Along with food and drinks, Spikers offers four seasons of volleyball league play from March to October on their 10 sand volleyball courts. With social distance guidelines in place, they were not able to host their first leagues of the year. Now, Spikers intends to start games again in June. Gabe Butler and Jen Knihal, owners of Spikers, hope to start games on June 1, but are waiting on clarification from the Sarpy County Health Department. Governor Pete Ricketts listed volleyball, along with other sports, that will be allowed to resume with practices beginning June 1 and games on June 18. However, the Directed Health Measure (DHM) only mentions youth sports. Butler and Knihal want to find out if the DHM includes adult leagues like the ones Spikers has every year. However, they do not want to make that decision without getting clarification first. “If they give us the go ahead for that, we are ready to go,” Knihal said. Normally, Spikers requires a payment for registration. Due to the current situation, registration just holds a team’s spot. Spikers is not asking for money with registration. Once they can start leagues, the usual fees will be taken from each team. “We aren’t doing online payments for teams right now because we don’t know when we are going to start,” Butler said. “We didn’t want to deal with giving refunds if we weren’t going to play at all.” If Spikers leagues cannot start June 1, but can on June 18, Knihal said they will prorate the price. If they can start June 1, Spikers will offer two eight-week sessions for the summer months. If they do get pushed back to starting later in June and the session can only be six weeks, that is when they will adjust their pricing. “at is another reason we are waiting to take payment,” Knihal said. “We want to make sure it is fair and they are getting what they paid for.” Butler and Knihal said they normally have 20 teams signed up for the leagues. However, because of social distancing regulations, they will limit the numbers of teams that sign up. ey will have a maximum of 12 teams to stay in the restriction of 25 percent of their outdoor capacity. Spikers is open for regular business and carry out. “We are doing more carry out than walk-in right now,” Butler said. “People are still a little bit freaked out.” Spikers has also moved all of their specials to include to-go orders. Usually, specials are given to dine-in customers only. With everything going on and take-out orders being more popular, Butler said they felt it was necessary to allow their daily specials to be given to customers who carry out as well. “We are doing what we can within what we are allowed to do,” Butler said.
