Land Art

Artists use a variety of materials in their work: water and oil paints, wood, glass, even rubbish.

But have you heard of artists who use nature to create art?

Land art or environmental art isn’t new. In fact, it is ancient. More than three thousand years

ago, on a hill in Oxfordshire, England, people created the Uffington White Horse – a 110-metre

figure of an enormous animal, possibly a horse or a dragon. They dug deep into the ground

and then filled up the holes with white chalk powder. Amazingly, this piece of land art still

exists today.

One of the most famous works of land art in modern times was created in the United States.

An American artist named Robert Smithson loved working with nature because everyone cansee this type of art, not only people who visit museums. In 1970, Smithson used rocks and

earth to create Spiral Jetty, a 460-metre-long spiral shape running from the land into the Great

Salt Lake in Utah. Over the years, the appearance of Spiral Jetty has changed because of the

changes in the weather and the tide of the lake. This is exactly what Smithson had planned to

demonstrate through his art – the power of nature. In fact, today Spiral Jetty has almost

disappeared from the Great Salt Lake.
