Overview:We are looking to make significant improvements to the Wheatfield Way area and to benefit all road users, by improving the environment for pedestrians and cyclists, through the creation of improved crossings, public realm spaces and a segregated cycle-way. The scheme would be complemented by the introduction of a 20mph limit.

We have used the public feedback we received earlier in 2016 to identify the improvements needed to transform the area into an attractive gateway to Kingston.

Vision:To form a well linked, green corridor along the main thoroughfare of Kingston, creating an environment for people which is safe, attractive and accessible to all whilst respecting and connecting to the heritage status of the nearby town centre.

Objectives:• contribute to the delivery of wider Go Cycle

programme outcomes• provide a strategically important quality

designated cycle route with a particular focus on safety, that connects with the wider network in Kingston and beyond

• create a green corridor that improves the appearance and sense of place

• transform the area into a series of attractive gateways and connected places for people

• maintain the use of Wheatfield Way for general traffic and buses and improve safety

WHEATFIELD WAY AREA CONSULTATION

Your top three suggested improvements are:

• separating bicycles from general traffic• improving the quality of public spaces• reducing congestion, motor vehicle noise and speed

The Wheatfield Way area comprises of a number of streets including: Wheatfield Way, Old London Road, Clarence Street and College roundabout as well as a number of side streets: Ladybooth Road, Orchard Road, Fairfield North, Fairfield Road and Brook Street. (See map on page 4)

The map above shows the proposed improvements to the street environment in the Wheatfield Way area.

Proposals:• a new segregated two-way cycle facility• a series of four attractive connected places

for people • 20mph limit throughout the area and raised

tables at key crossing points• retention of existing number of highway

lanes, except at a 50m stretch where three lanes will be reduced to two, and a left filter

lane into Orchard Road • loading bay on Clarence Street reduced by

one metre • no left turn out of Brook Street• net increase of street trees, many of

which will be implemented in parallel with new developments

• decluttering the streetscape

OVERALL PROPOSALS

Impacts:We have carried out traffic modelling on the proposals to understand what impact the proposed changes would have on general traffic, buses and pedestrians. The results have shown that some journey times will change slightly. We will continue to review and amend traffic signal timings to ensure that impacts are minimal.
