High drainage capacityDue to the constructional advan-tages of ductile iron the design of DRAINEX® is optimized for a better drainage performance. The wider slot cross-section ensures faster dewate-ring of traffic areas.

The P-TOP® DRAINEX® Philosophy

Ductile IronDuctile iron behaves elastically over a considerable stress range in both tension and compression. These attributes are caused by the spheroidal shaping of graphite in the material (see diagram). When exceedingly stressed, the material will be elastically

deformed but will not break. The spheroidal structure also provides a higher strength-to-weight ratio compared with the properties inherent with grey iron manufacture.

The benefits of ductile iron:l Higher resistance and durability;l Ergonomic handling caused by less weight;l Construction of safety items such as hinges or locking systems.

Locking systemThe covers/gratings of the P-TOP®/DRAINEX® series

automatically lock when closed due to the dual elastic spring bars on the underside of the cover.

They click into the frame, locking the manhole safely and firmly. To open the cover/grating,

the resistance of the spring bars is overcome by a light jerk.The locking systems ensures the child-safety regulations according to EN 124.

Clatter-freeAll manhole covers and gully gratings in the P-TOP® and DRAINEX® series are equipped with a

damping system. This system is based on long-lasting elastomer inserts in the contact surfaces which prevent direct metal contact between frame and cover or gully grating.

The spheroidal shape of graphite in ductile iron optimizes the distribution of force lines inbetween the material

The P-TOP® DRAINEX® Philosophy

Hinged covers/gratingsThe material characteristics of ductile cast iron enable the design of hinged manhole covers and gully gratings. The hinges considerably simplify working with manhole covers. The cover can be opened and closed easily and safely with minimum effort and without special tools. On closing the cover or the grating it is automatically aligned by an additional centring device in the frame. In the event of flooding, the hinge and centring device prevent the cover from being washed away and after flooding they ensure that the cover is lowered back into its secure original position.

Fixing in open positionWhen the cover/grating is opened, it remains fixed in a stable, secure up-right position at 100°. The integrated accidental closure prevention device at an opening angle of 80° prevents the in-advertent closing of the cover. To release the cover/grating, it is raised to an angle of 90° and lifted directly upwards.

P-TOP® Installation guidelines for covers and gratings

General fitting instructions:

l Cover/grating and frame should be checked for defects prior to installation (do not install defective or damaged parts).

l The loading limit of gratings and covers should be checked during the construction phase. Covers that are installed in trafficked areas should be installed with the hinge facing the direction of traffic (Fig. 1).

l Mahnole covers that are screwed or locked into the frame have to be assembled with tha frame before installation.

l Single- and multi-part manhole covers and gratings must be installed according to installation instructons EN 124 ÖNORM B 5110-1(2) (point 4.6).

l When installing on top of concrete shafts, covers and gratings must be set in a bed of mortar. All contact surfaces and seatings are to be cleaned. Concrete surfaces are to be moistened before installation. The setting mortar bed is to be provided over the complete inner surface and full height of the shaft. The depth of the mortar bed must be less than 20mm and not greater than 50mm at any point. (Fig. 2)

l Attention should be paid that there is an absolutely tight joint between the manhole cover and the shaft.

l The frame must lie with full contact on the complete frame surface.

l The cover or drainage grating is to be aligned with the shaft opening and road level (Fig. 3). Care should be taken that water can always drain off covers after installation.

l After placement of a cover or grating, an outer concrete casing is to be provided to enclose the shaft crown, compensation rings and frame on the outside. This should extend from the substructure up to the lower edge of the wear layer and prevents displacement (Fig. 4).

l Mounting foams, silicone pastes or similar materials are NOT suitable as a supporting material and therefore should NOT be used!

l The frames of backflow-proof covers are to be connected to the substructure with additional anchorage in order to withstand the required backflow loading.

l The necessary separation and expansion joints are to be provided prior to the rolling-in of the road surface. These are to be closed up with sealing strip prior to the rolling-in or afterwards with hot-poured bitumen.

l After the concrete has set, clean contact surfaces between cover and frame as well as any seals and screw connections should be cleaned. Opening handles and holes and joints between frame and cover are to be cleared of mortar and asphalt traces.

l Finally, lower the cover or grating into the frame. If necessary, seal or screw shut and check for a smooth, full fit (Fig. 5).

General maintenance instructions:

l For service and maintenance work, use only appropriate toos, i.e. lifting, operatind and screwing tools (Fig. A).

l All manhole covers and drainage gratings are to be opened and checked at least once a year.

l Manhole covers and drainage gratings must always be kept freely accessible (Fig. B).

l Before opening, the hazard area is to be closed off with appropriate barriers. To open the cover, the screw connection is to be released where necessary. The cover or drainage grating is to be unlocked and raised with appropriate care (Fig. C). Before climbing into the shaft (also with the hinged version) the cover is to be removed from the frame and placed securely to the side. Covers with a hinge are to be withdrawn from the frame in the 90° position.

l Carry out a visual check.

l Check locking mechanism or screw connection for ease of movement.Clean, grease and if damaged replace (Fig. D).

l Check and clean seal. If damaged, replace.

l Clean contact surfaces between cover/grating and frame. Insert cover, and where necessary, lock or tighten screw connections (Fig. E).

l Check for a smooth, full fit.

PLEASE NOTE:The closing or retention strength at spring bars can be adjusted by bending them slightly, for example with careful hammer blows.

WARNING:In closed state, always keep the cover locked or screwed shut.
