Welcome to Teachers First

Welcome to the Teachers First programme of Psychology courses for 2010/11. We offer a programme of one-day courses and conferences that support the teaching and learning of Psychology using active learning methods through paper-based and technological approaches.The courses are specifically designed for all teachers, experienced as well as NQTs, who wish to develop their subject knowledge through our specialist days and for those looking for new strategies to stimulate and engage their students. These workshops are also suitable for graduates who are completing their training in a school environment under the school-centred initial teacher training (SCITT) scheme. PGCE and final year students would also find our courses very helpful.

We look forward to meeting you on one of our courses.

Professor Simon Baron-Cohen (University of Cambridge, ARC)

Professor Baron-Cohen has been awarded prizes from the American Psychological Association, the British Association for the Advancement of Science and the British Psychological Society for his research into autism. His current research is testing the extreme male brain theory of autism at the neural, endocrine and genetic levels. He is an editor-in-chief of the online open access journal Molecular Autism.

Professor Jay Belsky (Birkbeck College)

Professor Jay Belsky is an internationally renowned expert on research related to early childhood and attachment, and the effects of day care, being a founding researcher on the NICHD Study of Child Care and Youth Development (US) and the National Evaluation of Sure Start (UK).

Tutor: Dr Simon Green

Simon is a highly experienced Chief Examiner for a major awarding body and has been involved in the development of the new specification. He is a senior lecturer in Psychology at Birkbeck College, London and has been involved in writing many student textbooks.

AQA (A) AS/A2 Psychology: Teachers new to delivering the Psychology course – taking stock

Course features

This course is aimed at teachers new to AQA A psychology and who are now in the middle of their first year. Most of the day will focus on the demands of the specification and the exam but there will also be time to share good classroom ideas and build confidence. There will be an opportunity to discuss strategies and the experience of the delegates during this important time.

This course will focus on the AQA (A) A2 specification and exam. As this is a new exam, the course will be suitable for all teachers – those who previously taught AQA (A), those new to AQA (A) as well as those new to teaching or new to teaching Psychology. The course has been specifically designed to look in detail at two of the popular options within G543 as part of the new A2 specification. The day aims to give valuable advice and imaginative ideas for delivery. It will recognise strategies for effective course management and motivational teaching, as well as preparing students for their examination. It is suitable for NQTs and all those teachers planning and resourcing for these topic areas.

Edexcel AS/A2 Psychology: Lessons from June 2010 and implications for teaching the

specification

Course features

This course has been specifically designed for those teaching the specification for the first time as well as those currently delivering the Edexcel specification. Emphasis will be placed on preparing students for the 2011 examinations by learning from the experiences and outcomes of the first series of AS and A2 examinations. The aim is to provide an opportunity to share good practice by focusing on practical classroom ideas and skills.Much of the specification remains the same but there are some alterations, additions and omissions which need to be understood by teachers. The most significant transformation concerns the manner in which it will be examined; this will have a significant impact on teaching strategies
