Public Environmental Awareness

Under the Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems (MS4) permit requirement, Orleans Parish provides the Storm Drain Markers as a tool to increase public environmental awareness to reduce urban/non-point water pollution.

Storm Drain Placarding Plan

• Part of the MS4 Drain Marker program heighten the awareness of what ends up in the drainage system.

• MS4 Drain Markers are for educational purposes.

• Warning of potential fines for dumping any type of oil/debris that would inpede the flow and pollute the system.

Safety

There are some safety issues with placing the drain

markers • 1. Always look out for snakes.

• 2. Beware of sharp objects.

• 3. Be careful around openings.

• 4. Use caution with epoxy adhesives.

• It is recommended that you wear plastic gloves and do not expose the epoxy to heat, sparks, your skin, your eyes, or your nose.

• Avoid breathing the vapors of the epoxy. (Place curb marking on outdoor drains only!)

• Use safety glasses.

• Wear orange safety vest.

• Wear gloves.

• The surface must be clean, dry, and free of loose debris.

• Remove any foreign material like debris, old paint, and oil because this will affect the adhesion of the epoxy.

• Apply the epoxy from the squeeze tube in a spiral on the back of the storm drain marker. Start 1/8 inches in from the outside edge and apply an even bead around the entire edge and then work to the center.

• Place the marker on the application surface. Push down hard with a twisting motion forcing epoxy out from the edge. It is important that the entire edge of the marker is sealed to the application surface.

FIRST AID procedures

• Inhalation: Remove to fresh air, administer oxygen or CPR.

• Eyes: Flush eyes with water for at least 15 minutes. Contact physician.

• Skin Contact: Wash any skin that contacts the epoxy with soap and water.

• Ingestion: Do not induce vomiting Contact physician immediately.
