HULL PUB NEWS by Jill Walker 7

Hello and a Happy New Year to you all. Thisedition of Hull Pub News has some good newswith pubs being re-opened and I’m pleased toreport the following:

The Minerva after a short closure following thedeparture of the licensee Phil Daly has thankfullynow been re-opened with Lee Kirman in charge.Lee tells us that the plan is to have Pilots Pride(new recipe), Marstons EPA, Hobgoblin, a GreatNewsome product and Tetley cask. Homecooked food is now available with evening diningto follow in time. Pie night and Curry nights areplanned and fresh fish and chips all day Fridayswhen they get into the swing of things. Also 2 oldhand pulls will be repaired soon, giving 7 in total.

The Olde Corn Exchange is another pub whichre-opened shortly before Christmas. LicenseeAdam Scruton also runs Ye Olde Black Boy inHigh Street. Corn Exchange has 10 hand pumpson the bar and has been tastefully decorated.Well worth popping in and a welcome addition tothe old town real ale scene.

Bar Exchange has now been re-opened bylicensee Paul Crosskill who left The George,Land of Green Ginger for that purpose. Paul tellsus that they have 7 real ales and 3 cidersavailable. This is another welcome addition toour old town pubs. The George is now under themanagement of Ann Hinds, we wish her the best.

The Botanic, on Spring Bank is now refurbishedand open with two hand pumps on the bar. However when I popped in on Christmas Evethey had no beer on. I’ve had a report fromanother member that they also found it lacking incask ales when they popped in.

The Tap on Spring Bank re-opened beforeChristmas but unfortunately has recently closedand is for sale freehold for £140,000+VAT.

The Hole in the Wall on Spring Bank : despitedifficult conditions, Wendy has run this notedcask ale pub for 9 years and still servesAbbeydale Moonshine [Hull’s only outlet] andRoosters or Summer Lightning. Well worth avisit.

The Crown on Holderness Road has re-openedunder new management.

Well that’s all the good news but I’m rather sad toreport that The White Hart, Alfred Gelder Streetclosed on Friday 4th January. I haven’t been ableto find out what the long term plan for the pub is.This is such a beautiful building and stunningbar, it’s a real shame someone cannot make ago of it. However licensee Sue Perkins also runsThe Whittington and Cat and has had a handpump installed there. They will be selling beersfrom Wold Top Brewery

Pubs which don’t seem to be able to make a goof selling cask ales and are reported as havingno cask on the bar when last visited are TheSandringham, The Wheelhouse and Raynors. If anyone knows of any others or indeed if anypubs have started selling cask where none waspreviously available, please inform us.

Pubs which have closed since my last report are:The Fishbowl, Parkers and Masters Bar. TheGeorge, on the corner of Walton Street/SpringBank West has been bought at auction but aplanning application to turn it into a takeaway hasbeen submitted.

Keep me informed [email protected] of any Hull pub newsand I will report it on all our social media sitesand mailing lists.

The triton inn

Owners of a popular country pub, Paul and AnneRusling have been devastated by a fire that hasseen their new refurbishment work go up insmoke.

An electrical fault at The Triton Inn may be toblame for a blaze at the pub in Brantingham.Thepub was closed for refurbishment when the blazebroke out in the restaurant, causing fire andsmoke damage no one was in the pub when thefire broke out.

The back of house areas such as kitchens, stores, cellar and the private livingaccommodation are OK, thanks to fire doors, but

front-of-house is just blackened with smoke andsoot damage

Paul and Anne have now started redecoratingthe pub,but they are now counting the cost of fireand are unable to say when they will be able toreopen.

The Triton Inn has been their life for sixyears."We took it from being closed in 2006 andrebuilt it internally from the floor up,"So it's veryclose to our hearts and something we take greatpride in."

"We personally chose and bought all the furnitureand fittings and only earlier in the week,Anne hadbeen painting the doors".

Article courtesy of Hull Daily Mail.

After we rang the pub in early February, Paul hasconfirmed that they will be closed for at least 2months, check our website for any update.

EAST YORKSHIRE PUB NEWS by Pete Mason & mark bainton

To start this report, I would like to offer ourcongratulations to Phil and Avril Lowe. Threeyears after taking over as tenants of theShakespeare Inn, Hedon, they have increasedthe quality of the ale and the atmosphere (bothliterally and figuratively) and have now received anational award from Punch Taverns for excellentservice standards. The awards were judged byCask Marque and involved checking the beerline cleaning standards, service standards andcellar quality.

The Bay Horse, Arnold, re-opened at the end ofOctober 2012. The pub was given a verysympathetic refurbishment by the new owners, tothe tune of £250,000. There are three handpumps dispensing John Smith's Cask, MorlandOld Speckled Hen and Timothy Taylor'sLandlord.

John Robinson has been the tenant of theTravellers Rest, Long Riston, for just over ayear. He is selling Timothy Taylor's Landlord,Wold Top Wold Gold together with a changingguest ale.

After being under a selection of temporarymanagers, the Sun Inn, Skirlaugh, was takenover by a new tenant in early November.Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get thereduring opening hours to get more details, sowatch this space for the next edition.

The Dacre Arms, Brandesburton, is sellingTheakston's Old Peculier, John Smith's Caskand Black Sheep Bitter together with a regularlychanging guest ale.

The Black Swan, also in Brandesburton, sellsMansfield Cask, Marston's Pedigree and achanging cask ale from the Marston's portfolio.

Withernsea Golf Club is selling Black SheepBitter and there are plans to install another handpump in the spring.

Golden Sands Chalet Park is selling HookNorton Hooky Bitter in the Clubhouse (open tonon-residents).

The Ship Inn, Keyingham, is selling a genuineguest ale – a beer from Leeds Brewery was due

on the last time I called in.

Barbara and Tony Ross have taken over aslicensees of the Constable Arms, Sproatley. This is their first pub, and we wish them everysuccess.

Maggie Clarke finally took over as licensee of theRailway Hotel, Cottingham, on 9th December. She has been the manager there since leavingthe Constable Arms, Sproatley, in 2011. Beforethat Maggie was the popular licensee in the KingWilliam IV in Cottingham.

John Martin, took over as manager of theVictoria, Victoria Road, Beverley, in the middleof November. The Victoria, a Marston’s Heritagepub, sell Marston's Pedigree and a guest beerfrom the Marston's range. John was previouslythe manager of Greene King's Sherwood Manorin Nottingham, and has prior experience withYates' chain of pubs.

Report by Pete Mason

Triton Inn, Brantingham has had a fire whichhas caused extensive damage to the front part ofthe pub and at present the pub is temporarilyclosed. This is a shame as Paul and Anne hadjust put a third hand pull on dispensing WoldTop, Headland Red, see full story on previouspage.

Crown and Anchor at Tickton, just outsideBeverley, has a new landlady, she has a lot ofplans for the place and hopes Marston's will backher all the way.

Monks Walk,Highgate in Beverley is now beingconverted to a French restaurant.

Carpenters Arms in Market Weighton havehad a 'Meet the Brewer Night’ on the 31stJanuary and are planning similar events in thefuture. The guest brewer for the first night wasthe local brewery, Brass Castle.

14 POTY AWARD TRIP TOWNS AND VILLAGES BY ANGELA CAWTE

Once a year I have the very enjoyable duty topresent Pub of the Year Certificates to publicans. They have achieved the best standards whenvisited by our volunteers who assess which pubprovides the best overall experience. I haveknown some of these licensees longer thanothers, but the thing I enjoy most is theconsistency of the pleasure in the voices of thewinners when I telephone them with the newsthey have won.

Similarly, I also organise the Presentation Trip, for 2012 the presentations to the winner andrunners up in the Town and Village categorywere made on Sunday 3 February. As is usualwe meet at Hull Truck Theatre in Ferenswaywhere our coach picks us up. Members luckyenough to live on our route out of town avoid thevery early start that some dedicated membershave as they get picked up from bus stops on theway.

The longest leg of the trip was the first to theMarine Bar on North Marine Drive, Bridlington, and our only sea view of the day. The MarineBar is the runner up in the town category; thispub, a family run concern is part of the ExpanseHotel that has been open for more than 70 years,it has a separate identity and wonderfullyrelaxing atmosphere. The bar has been aregular entry in the Good Beer Guide for anumber of years and proudly promotes thisachievement.

I presented the certificate (above) to Natasha,Paul and Mac. My only regret is when we visit onthese trips we always seem to have to leave toosoon. They have 3 regular beers and vary theguests depending on the time of year, our party

was more than pleased with what we had tochose from.

(Members enjoying the hospitality at Marine Bar)

From Bridlington we travelled to Goodmanhamand the Goodmanham Arms, which under the

stewardship of Vito and Abbie Logozzi (above)has retained its status of the Village Pub of theYear.

The pub has many charming features, particularly the open fires that were appreciatedby us all. Abbie has also resumed brewing usinga brewing plant left by a previous licensee so wewere spoilt for choice from a varied range of alesfrom the in-house All Hallows Brewery, nationaland local independent breweries. Although thevillage of Goodmanham is no longer servedregularly by public transport it is well worth theeffort to visit. Abbie and Vito have achievedgreat things by making a village pub the hub ofits community again and when so many villagesare losing their pubs it is particularly pleasing toexperience the opposite.

The winner of Town Pub of the Year was next inBeverley and the Green Dragon, a Nicholson’sPub, part of the Mitchells and Butler Group. Thepub has been run for many years by husbandand wife team Glyn and Alan Clarke (below).

Glyn is dedicated to the maintenance of her ownvery high standards, and has previously referredto the ale casks as her ‘babies’ when talking tome. She is also very proud of the meals sheserves, and I had to arrange the presentationcarefully, mindful that if our group of 26 hadarrived earlier there would have been no roomfor us in the pub! I was given the responsibly ofserving our group from a range of seven alesincluding a Hop Studio beer ordered in to markthe occasion, but I can confirm the bar staff havenothing to worry about!

As with the other 2 pubs, we reluctantly had toleave to make the final presentation to MaggieClark (below), the licensee of the Railway in

Cottingham, runner-up in the Village category.

Maggie has been part of the community in thevillage for some time and I know of severalbranch members who were more than happywhen she returned to running a pub inCottingham, after a break of 2 years. Maggiealso had a selection of 7 real ales to choose fromand 2 real ciders. The pub is tied to Enterpriseand was substantially re-furbished when Maggietook over.

All the members enjoyed the range of alesavailable to us on the day and the welcomes wereceived. They are all different yet consistent inthe quality and choices they offer. It is sosatisfying that we are able as a CAMRA branchto recognise 4 very different pubs overall as ourbest of the best (as well as the 2 Hull awardwinners).

We will start to visit as many recommended pubsas we can. to consider the pubs for the nextGood Beer Guide in May. We will make thesetrips during the second weekend in the month. Ifyou like the idea of visiting somewhere differentor perhaps somewhere you may consider to beinconvenient, why not come on a survey trip ortwo? We publish details on the branch websitewww.hullcamra.org.uk if you are interested.

Please also remember that if you consider yourfavourite worthy you need to tell us otherwise wemay not know. As much as it might sound like agood idea to visit every pub, its actually quitedifficult, even if it is enjoyable trying !

On behalf of myself and the committee I wouldlike to thank all the members who do come onthe trips and then vote for the Good Beer Guide, and then those who volunteer their time to judgethe Pub of Year.

I also wish to thank all the publicans who work sohard to give us the real ale enthusiasts goodpubs to drink good beer in! Especially those whoextended their hospitality to us on the trips wemake.Angela Cawte - Chairperson

CAMRA welcomes Government plans for new“fair dealing” provision to end unfair practices inpub industry

The Government has announced action on unfairlarge pub company leases to safeguard thefuture of many thousands of community pubs. This announcement is the culmination of years ofcampaigning by CAMRA and over 7600 peoplehave lobbied their MP in the past year alone.

Supporting CAMRA's campaign, BusinessSecretary Vince Cable said:

“There is some real hardship in the pubs sector, with many pubs going to the wall as publicansstruggling to survive on tiny margins. Some ofthis is due to pubcos exploiting and squeezingtheir publicans by unfair practices and a focus onshort-term profits. Four Select Committeereviews since 2004 have highlighted theseproblems.... A change in the law is now neededto shift behaviour."

CAMRA Chief Executive, Mike Benner said:

“Over 3,500 tied public houses have been lostsince the start of 2009. Many of these will havebeen lost as a result of excessive rents and bybeing forced to buy beer at up to 50% abovemarket rates. The proposal for a “fair dealing”provision will allow publicans tied to large pubcompanies to challenge these high prices whichmeans fewer valued pubs will be forced to closetheir doors.”

“CAMRA fully endorses the Government’s wishto ensure that tied publicans are no worse offthan free of tie publicans. Research shows that46% of tied publicans earn less than £15,000 peryear in contrast to 22% of free of tie publicans.Guest beer and free of tie options offered by pubcompanies with more than 500 pubs, longadvocated by CAMRA, would be astraightforward means of levelling up the playingfield."

Members of the Scottish Parliament, CAMRAvolunteers, and brewers joined together in thewonderful setting of Holyrood to raise a toast tocelebrate the Scottish beer industry and pushforward our campaigns to save the pub.

Real ale was enjoyed from Stewart Brewing,Fyne Ales and the ever popular Bitter & Twisted(4.2% ABV) from Harviestoun.

There are now 57 breweries in Scotland. Thisdiverse booming industry deserves greaterrecognition from the Government and CAMRAbelieves it should move towards the same statusand national identity enjoyed by the whiskyscene.

Pubs however, in line with the rest of the UK, arestruggling and Scotland has suffered a net lossof 110 pubs in the last year alone.

CAMRA is campaigning for Scotland to followWestminster's lead and appoint a Minister withresponsibilty for pubs - someone to speak up forthis unique British institution and provide a focuspoint for the diverse pressures contributing to thedecline.

(Pictured above are Scottish Labour Party LeaderJohann Lamont with Lindsay Grant and Fyne Alesfounder Tuggy Delap)

A lot of support was shown from MSPs and theScottish Labour Party Leader Johann Lamont forour campaigns and we are hopeful this marks thestart to a great year for the fortunes of ourcommunity pubs

CAMRA Pomona Award 2012The Pomona Award is named after the RomanGoddess of apples, and is presented duringOctober: CAMRA's Cider and Perry Month.

Much consideration and deliberation goes intoeach entrant and it must be noted that thePomona Award is not automatically awardedannually as it may be decided, after longdiscussion that no presentation will be made. Inessence the Pomona Award is presented byCAMRA to the person, people, place or thingwho has done the most to promote real cider orperry over the previous 12 months or for ongoingwork to promote cider and perry.

CAMRA’s Cider and Perry Committee receivedentries for the Pomona Award from across theUK throughout the year, and it is individuals suchas Dr Lea who have been vitally important to therecent growth of the cider industry not only inBritain but also around the world by showing

fantastic support for new producers when startingout in the business of commercial cider making.

Dr Lea’s career started at the Long AshtonResearch Centre, near Bristol, and fast forwardto the present day, he remains one of the leadingauthorities in the science behind cider and perrymaking.

His website (www.cider.org.uk) and book “CraftCider Making” were and continue to be afabulous resource and inspiration to ciderproducers. Packed with a wealth of practicalexperience and understanding they includedetails about equipment, techniques, how toovercome problems and much more.

Andrea Briers, Chairman of CAMRA’s Cider andPerry Committee, said:

‘I am delighted to be able to recognise Andrew Lea's

work within the cider industry by presenting him with

our Pomona Award. His unwavering support and help

About 15 local CAMRA members did exactly that and after about 90 minutes of Morris dancing, frostbite and cider we took a warming trip around local pubs in and around Louth – including theexcellent Gas Lamp Lounge – the brewery tap for Fulstow brewery. Same time next year!

It was one of those sunny evenings as thesummer peaks and turns to autumn. Do youremember the sun? That hot, yellow thing in thesky? Our intrepid crew was embarking onanother survey trip, to the wilds of northernHolderness – ah, the sacrifices we have to makefor the cause.

The first stop was the Tiger Inn, in Beeford. Thelandlord, Roy Stamper, gave us a warm welcomeas we sampled the John Smith's Cask Ale andFuller’s London Pride in this pleasant countrypub half-way between Hull and Bridlington.

Suitably refreshed and fortified, we made ourway eastward to Skipsea on the coast, to samplethe delights of the Board Inn. Licensee GaryCarver was behind the bar, as most of the staffwere going on a hen night for the head barmaid.Gary has been at the pub for eighteen years as Iwrite this, and in the trade for nearly thirty eightyears. On offer that night was Jennings’Jogger's Tipple and Ringwood Three Sheets.

As we left, Phil Birtles got on the hen party'sminibus – they thought he was the stripper andhe had to leap off the bus in panic before he wasshanghaied for their trip to Bridlington.

We then turned south, towards Hornsea and theVictoria Hotel. On this particular evening, longstanding landlord Brian Thompson (who alsoruns the Black Bull in Atwick) was serving hisregular beer Black Sheep Bitter, together withtwo guest ales – Wadworth's Red & WhiteBrew and Nethergate Lightning.

A convenient two doors away is the Rose andCrown, where we received a cheery welcomefrom Matt Burns, who has been the license forseven years. On offer was Banks’ Dark Mild,Jennings’ Sneck Lifter and Marston'sPedigree.

The evening was still (relatively) young as weheaded southwest to the Wrygarth Inn on theoutskirts of Great Hatfield. The pub was failingwhen it was spotted by Ray and SandraThompson who were on the lookout for a freshchallenge after six years at the Silkstone GolfClub (near Barnsley). As well as serving

Yorkshire beer – York Red Hot night we visited– they have also incorporated a village shop intothe pub, as well as a restaurant and conferencecentre.

As the evening light faded, we headed off to ourlast port of call – the delightful Blue Bell Inn, aquintessential country pub in New Ellerby. TheBlue Bell has been run by Dave and ShirleyDiamond for twenty years (the anniversary waslast June). The many connecting spaces werefull as it was Dave's 62nd birthday the day before. As well as the regular Tetley Bitter, we wereable to sample Sharpe's Doom Bar, DunscarBridge Wicketkeeper and Wedding Anvil plusCross Bay Sand Pilot, which came on whilst wewere there.

All in all a very enjoyable night out in sometypical country (and town) pubs.

30 Follow The Tigers on the Amber Trail

In conjunction with our friends at Hull City Official Supporters Club, we are lookingat the last few away fixtures for City as they chase promotion from the Championship.

Saturday 9th February v Brighton & Hove Albion - 5.20pmThe Lord Nelson (36 Trafalgar Street, BN1 4ED), is conveniently located for the station and busroute to the new Stadium. This pub serves the entire range of Harveys beers and Thatchers cider. Also worth a mention is the Evening Star (55-56 Surrey Street, BN1 3PB) which was the originalhome to the Dark Star Brewery, whose brews are all available here, along with many beers fromother micro breweries. Draught cider/perries also available.

Saturday 23rd February v Bolton Wanderers - 3.00pmA newcomer to our Amber Trail guide, Bolton has 9 pubs in this year’s Good Beer Guide. Thenearest GBG pub to the ground being Bob’s Smithy Inn (1448 Chorley Old Road, BL1 7PX), anintimate stone built pub on the edge of the moors, the pub is some 200 years old and is named aftera local smithy. This is a genuine free house offering guest beers from independent breweries, it alsohas its own restaurant.

Saturday 5th March v Crystal Palace - 3.00pmDepending which way you get to Crystal Palace ground there are two-railway stations close by. AtSouth Norwood you have a choice of a Wetherspoons, The William Stanley (7/8 High Street, SE256EP), or The Alliance (91 High Street, SE25 6EA). At Thornton Heath you have anotherWetherspoons pub Flora Sandes (2/4 Ambassador Houses, Brigstock Road, CR7 7JG) and theRailway Telegraph (19 Brigstock Road, CR7 7JJ), which is a glorious throwback to better days, agenerously-sized and attractive Young’s pub close to the railway station with a central bar serving alarge saloon and a smaller snug.

Wednesday 11th March v Burnley - 7.45pmBridge Bier Huis, (2 Bank Parade, BB11 1UH,) is a large open plan free house, serving 4 guestbeers as well as cider and perry. A regular CAMRA award winner. The Talbot Hotel (65 ChurchStreet, BB11 2RS) is also a popular venue, and has recently been refurbished, it dates back to the1800’s, two guest beers are normally on offer as well as 6 regular ales.

Saturday 30th March v Huddersfield Town - 12.30pmAnother new entry to our Amber Trail guide, Huddersfield offers us 8 GBG pubs including in the towncentre closest to the ground; King's Head (St George’s Square, HD1 1JF), this pub serves up to 10real ales and ciders at competitive prices, so it can get busy, but well worth a look. The Sportsman(1 St John's Road, HD1 5AY) is a CAMRA Conservation Pub, and has its own on site brewery.CAMRA local Pub of the year 2012.

Saturday 13th April v Ipswich Town - 3.00pmSeven pubs are entered into the GBG for 2013 in Ipswich and one of the best is theArboretum, (43 High Street, IP1 3QL), which has a single bar and a restaurant upstairs whichspecialises in locally sourced freshly prepared food. Beer from local small brewers including GreenJack and St Peter’s are available

Tuesday 16th April v Wolverhampton Wanderers - 7.45pmMolineux suffers in so far as there are no designated away fans pub - so you are best trying the towncentre pubs.

Saturday 27th April v Barnsley - 3.00pmLast away game of the season, so where better to celebrate promotion than at the home of the worldfamous Barnsley Bitter, now brewed by Acorn brewery, which runs the Old No7 (S70 2PX), which isa very popular real ale pub and offers at least 8 real ales and ciders.

REAL ALE v SMOOTH

What is Real Ale?Real Ale is a living beer. It continues to fermentand develop its full flavour in the cask.

Real Ale is brewed from traditional ingredients, malt, hops, water and yeast matured bysecondary fermentation in the container fromwhich it is dispensed, and served without theextraneous use of carbon dioxide or nitrogen viahand pumps.

Real Ale is also called cask beer or caskconditioned.

Examples of traditional handpumps

What are ‘Smooth’ beers?Smooth beers are brewed in much the same wayas real ale but eventually the natural yeast iskilled and processed to give longer shelf life.

The dead beer is then resurrected by means ofchemicals and served chilled by gas pressurethrough fonts. Smooth beer sales are also knownas nitro-keg beer.

Thebrewery is mainly supplying to the localrestaurants, clubs, pubs and bars .The TrueNorth beer has been tweaked slightly and is now4.1% abv. A Christmas seasonal ale wasproduced, Old Ebenazer. A very good dark beer, slightly spiced with fruit and hint of rumflavouring.

Guy has started brewery tours and has startededucating us with 'Meet the Brewer' evenings.More of a social informal chat in the way yourbeer is produced than someone lecturing you ina classroom. Get down and go and have a lookthe next time you see one advertised.

Wold TopGill and Tom Mellor of Wold TopBrewery, Hunmanby Grangenear Wold Newton, are celebrating their globalgrowth in the export of their ales. Not just contentwith being a big hit here in East Yorkshire andfurther a field, they've taken Italy, Ireland,Sweden, Norway and now Canada on and doingvery well at it. With almost 100,000 bottles goingabroad last year with Italy taking the fair share ofthem, it’s the wide variety that Wold Topproduces which seems to take them fromstrength to strength.

I/we wonder if they have a vacancy for a breweryrep?

In the eighteen months since brewingcommenced, Richard has brewed onaverage 3 brews per month.

The ‘1st Duke’ 3.7% is the best selling bitter andhas been a permanent fixture on the bar for 12months. In the last 4 months Richard has alsobrewed the following beers:‘Minister’ 4.5% pale gold‘Commander in Chief’ 5.4% rich golden‘Prime minister’ 4.8% blonde‘Oporto’ 5.1% very dark‘Kitty’ 4.2% very paleAlong with some of our regular beers ‘1st Duke’and ‘Beau Douro’ and a couple of specials‘Mysore Rocket’ and ‘Leipzig’.

The new beer ‘Oporto’ sold so well in the puband in pubs in Newcastle, Dewsbury and Yorkthat he has brewed it again by request. Most recently Richard has brewed 2 new beers,a chestnut coloured beer 4.2% and an Ambercoloured beer 4.4%. A decision to start callingour ‘one off’ beers by the name ‘Wellesley’sSoldiers’ until we decide if they should join thearmy of beers we intend to brew on a regularbasis i.e., ‘1st Duke’, ‘Beau Douro’, ‘Statesman’etc and our special seasonal beers. Thereforethe amber 4.4% is called ‘Thomas’ and thechestnut beer 4.2% is called ‘George’.

Great NewsomeSleck Dust has taken a silver awardat the prestigious Society ofIndependent Brewers (SIBA) , NorthRegion Beer Competition held inManchester.

Elland Brewery, 1872 Porter, at 6.5 per centABV, was recently crowned CAMRA's SupremeChampion Winter Beer of Britain 2013 at theNational Winter Ales Festival at the SheridanSuite, Manchester. In praising the outstanding quality of thechampion he said: “Porters should not beregarded as endangered beers, they are beersfor today’s discerning drinkers. And on a coldday, 1872 Porter is a perfect winter warmingbeer. Elland Brewery 1872 Porter is a fineexample of a modern day interpretation of one ofthis country’s classic beer styles. East Yorkshire Hops - Yes Indeed by david litten

However unlikely it may seem that growing hops

commercially in East Yorkshire is, it is true. What

they can do in the West Country and Kent,

determined folk from Yorkshire can match.

The determined man in question is Matthew Hall

on right of this picture, having a beer with Mark

Storey from Big River Brewery.

I met him recently, quite by chance at a talk and

tasting session during the Green Hop mini beer

festival hosted by Ossett brewery at the Hop in

Sheffield. One of the beers we tasted was Big

River Hop3, a 2.8% ABV beer described in the

tasting notes as “A light bitter hopped with

Progress, East Kent Goldings and Northdown

hops, all grown locally in East Yorkshire in the

Northernmost hop yard in the country.” I was

eager to try this beer as I am familiar with Mark

Storey’s excellent beers, produced twelve miles

to the West of Hull in Brough. Discovering that

the hops used were from Elloughton, the

neighbouring village was absolutely amazing and

required further investigation.

The hop project began with Matthew’s hobby

home brewing, which gradually grew into an

obsession. Some land was purchased from

Yorkshire Water with the intention of building but

after some research in to land usage it was

realised that the land was more suitable for

farming due to the high soil quality.

He began to investigate the possibility of growing

hops but it soon became clear that there was no

information available for small scale / low-input

growers. All the material seemed to be written for

large producers or home growers of only one or

two plants. The former tended to make use of

very expensive machinery and buildings and

were high input and conventional in nature. The

latter, despite being entertaining, lacked in-depth

agronomic, drying and packaging information.

Nevertheless Matthew continued with his aim of

creating a small scale hop farm producing quality

local grown hops and hop rhizomes (root stocks)

via a five year plan to build up the hop field with

the approach “slower - smaller – local”

He began in February 2012 by planting four

varieties, 3 rhizomes of each of four varieties as

a test, the chosen varieties of hops being as

follows: -

Challenger - A high yielding dual purpose variety.

An excellent all round hop with good alpha and

aroma properties. As the main copper hop it

provides a refreshing, full bodied, rounded

bitterness which provides an excellent platform

for a late hop. As the late addition it can give a

very crisp, fruity character which has proved very

popular in many beers.

Goldings (East Kent rootstock) - A moderate to

high yielding traditional English aroma variety.

Valued for its smooth (almost sweet), delicate,

slightly spicy aroma that produces the classic

Goldings finish.

Northdown - A high yielding dual purpose

variety. An excellent all round hop in the dual

purpose bracket with good alpha and aroma

properties. Very popular used either on its own or

in conjunction with an aroma variety. A slightly

richer flavour than Challenger although quite

similar in many other ways.

Progress - A very variable yielding aroma variety

that was originally introduced as a replacement

for Fuggle and has very similar characteristics.

Slightly sweeter and with a slightly softer

bitterness it has excellent potential at both the

start and end of the boil.

The next step was to develop a small-scale

trellising system for the first year plants that

would make them easy to care for and check

without having to climb up a 16 foot traditional

trellis. The first four months involved the planning

and erection of a row of hedgerow trellis work

that would allow the plants to grow six feet

upwards then up to twenty feet horizontally.

The plants and beds had been covered in hay to

protect from frost and to maintain moisture

content. The first shoots made their way to the

surface with Challenger being the first in early

April and by July all were growing well.

At harvest time, the first year’s growth had been

very successful with a really good number of

hops formed. With the help of Big River Brewery

just up the road “Hop3”, a green hopped beer

using the fresh Yorkshire hops was made and

appeared at the Ossett Green Hop beer festival

in Sheffield.

The traditional trellis has been planted up in

November and due to the success of the test

plants it has been decided to plant Challenger

and Progress. The first proper hedgerow trellis

will be built this year with the aim to plant First

Gold and Sovereign in February 2013.

Research is being made into planting an older

variety that is no longer grown commercially to

produce something different. Many older British

hop varieties are being reintroduced to brewers

and ones that were once viewed as having an

unacceptable aroma years ago are now being

viewed to have an aroma to match hops from all

over the world, with characteristics of

marmalade, apricot, citrus, chocolate,

blackcurrant, pine, the list goes on.

Matthew has had great support and interest from

breweries across Yorkshire, with the excellent

local Big River Brewery headed by Mark Storey

taking the lead. He hopes to continue building on

support for the project over the next few seasons

and to supply Yorkshire hops to brewers to

create beers with a unique twist.

Beers from the wood – a thing of the past surely?Well no. Nowadays only about a dozenbreweries in Britain use wooden casks. Of these, some continue the tradition from the old daysincluding Yorkshire brewers Samuel Smith andT & R Theakston. Others are a part of a growingband of revivalists. These include two relativelynew Leeds breweries, Ridgeside (est. 2010) andKirkstall (est. 2011) and Five Towns fromWakefield (est. 2008).

The catalyst for this mini revolution is NeilMidgley at the Junction pub in the centre ofCastleford. Not only have he and partnerMaureen Shaw returned their pub to its formerglory by refurbishing it themselves but they havealso championed the use of wooden casks forreal ale. Following a successful “Yorkshire Beersfrom the Wood” festival featuring nine beers lastyear and seasonal awards from CAMRA and theSociety for the Preservation of Beers from theWood (SPBW) the Junction was recently votedWakefield CAMRA Pub of the Year.

2013 is the 50th Anniversary of SPBW and tocelebrate Neil is organizing a special beerfestival for Saturday 30 March. It will featureabout 20 different beers from the wood from localbreweries and, hopefully, some from furtherafield. Some will be served from the cellar byhand pump and others direct from the cask. It ishoped that a special beer can be brewed for theevent too. The pub will be open from 12.00 noonand is only 2 minutes walk from the railway andbus stations.

BREWING A BEER - AN AMBITION ACHIEVED BY DAVID LITTEN42

A few years ago, I discovered the high qualitybeers brewed by Tara and Elaine at MallinsonsBrewery in Huddersfield and became an instantfan. So much so that I asked them to make abeer for me at the 2010 HuddersfieldOktoberfest. They duly obliged and havingachieved that aim, I expressed a wish to seewhere it had been created. In fact, when I askedthey responded with “why don’t you come andbrew a beer?”

We agreed that it was a good idea and left it atthat. In 2012, following my early retirement, withthe brewery move to larger premises atLockwood imminent and the local CAMRAfestival on the horizon there seemed no moreappropriate a time.

At 8 a.m. on a crisp morning I arrived to achievemy dream. Brewsters. Elaine and Tara soonarrived in their company limousine and we set towork. With Tara getting stuck into cask cleaning,

Elaine took me under her wing and instructed meabout the brewing process. She expertlyexplained the steps, something that came easilydue to her experience as a top teacher. I wasgiven a few simple jobs such as weighing outand adding ingredients to the brew while she didall the hard stuff.

Once the mash was going, we dry hopped andracked into casks an earlier brew and did lots ofcleaning down to fill in the time until the time wasright to transfer our brew to a fermenter wherethe yeast was added. Like a fascinating

chemistry experiment of my youth, it soon tookhold and before we knew it the vessel had agiant foaming head. All we needed was a giantchocolate flake! I had become so engrossed in

the process that before I knew it, it was lateafternoon and we were in the office consideringwhich variety of hop to add later. I suggestedGalaxy and it was agreed as it was a type thatthey had not used before.

That was that. I said goodbye as I left and hopedthat I had not messed anything up.

At the festival I pulled the first pint, the Mayordrank it; it was the first beer to run off and wasvoted joint beer of the festival. I suspect itssuccess was due to their excellent brewing skillsrather than my amateur dabblings.
