Emerald Hills of the Heart: Key Concepts in the Practice of Sufism 1

This book is a comprehensive study of concepts and terms associated with Sufi traditions of Islam. Fethullah Gulen’s informative analysis of Sufi ideas is a must read for those who seek an understanding of the dynamics of Sufism. For Gulen, Sufism is a form of self-purification leading to inner dimension of Islamic rituals, a deeper understanding of the divine acts, and a greater knowledge and love of the Divine. The continual process of spiritual development in Sufism along a path of the innate human poverty, helplessness, and powerlessness before God is undertaken in the knowledge that everything come from God. The first volume of the Emerald Hills of the Heart presents such Sufi concepts like repentance, reflection, self-criticism, asceticism, piety, abstinence, self-supervision and sincerity.

in the Practice of Sufism 4

Concluding a textually long but spiritually endless journey toward insan

al-kamil (the perfect human), this fourth volume approaches Sufism through the

middle way, an approach that revives the legacy of the Prophet Muhammad. With an awareness of the social realities of the 21st

century, concepts such as tranquility, the truth of divinity, life beyond the physical realm, the preserved tablet, the glorified

attributes, and the Beautiful Names of God are delicately explained by Fethullah Gulen.

MUHAMMAD: The Messenger of God

In Muhammad: The Messenger of God, Fethullah Gulen delves deep into the reasons as to how Muhammad, a single man with minimum means, was able to leave indelible marks on millions of minds and souls. Rather than listing events in a chronological biography, Gulen follows an analytical framework of the Prophet’s mission and character, providing numerous accounts from his lifetime. Gulen presents the Prophet in the different roles he assumed within his community as a father, husband, statesman, chief of staff, and an individual with utmost compassion, wisdom, grace, humility, and trustworthiness.

of which is a criterion or pearl of wisdom. In Pearls of Wisdom, Fethullah Gulen has

assembled an awesome collection of wise thoughts and arranged them in logical

subject areas in order that we can use them to examine our lives and benefit from his

wisdom. There are literally hundreds of pearls in this book, and every one of them

requires our immediate attention. (Michael Starzinski)

Speech and Power of Expression

Emphasizing the aesthetic concerns of the Islamic civilization as well as underlining the true nature of the religion, this insightful opus contains a collection of essays on the art of language. Written separately as lead articles for Yagmur, the Turkish literary magazine, the volume eloquently articulates Gulen’s approach to speech as well as his definitions of poetry, history, and beauty, all of which are deeply embroidered around the lacework of Islam. With powerful emphasis on belief in God, each essay addresses an important matter of language that aptly relates to the current state of affairs in the Muslim world and the nature of human existence in the 21st century as a whole.

The Essentials of the Islamic Faith

Fethullah Gulen in this book discusses Islam’s core beliefs. After giving brief summaries of traditional arguments for Gods Existence and Unity, Gulen analyzes modern theories related to nature, natural laws, and causes, as well as matter and chance. Supporting his arguments with accounts of scientific experiments, he also appeals to common sense by asking if any person or thing can be created without an author or by itself. The author is to be commended for relying upon Muslim sources, as well as his own practice and study. He presents Islam as devout and practicing Muslims understand it. It is a refreshing break from

books by scholars who seek to explain a religion that they do not follow, and whose sacred language they often do not know, to others who want to learn about it. (Jack Willoughby)

Toward a Global Civilization of Love and Tolerance

This book touches on certain dynamics regarding the theoretical and cultural basis of the model Fethullah Gulen has developed based on dialogue, tolerance, concurrence among different groups that come from different religions, cultures, and civilizations. Gulen’s model focuses on human beings, those who surround their entire world with thought and action, and who are directed toward love for God and for creation. It is a prime example of an Islamic viewpoint that condemns violence and exclusiveness while emphasizing the dignity of human beings as vicegerents of God on the earth. This book has a double purpose. On the one hand, it is a call to Muslims to a greater awareness

that Islam teaches the need for dialogue and that Muslims are called to be agents and witnesses to God’s universal mercy. On the other hand, it is an invitation to non-Muslims to move beyond prejudice, suspicion, half-truths in order to arrive an understanding what Islam is really about. (Thomas Michel)

The Statue of our Souls

Gulen echoes the great teacher Rumi by telling not to ignore the doctrine of causes, not to sit around heedlessly waiting for God’s favor, but rather to continuously exert ourselves in order to transform this broken world into a world of peace and justice, in accordance with the Will of God. He neither denies reality by turning his back on modernity, nor does he fall into bitterness, incomprehension and fury. His message is essentially a message of peace and hope, a message that is best conveyed in The Statue of Our Souls.

Beginnings and Endings: Fethullah Gülen’s Vision for

Today’s World

Walter Wagner attempts to present a framework of understanding that outlines the philosophy and theology of Fethullah Gulen. This book shows how Gulen’s vision for the

present and future makes the present and future forms of Hizmet an essential part of his wider and urgent call for the

formation of a community of religiously committed and non-religiously

committed persons to work toward a just, equitable and prosperous world

now.Wagner’s book explores the way that

Gulen, in his extensive writings, lays out a vision for humanity to make the most

of its time on earth as the end times near. Wagner shows how Gulen uses

his deep understanding of both Islamic faith and our modern times to lay out a

path for humans to co-exist and live peacefully during their brief lifetimes. In this way, not only can humanity create a better world

“here and now,” fulfilling their destiny as “vicegerents on earth,” but they can best prepare for life in the hereafter. Instead of taking

an apocalyptic view of the world, where religions and ideologies clash, Gulen believes that people of faith and good intentions can

work together to make a more peaceful, prosperous world.

Humanistic Discourse

Mastering Knowledge in Modern Times: Fethullah Gulen as an Islamic Scholar

Although a number of conferences have been organized in recent years emphasizing the social, civic and educational activities of the Gulen Movement, as well as Gulen’s contribution to interreligious dialogue, very little attention has been paid to his formal and informal education, his scholarly works and his interpretation of basic Islamic sources and disciplines in the modern period. In fact, his expertise goes beyond the limitations of modern academic compartmentalization of Islamic studies. This edited book aims to explore Gulen’s personal and theological profile in relation to Qur’anic exegesis (tafsir), Prophetic tradition (hadith), Islamic law (fiqh), Islamic systematic theology (kalam), and Sufism (tasawwuf).

The Muslim World and Politics in Transition: Creative Contributions of the Gulen Movement

As a leading movement in contemporary Turkey with a universal educational and interfaith agenda, the Gulen movement aims to promote creative and positive relations between the West and the Muslim world and to articulate a critically constructive position on such issues as democracy, multiculturalism, globalization, and interfaith dialogue in the context of secular modernity. The Muslim World and Politics in Transition includes chapters written by international scholars with expertise in relation to the contexts that it addresses. The Gulen Hizmet Movement: Circumspect Activism

in Faith-Based Reform

This volume covers the origins, historical development, and ideas of one of the largest and most influential Islamic movements in the world, the Gulen Hizmet Movement. Founded during the Cold War under the inspiration of M. Fethullah Gulen, the GHM expanded to over 130 countries by the first decade of the twenty first century. The movement’s circumspect activism sheltered it from illiberal secular practices in Turkey and has guided it through the anxious post-Cold War process of globalization. This edited volume covers various characteristics of the movement from Gulen’s unconventional oratory to his educational philosophy. Also, the book

covers Gulen’s ideas on Islam and democracy and the GHM’s indirect political engagement compared to the direct engagement of the Muslim Brotherhood. Other chapters in the book cover the role of women in the movement, the GHM’s creation of an alternative public sphere for pious Muslims, and the tension this creation instills in light of Secularism Theory, which is analyzed comparatively with American religious pluralism.

Toward an Islamic Enlightenment: The Gulen Movement

M. Hakan Yavuz offers an insightful and wide-ranging study of the Gulen Movement, one of the most imaginative developments in contemporary Islam. Founded in Turkey by the Muslim thinker Fethullah Gulen, the Gulen Movement aims to disseminate a “moderate” interpretation of Islam through faith-based education. Its activities have fundamentally altered religious and political discourse in Turkey in recent decades, and its schools and other institutions have been established throughout Central Asia and the Balkans, as well as Western Europe and North America. Consequently, its goals and modus operandi have come under increasing scrutiny around the world.

The Gulen Movement: Civic Service without Borders

This book seeks to develop an appropriate discourse for studying the Gulen

Movement and phenomena like it. The established discourse concerns itself with

social movements as protest, as challenge to the System, as contentious actors looking to alter or even overturn existing structures

and/or policies in some field, usually political or economic. Approaching the

matter from social movement theory and taking an insider’s perspective, the author

argues that the Gulen Movement is, as it has always been, non-contentious’ it is not

a marginalized actor working on the System from the outside. On the contrary, it has

always worked within the System – within the boundaries of the laws and public norms that obtain in the

different local and national settings where it has set up institutions.

Embracing the World: Gulen’s Thought and Its Relationship with Jalaluddin Rumi and Others

This book is not a comprehensive study of Rumi and Gülen, but it seeks to explore the places where the thought of the one is echoed in the thinking of the other, either overtly or indirectly—and to note ways in which the opposite is true: that Gülen diverges from Rumi. The book is also seeking to suggest some of the larger contexts in which the thinking of both resides. Given the wide-ranging aspects of their respective writings, it should not be surprising if, minimally, we can find important foundation stones in both philosophy and theology in the edifices that they each construct.

The Gulen Hizmet Movement and its Transnational Activities

This volume of essays on the Gulen, or Hizmet (service) movement, a Turkish,

Sufi Muslim, and humanitarian civil society group, looks at the recent activities of its

followers to practice their form of Islam and carry out collective interfaith projects

at the international level. It adds to the newly burgeoning discourse by focusing on

the ways in which participants challenge ideological and sectarian boundaries.

Included are essays which discuss how the movement is organized, structured, and

institutionalized in many parts of the world, explore Turkey’s global influence, evaluate

criticisms of the movement, and suggest directions for further research. While

most previous scholarly attention has focused on the theological and philosophical ideas of Fethullah Gulen, the movement’s inspirational figure, less attention has been paid to the ways

in which participants have interpreted and carried out Gulen’s messages in the contemporary world.

This is a book about an Islamic movement, the Gülen Movement, that is rooted in a moderate version of Islam and that promotes interfaith and intercultural dialog and global peace. Based on interviews with supporters of the movement in Turkey and in the U.S. and visits to Gulen-inspired schools, hospitals, newspapers and relief organizations, the book describes a movement that has millions of supporters in Turkey and that has spread to over 100 countries on five continents. The movement is rooted in moderate Islam and is committed to educating youth, fostering interfaith and intercultural dialog, assisting the needy in society and contributing to global peace. Strategic Defamation of Fethullah Gulen: English vs. Turkish

Fethullah Gülen is a moderate Turkish Muslim scholar who is known mostly for his education and dialogue activities. The Hizmet Movement, inspired by Gülen, has established hundreds of education and dialogue institutions throughout the world. Several books and hundreds of articles and news reports have been written about Gülen himself and the movement. In recent years, a defamation campaign has been launched against Gülen and the Hizmet Movement. Although these defamation articles may seem random, this book will show that the articles are written strategically in a campaign manner. In Strategic Defamation of Fethullah Gülen, close to 500 defamation articles, books, and other forms of writings are analyzed according to their languages. Koç concludes that these defamations are not random and that they appear according to their respective audiences.

Wrestling with Free Speech, Religious Freedom, and Democracy

in Turkey: The Political Trials and Times of Fethullah Gulen

The political trial of Fethullah Gülen, a moderate Turkish religious leader, helped

to greatly expand civil liberties and strengthen democracy in Turkey. The trial began in 2000 in an Ankara state security

court (now disbanded) and ended in 2008 in an appeals court in Gülen’s favor. This

book explores Gülen’s trial, examines the evolving process of Turkey’s efforts to

enter the European Union, and discusses ways that the EU’s insistence on expanding

civil liberties in Turkey and reforming the judicial system affected the outcome of the

trial (and vice versa). As a coda, the book considers unsuccessful efforts to block

Gülen’s application for immigrant status in the United States as a religious scholar, which

occurred during the same time as his political trial in Turkey.

Preventing Violence and Achieving World Peace: The Contributions of the Gulen Movement

How can we address the seemingly endless conflicts in the world, particularly those arising from misunderstandings of Islam by both Muslims and non-Muslims? Preventing Violence and Achieving World Peace: The Contributions of the Gülen Movement presents the essays of eight scholars who consider the diverse ways in which the Gülen Movement or hizmet («service to others») - inspired by contemporary Turkish social philosopher Fetullah Gülen - has worked to answer this question. Drawing from various intellectual and theological sources, particularly Sufism, these essays indicate multiple instances of positive interfaith and/or multicultural dialogue. In addition, they consider how the writings of Gülen and the works of the Gülen Movement, through an extensive program of education and communication, have contributed significantly to efforts that oppose violence and shape universal peace.

This collection deals with challenges and opportunities faced by Muslims and the wider society in Europe, following the Madrid train bombings of 2004 and the London Transport attacks of 2005. The contributors explore the challenges to the concept and practice of civility in public life within a European context, and demonstrate the contributions that can be made in this regard from the thought and practice of the global movement inspired by the Turkish Muslim scholar Fethullah Gülen. The importance and distinctiveness of the teaching of Fethullah Gülen and the practice of the movement is that it is rooted in a confident Turkish Islamic heritage while being fully engaged with modernity. It offers the possibility of a contextualized renewal of Islam for Muslims in Europe while being fully rooted in the teachings of the Qu’ran and the Sunnah of the Prophet.

The Gülen Movement:

This book examines and discusses the strategic maneuvering of the Gülen

Movement, which is an influential religio-social movement in Turkey, in its power

struggle with its rival groups and ideologies including the secular elite; through an

analysis of internal and external dynamics behind its increasing prominence. The

book claims that the Gülen Movement, through its educational activities, creates

a reciprocal deal where both parties profit. While the Gülen Movement enlarges its

scope, spreads its message and proceeds to “cultivate” its counter-elite, it provides

its followers with the ability to climb in the social strata and wholly participate in the society; not

only by providing them with the material resources they need, but also rendering them as individuals who are conforming to the contemporary set of values and

lifestyles.

Making Peace in and with the World: The Gulen Movement and Eco-Justice

This book is a representative study and working analysis of contemporary Islamic thought on eco-justice. It cuts through problems facing humanity today, ranging from inequality and violence in the smaller globalized world to ‘the end/death of nature’ as signaled by various environmental and ecological crises. The phrase Eco-Justice in this volume signifies this dual reality, thereby offering a unique and insightful view that justice in the world must go hand in hand with ecological justice if peace is to be made. This volume also corresponds to studies in the interdisciplinary field of ‘war and peace.’ Since it deals centrally with the question of religion and eco-justice, this volume challenges assumptions of exclusivist religion, religion-oriented violence and the religion-based Clash of Civilizations. The contributors of this volume from diverse academic backgrounds take Fethullah Gulen and the Gulen movement as the case study.

of people from all walks of life throughout the world. This work illustrates the ways
