Small wader with black legs, narrow eye stripe,white supercilium and forehead, small dark patch on upper breast separates it from little ringed plover. In the breeding plumage the male has contrasting head marking and a bright rufous crown absent in resident south Indian race, white collar on nape. In flight a narrow wing bar and prominent white sides of tail distinctive.

H abi ts: Seen in mixed flocks of other waders. A bird of mud flats, sandy shores of rivers, estuaries and tanks and also seen in sea shores.

Food : Feeds on crustaceans, insect lar vae etc.

K RUSTY Reactor for Space M i ssi on

NASA and the Depar tm ent of Energy?s National Nuclear Secur i ty Adm in istr at ion

(NNSA) have successful ly dem onstrated a new nuclear r eactor power system that could

enable long-durat ion crewed m issions to the M oon, M ars and dest inat ions beyond.

NASA has announced the resul ts of th is dem onstrat ion cal led the K i lopower Reactor

Using St i r l ing Technology (KRUSTY) exper im ent. This system that could enable robot ic

m issions to deep space and provide power for crewed spacecraft and hum an outposts on the

M oon and M ars.

The KRUSTY reactor un i t is sm al l , on the scale of an oversized f loor lam p. The KRUSTY

fission system uses a sol id cast U-235 reactor core, about the size of a paper towel r ol l . U-235 is

sur rounded by a beryl l ium oxide reflector. This r eflector focuses neutron em issions and

returns their energy back in to the core to m in im ize nuclear gam m a radiat ion which could

im pair on-board electron ics.

The key to keeping the reactor core as l ight and eff icient as possible is m axim ising the

num ber of atom s of U-235 i t contains. H ighly enr iched uranium m etal would be the best fuel

for such a reactor. H owever , pure m etal fuel would present i ts own problem s fr om a

m echanical poin t of view: for exam ple, the m etal becom es very soft at h igh tem peratures. The

researchers found that the opt im um fuel for the reactor would be an al loy contain ing 7%

m olybdenum .

The reactor can be star ted at any t im e dur ing the m ission and one can turn down the

power and turn up the power. The power can go up to 1,000 watts al l the way down to 50 or 40

watts, depending on the dem ands of the spacecraft . To turn the power up and down, the

Ki lopower design uses a rod of boron carbide which absorbs neutrons. W hen the rod is pul led

out, the reactor turns on as neutrons begin to m ove fr eely and f ission with other atom s in a

chain react ion. W hen the rod is sl id back in to the reactor core, the chain react ion is stopped.

El ect r i ci ty Gen er at i on :

The heat generated by U-235 f issions, is then tr ansfer red via passive sodium heat pipes.

The heat pipes tr anspor t approxim ately 4 kW of therm al energy over a distance of 1m ,

attached to the reactor core. Passive heat pipes f i l led with l iquid sodium then tr ansfer the

reactor core heat to one or m ore St i r l ing engines. The engines use heat to create pressure,

which m oves a piston ? m uch as old coal-powered ships used steam pressure to r un their

pistons. W hen coupled to an al ternator , the St i r l ing engine produces electr ici ty. The

Ki lopower reactor could produce 1-10 k i lowatts of electr ical power , cont inuously for ten years

or m ore.

K RUSTY for Space M i ssi on s:

A space nuclear r eactor could provide a h igh-energy densi ty power source with the

abi l i ty to operate independent of solar energy or or ientat ion, and the abi l i ty to operate in

extrem ely harsh envir onm ents, such as the M ar t ian sur face. Solar power is a cheap and easy

way to power a spacecraft , but the eff iciency drops off sharply as you get far ther fr om the sun.

On M ars, for exam ple, solar panels produce m uch less power than they do on Ear th. In

addi t ion, M ar t ian dust storm s can last for m onths. The radio therm al generator s (RTGs) used

on rovers l ike Cur iosi ty are m ore rel iable, as they conver t heat fr om radioact ive decay dir ect ly

in to electr ici ty. H owever , they don?t produce very m uch power. Nuclear system s would l ikely

offer weight and operat ional advantages over an equivalent solar ar ray and energy storage

system .

Safety:

Sel f-r egulat ion has been a crucial r equirem ent in design ing the reactor. This feature not

on ly increases the safety of the reactor but also fr ees astronauts fr om having to m onitor the

controls. Addit ional ly, the reactor wi l l not be turned on unt i l i t is far away fr om Ear th.

Calculat ions show that, under al l worst-case condit ions, there's no chance that the reactor

would com e on accidental ly, [even] dur ing a launch accident. Nuclear r eact ion control is

provided by a single rod of boron carbide that is in i t ial ly fu l ly inser ted, so that pre-launch

radiat ion is negl igible. Once the rod is extracted the nuclear chain react ion wi l l star t but

cannot be stopped com pletely, al though the depth of inser t ion provides a m echanism to adjust

the heat output fr om the reactor core to the load dem and.
