Publication/Scientific Paper

• A scientific paper is a written and published report describing original research results

• The purpose of scientific paper is to communicate new scientific findings

Dr. Syed Sameer

Publication Process• Pre Submission Process

• Prior to research

• Understanding the publication process

• Writing the manuscript (draft)

• Submission Process• Selecting a journal

• Submitting the manuscript

• Responding to peer reviews

• Publication

Avoiding common errors

Dr. Syed Sameer

Prior to Research• What study should I carry out?• What will be my samples size, methodology etc?• Where will I publish the results (Journal/Conference)?• How many papers will I publish with the data?• To which journal(s) will I submit these data?• Who will be my co-authors? • Who will be my collaborators? (Working in lab groups or in teams

across disciplines and institutions distributes this workload efficiently)

Dr. Syed Sameer

Understanding the publication process• Manuscript Preparation• Submission (Online System/Via E-mail)• Acceptance of submission (Post technical check)• Peer Review • Accepted for publication as such • Accepted after revision (Major/Minor)

• Response to reviews/Modification as per reviews• Re-submission of edited manuscript• Reviewed Again• Accepted/Rejected

• Pre-publication formatting

Dr. Syed Sameer

Minimum of Six

Months

Writing the manuscript - Essentials• The words and figures and data presented must be the

original work• Authors should make a substantive contribution to

the paper• Authors should be added or dropped with full

disclosure/consent• Data must be fully and truthfully reported• Errors must be fully and truthfully reported• Data can be re-used, but with proper citation

Dr. Syed Sameer

Writing the manuscript - Format• Scientific papers are commonly organized in IMRaDc format

nowadays• Introduction• Methodology• Results • Discussion

• Conclusion

• Each section should essentially contain three or more paragraphs

• This will serve as your first draft copy

Dr. Syed Sameer

Essential Parts of a Manuscript• Title: Describe concisely the core contents of the paper

• Abstract: Summarize the major elements of the paper

• Introduction: provide context and rationale for the study

• Methodology: Describe the experimental design & procedures so it is reproducible

• Results: Summarize the findings without interpretation

• Discussion: Interpret the findings of the study

• Summary/Conclusion: Summarize/Conclude the findings

• Acknowledgement: Give credit to those who helped you

• References: List all scientific papers, books and websites that you cited

Dr. Syed Sameer

Selecting a journal• It should cover your area of research• The readers of the journal should

match your target audience• Choose a more generalized journal

carrying wide variety of areas of research• For a strong research/manuscript

choose high impact journals

Dr. Syed Sameer

Selecting a journal• The most common way of selecting

the right journal is to look at the articles you have consulted to prepare your manuscript• Probably most of them are

concentrated in one or two journals • Read very recent publications in each

candidate journal (even in press), and find out the hot topics and the types of articles accepted

Dr. Syed Sameer

Selecting a journal

• Read the journal guidelines carefully and early on

Dr. Syed Sameer

Guide for Authors• Contains information about • The editors, co-editors, publication house, impact factor, country of origin• Areas/Topics which the journal covers• Impact factors over the five years• Indexing and abstracting • Publication fee and mode of printing article (Free/Pay per view etc)

• Contains Guideline for the authors about• How to prepare the manuscript (Format)• How to prepare table, figures and other media• How to submit the paper• How to follow the rest of publication process

Dr. Syed Sameer

Prior to - Submitting the manuscript

Dr. Syed Sameer

Prior to - Submitting the manuscript• Figures and Tables should be made separately from the main article file & should be self explanatory• Figures should be in the 800x600 or higher resolution preferably in TIFF or JPEG format• Tables should be in MS-Excel file• Both figures and tables should be cited within the text of the main paper • Legends to figures and tables should be at the end of the

Essential Parts of a Manuscript

Dr. Syed Sameer

Rejection!!! …………………. Reasons• It does not fall within the Aims and Scope of the target Journal• It fails the technical screening• It's incomprehensible• It's incomplete• The procedures, methods and/or analysis of the data is seen to be

defective• The conclusions cannot be justified on the basis of the rest of the paper• It's is simply a small extension of a different paper, often from the same authors

• It's boring or of marginal interest to the field

Dr. Syed Sameer

Publication

• Online Pre- publication – Ahead of Print• Contains DOI number only for identification• No Issue number, No Page number

• Actual Publication – Hard copy in Issue• Contains Issue number and Page number for citation

Dr. Syed Sameer

Avoid Common Errors•Be sure the journal is suitable for your research

•Read and follow all formatting guidelines

•Keep in good communications with co-authors

•Keep the paper clearly organized and place information in the correct location

•Be sure you know the existing research and cite it correctly

Dr. Syed Sameer

Avoid Common Errors•Avoid plagiarism of others’ work

•Avoid multiple publication of the same work, never submit your manuscript to more than one journal at a time
