Déjà vu in Wood Block Printing
Ameeshi Goenka PDP 301
Inspiration Going to MG Road for inspiration was our second day’s exercise after getting an introduction
to wood carving on the first day.
After going there and walking around MG road, Brigade road, Church street, St. Marks road,
Residency road and Magrath road, I noticed a lot of diversity in people, spaces, buildings and
sounds. Since I enjoy drinking beer, I decided to go to Pecos for lunch. After going there I
headed to Guzzler’s Inn and Le Rock. Seeing the pub culture, talking to the staff in these
places, listening closely to the songs, observing the interiors and making notes of the culture
inside the pubs inspired me to make my carvings on the Bangalore Pub Culture.
The lighting carving is made to represent the different levels of lighting in a pub and also how
dimly the entire space is lit.
The pub scenario depicts a woman (on the left in the print) in the form of a heart shape and
lips smoking a pipe, a cocktail apparatus in the centre with the human figures as stirrers and
a man (on the right in the print) from UK with a bow and a hat.
The John Lennon portrait was simply done because every bar played at least three of his songs.
I took a print out of his portrait because I can’t sketch portraits at all hence wanted to
carve the same.
