Principal’s report

Welcome BBQ & Information Night

This year we are combining our Parent Information

sessions with a ‘Welcome’ BBQ. The evening will be

held on Thursday 23 February, commencing at 5:30

pm. The program for the evening is attached and I do

hope we get as many of our families as possible to

come along. Thank you to our P&C who will be

catering on the night. Come along and enjoy a sausage

sandwich and a drink, whilst getting to meet other

families and our staff; as well as finding out all about

your child’s classroom programs. If parents are unable

to attend the information session, teachers will have a

handout which can be sent home upon request.

Sporting House Captains

Congratulations to our newly elected Sporting House

Captains. These students have an important role to

play in manning our sports shed, running assemblies

and assisting with sporting events. House captains for

2017 are:

SLATER: Bayley Guinan & Grace Robertson

FLOYD: Charlie McEwen & Ella Fitzgerald

LATHAM: Benjamin Gallop & Chelsea O’Rafferty

Grace, Bayley, Ella, Charlie, Chelsea & Benjamin are

ready to carry out their duties.

SRC class members

Also elected and presented with their badges are our

Semester 1 Student Representative Councillors (SRC).

Each class votes for a boy and a girl to be their voice at

regular SRC meetings. Mrs Shephard is our SRC

coordinator and she ensures that these children have

lots of opportunities during their term as an SRC.

Shortly a meeting will be held where the SRC decide

upon their fund-raising ventures for the semester; as

well as discussing any suggestions they have for

improving our school. Semester 1 SRCs are:

KINDER: Charlie Munday & Tilly Hanlon

1/2M: Kaden Shaw & Lucy McGregor

1/2D: Ace Hayman & Delaney Baxter

1/2W: Angus Baldry & Shaylie Johns

3/4M: Tristan Davis & Mya Chisholm

3/4D: Jack Henderson & Aimee White

5/6S: Cooper Vanzanten & Paige O’Rafferty

5/6B: Cody Hackett & Shallan Wright

Safety in Hot Weather

We received several calls last week regarding whether

or not our school is air conditioned and whether our

school closes during high temperatures. The

Department of Education provides advice to schools

regarding supporting students in hot weather (link to

this is below):

http://www.schools.nsw.edu.au/gotoschool/a-

z/hotweather.php

At Junee North we ensure the utmost safety and

protection of all of our students and staff during the

heat. Every learning space has air conditioning,

students are provided with access to several areas

during break times in the heat (under the COLA, inside

the library and hall), students are encourage to drink

water regularly - drink bottles are kept on their desks

at all times. We even allow a quick run under the

sprinkler to cool off!

Reminders

Welcome BBQ/ Information sessions:

Thursday 23 February – starting at 5:30 – see note for

session times.

No Hat Play in the Shade

School hats must be worn during break, PE and sport

times. Please ensure hats (& other items are clearly

labelled with your child’s name.

Canteen

Canteen days are Wednesdays & Fridays. (No canteen

on swimming carnival day!)

School Banking

Banking is every Thursday. Students are to put their

bankbooks into their class bank bags. There are some

great incentives for regular banking – see our poster

outside the office!

P&C News Annual General Meeting

Our Annual General Meeting will be held on Tuesday

28 February. All positions will be declared vacant

and we are keen to see some new faces take up these

positions.

Our P&C provide wonderful support to our school

through fundraising, running our canteen and

providing a forum for our families to be involved in the

education of their children.

Air conditioner Funding

At our last P&C meeting it was decided that funds

would be provided to assist with the upgrade of air

conditioning in several areas of the school. Whilst all

classrooms and learning areas are air conditioned,

several room have quite old units which require

constant repair, as well as having old blue gas heaters

which are not conducive to the best learning

conditions for our students. Quotes are currently being

sourced. This is just one of the many ways that our

P&C helps out our wonderful school and benefits every

student.

What’s happening in our school?

Swimming Carnival

Our annual school swimming carnival was held on

Wednesday with great success. It was wonderful to see

a high level of participation and tremendous

sportsmanship, with students cheering on their house

mates. A big thank you to the helpers from Junee High

School, and to our parent helpers. Your assistance

certainly made our day run smoothly. Special thanks to

Mrs Davis on her wonderful organization of our

carnival.

Parent Volunteers

We love having our parents & family members helping

out at school events, in the classroom and in our

canteen. New Department of Education require all

volunteers to complete a Working with Children

Check. Volunteers simply need to go online at the link

below and follow the procedures (you will need your

driver’s licence details). There is no cost involved for

volunteers.

Parent Information

Head Lice

Unfortunately head lice are a part of school life that

can be frustrating for our families. When we are

notified, a letter is sent to all families within that class.

Recently we have had several cases and we would

appreciate all families checking their child’s hair for any

eggs/ live lice and treating accordingly.

School A to Z

School A to Z is a great website offering parents

practical advice about homework, tips on learning,

wellbeing, technology and resources to help support

your child's social, physical and mental development.

There are assignment starters based on popular school

project topics, with facts and links to credible websites

to help avoid last-minute assignment meltdowns.

The site gives even the busiest parents access to some

of Australia’s best teachers and experts, 24 hours a day,

7 days a week. Expert contributors include maths guru

Adam Spencer, psychologist Andrew Fuller, parenting

expert Michael Grose and personal trainer Michelle

Bridges.

There’s even a section on healthy school lunch boxes,

with recipes from leading chefs.

School A to Z can also be downloaded as a free app!

You can find answers while you’re racing home from

work or waiting for training to finish, thanks to free

mobile apps that feature hundreds of definitions about

maths and English terms, illustrated examples and

instructional videos, as well as kid-friendly educational

maths and spelling games.
