By Motoring StaffThe successful styling of the Renault Mganehas been fine-tuned for the 2012 range, toconvey a fresher, even more modern appear-ance, with its roots in RenaultSport.

The new range went on sale in South Africa inS e p t e m b e r.

Key styling changes to the front end include anew bumper with a revised air intake grille fea-turing a sleek new design to create an impression ofgreater substance.

The colour palette has been enhanced for the2012 Mgane range with the addition of thesophisticated Glazed Chestnut brown, majorelleblue and pearl white hues with malta blue ex-clusively on GT line.

The Mgane Hatch boasts a wider, more elegantlower grille that conveys an image of style andsophistication. Gloss black inserts and chrome fog

lamp housings add a further touch of class.The Coup's front-end design is visually dif-

ferentiated from the five-door variants with theadoption of a sportier, more dynamic bumper andgrille, with bold integrated air intakes that arefinished in either gloss black, or chromed on therange-topping model.

From the Dynamique level upwards, standardLED daytime running lights provide an eye-catching new lighting signature, while body-coloured side protective mouldings and door han-dles refine the car's silhouette. The LED daytimerunning lights are also an option on the CoupExpression.

The new bumpers have increased the frontoverhang and overall vehicle length by 8 mm on thehatch and 17mm on the coup versions respec-t ive l y.

The GT Line is distinguished by extensive use of

colour coding and contrasting dark grey accents,complemented by a uniquely sporty front bumpertreatment that incorporates new, boomerang-shaped LED running lights in the fog light re-cesses. The GT Line models also get distinctive GTLine and unique Turbo badging.

As the performance flagship, the Mgane Re-naultSport 265 receives a revised aerodynamicfront skirt incorporating the new-look six-LEDdaytime running lights first seen on the newlimited-edition Mgane RS Trophy. The Sportmodel also receives new Tibor 18-inch wheels,while the Cup and Trophy feature 19-inch Steevrims - the latter with red edging and high-performance Bridgestone RE050A tyres.

Several changes have been made to the interiorof the Mgane model range in order to improveperceived quality at all levels of the line-up,including new trim for the Expression, Dynamiqueand GT Line models.

New to the line-up of the advanced range ofengines is the high-tech 1.6-litre dCi 130 Energyturbodiesel engine first seen on the new Scnic, andnow introduced on the new Mgane Hatch Dy-namique.

Delivering 96kW from a capacity of just1,598cc, this is the most powerful diesel engine forits size. With a generous 320Nm of torque - some80 percent of which is available from 1,500r/min -

it provides crisp, responsive acceleration andgenuine driving enjoyment.

Combined with the benefits of Renault's Stop &Start technology with braking/deceleration energyrecovery, the 1.6 dCi Energy achieves a 20 percentreduction in fuel consumption, compared to theprevious 1.9 dCi, along with significantly loweremissions. It is credited with a combined cycle fuelconsumption of just 4,0l/100km and a corre-sponding emissions rating of only 104g ofCO2/km.

Mgane Hatch and Coup buyers also have thechoice of the renowned 1.4 Turbo Control Ef-ficiency four-cylinder petrol engine, which isexclusive to the sophisticated GT Line variants. Itproduces 96kW at 5,500rpm and a solid 190Nmfrom just 2,250rpm. Combined cycle consumptionis rated at 6,3l/100km, with a CO2 figure of145g/km.

The familiar 1,598cc 16-valve petrol engine isalso on offer in conjunction with both the Ex-pression and Dynamique specification levels. Itdevelops 83kW at 6,000r/min and 151Nm at4,250rpm, with a combined fuel consumption of7,5l/100km.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, the revisedMgane RenaultSport range boasts the uprated 2.0-litre turbocharged engine introduced in May for theexclusive Mgane RS Trophy. All versions, in-cluding the Sport, Cup and Trophy now produce195kW and 360Nm, adding to the pure exhilarationof this scintillating range.
