Funding types • Work study
• Employer typically pays 40% of salary. Feds pay 60%. Must be work study eligible. Administered by the financial aid office on UW main campus. This will affect how much you can take out in law school loans but will help reduce your post-grad debt burden
• Education stipend • Americorps JD administered by Equal Justice Works (formerly summer corps)
• Position Linked Grant or Fellowship • Fellowships that are directly linked to positions. Apply for funding and
internship simultaneously • AFL-CIO law student summer, Peggy Browning Fellowship, Laurel Rubin
Farmworker Justice Internship, Steiger Fellowship, Goodwin Proctor Fellowships
• Separate Grant or Fellowship* This is our focus today • Grants or fellowships that are applied for separately from your internship
position. You must first get an internship offer and then you apply for funds. *This is the most common source of summer funding

Typical Awards & Deadlines
Awards
• Awards range from $1000-$6000
• Some student combine 2 or more small awards
• Most common award is $5000
Deadlines
• As early as December through April.
• Bulk of deadlines are in March/April
• Most UW related grants are synched with the PILA application deadline usually the 1st week of April.
Civil Legal Aid Public interest legal work. Work involving direct civil legal services to low-income client communities
• Domestic violence, child advocacy, education equity, consumer protection, immigrant rights, housing, homelessness, public benefits, family law, disability rights, civil rights, employment, LGBT rights, environmental justice or protection, health care access
• May include some policy work
• PILA • John Paul Stevens Fellowship (administered by PILA)

What about Judicial Internships? • Judicial internships are
rarely funded by 3rd party funders
• Most students obtain academic credit (externship) and obtain financial aid Exception: Judicial Intern Opportunity Program- $2000 award
Provides opportunities to students who are members of racial and ethnic groups that are traditionally underrepresented in the profession. The program also provides opportunities to students with disabilities, students who are economically disadvantaged, and students who identify themselves as LGBT. Act Fast!
