IAML Annual Conference in Budapest 11

PUBLIC LIBRARIES PROFESSIONAL BRANCH

There were three meetings of the Branch, with attendances of between 30 and 45 people. Projects in progress were reviewed, and it was decided that two would have to be regarded as being in abeyance: those on a) standards - because no report had been received during the present year, and b) the possibil ity of published editions of selected musical works to be found in manuscript in library collections - be cause of doubt as to the current availability of many of the scores thought likely to be source material. The International basic list of professional literature, on the other hand, was very much alive and well, thanks to the work of the editor Evelyn van Kaam, who despite considerable difficulty over the past few years in ob taining contributions had now completed the first draft. A small committee of Bodil Foss, Heinz Werner and Thor Wood was formed to scrutenize the titles; once the final draft was approved it would be submit ted to Fontes for publication in either the journal itself or an appendix, hopefully in 1982.

Although the new Rules of Procedure governing the internal affairs of the Association have yet to be adopted, elections in the Branch were due this year and duly took place. Eric Cooper (England) was re elected President on the understanding that he wishes to retire at a further election to be held as soon as the new Rules are in operation. Evelyn van Kaam (Holland) was elected Vice-President, and Liz Hart (England) re-elected Secretary. In addition Bodil Foss (Denmark) agreed to be nominated as Fontes As sociate Assistant Editor for Public Libraries, a nomination later confirmed by IAML Council.

The greater part of each session was devoted to prepared papers which are printed in full in the follow ing pages. The first of these, on public music libraries in Hungary was given, appropriately, in the Munici pal Ervin Szabo Library Music Division, whose interior had just undergone major alterations and was not at that time re-opened to the public. Members of the Branch were fully appreciative of all the library staffs efforts in preparing the library for the meeting, and were delighted to congratulate the Librarian Agnes Szalai on having been awarded the Ervin Szabo Medal, one of only two librarians in the country to have received it.
