable steering wheel with controls for theMP3, USB and AUX - compatible sound systemthat you also get. Then there are ABS brakes,
airbags, remote central locking and an immobiliser.A possible deal-clincher is the two year/30,000kmservice plan, which essentially means the first twoservices are free, and the three-year 100,000kmwa r r a n t y.
The Honda is a tidy little car and it isn't let downby its 1.2-litre I-VTEC engine that the factoryclaims generates 65kW and 109Nm of power andtorque respectively. That's pretty average for a 1.2or 1.3 litre engine these days and the Brio shiftsalong quite cheerfully on that.
Honda claims a 0-100km/h time of 12,2 secondsfor the five-speed manual version and a rather
lethargic 14,7 for the five-speed auto.I drove only the manual and that would be my
choice. The auto will probably be popular with themany pensioners who have taken Honda to theirbosom over the last few decades. Honda buyers inSouth Africa are on average ten years older thanbuyers of other brands, and at present 55% of themare over 55 years of age. Honda hopes to changethat with the Brio, but I don't see many youngstersopting for the auto version.
The Honda Brio Comfort is a classy little carbearing a well-respected name and it's going to dowell against the many other brands engaged in thebrutal street-fight for sales at the lower end of themarket. At R119,800 for the manual or R10,000more for the auto version it's keenly priced, andHonda's reputation for quality, allied with goodlooks and build quality are going to make it as e l l e r.

The festival attractions will keep petrolheadsentertained for hours as they wonder around thegrounds with the ambient noise of hard revvingengines in the background, together with thecrowd's 'oohs' and 'ahhhs' as drivers come all tooclose to the concrete barriers outlining the streetcircuit.
While June 2013 may seem like a long way offfor many Top Gear fans, the Festival is offeringdiehard supporters the chance at early bird tickets, something you can hold as dear to you as Gollumdid his ring until the big day. So, besides being able

Top Gear Festivalback in Durban
By Miles Downard
15 and 16 June are the most important datesyou need to have in your newly acquired2013 diaries. That's because the Top GearFestival returns to our African shores next year, with Durban once again playing the gracioushost to a new live show and the streets sur-rounding Moses Mabhida Stadium being trans-formed into an action-packed street circuit.
Local petrolheads descended on the festival, heldearlier this year, as if it were the holy shrine ofmotoring, leaving very few disappointed.

South Africa is in seri-ous trouble. The gov-erning party is bankrupt. The leadership is groping in the dark as it lurches from one crisis to another.
By its own admission it is imploding. Jacob Zumas blam-ing the apartheid government and Hendrik Verwoerd for the col-lapsed education system is a damning indictment of 18 years
of ANC fl oundering and tinker-ing, while a whole generation has lost out.
Health services, police ser-vices, social services, power gen-eration, the judiciary, municipal-ities and provincial government are all facing a serious crisis. Cor-ruption is now a norm. I maintain that if the government has the will it can stamp out corruption. But the harsh reality is that it does not
have the capacity or will to do so. We cannot fold our arms while
the country unravels and falls apart at the seams. This must not be allowed to happen on our watch. We owe this to the memory and sacrifi ces of generations and we owe this to our children.
J J Pillay
We are pleased with the South African residents and rate-payers unions bold step, headed by Sunny Gayadin who knows the plight of the ratepayers. This has been dragging for almost 10 years. Everything is at a stand-
still, except the garbage tak-ers. The present councillors are incompetent and do not know the function of a municipality. They failed to call a meeting once in three months. Can any council-lor openly say what they have achieved in the wards? Are they
getting paid for fi ve years doing nothing? Our area is in a mess large potholes, sewerage prob-lems, holes dug and not covered for over a year, pavements sinking and cracked slabs, gutters unseen, tar cracking in the centre of the roads? Why must we pay sewer-age accounts and added tax? The present councillors need to be changed for this municipality to run in a transparent manner.

This letter is regarding private school transport. In Copesville we are not all rich and to send our children to school is very costly. I am a single parent with no income apart from what I earn by working hard.
My child travels from Copes-ville to Northdale and I pay R100 a week for transport.
My child is in high school and after she fi nishes exams the teach-ers dont want the learners in school and whether or not they are writing, we still have to pay full
transport fees for the month. This is greed and lust for
money from the poor. Only in the offi cial holidays do we not have to pay for transport. Its like Im pay-ing more for transport than school fees. I want to know how the prin-cipals can help concerning the exam times, especially in the high school, and those children that travel by private transport from Copesville to Northdale.

Pat Lambie, world renowned rugby player and an avid cricketer, took time out to meet Laeeqa, Naeela and Arshad Mahomed during the
South Africa vs New Zealand cricket match. Lambies all-round play and his position of fi fth on the super rugby point scorers table got him selected for the Springbok squad for the 2012 England tour of South Africa. He took the pitch at half time with the score at 6-6 and helped
the Springboks to a 22-17 victory over England. This was his 12th cap. He was selected as Springbok reserve fullback for The Castle Rugby Championship 2012, but was kept warming the bench in favour of
the regular full back, Zane Kirchner, during the two matches against Argentina in August 2012. On 6 October 2012 he played as reserve
fullback (taking the fi eld at the 64th minute into the game) versus New Zealand at the FNB Stadium, Soweto at the age of only 21.
