THE STAFFORDSHIRE GRADUATE

Page 9: Psychology, Sport and Exercise, School of - Undergraduate Guide

“The main reason I applied to study Psychology at Staffordshire University was because of its reputation. As the University has one of the top Psychology departments in the UK, I felt it would provide me with a great experience and foundation of Psychology. The facilities were also a huge factor, and I felt Staffordshire was the best option for me.

During my course, I was always able to ask questions and receive good advice. Regarding the lectures, each member of staff had a different approach on how to deliver the content of the course, and the supplementary seminars were very good for reinforcing lecture topics.

A number of the modules I studied assisted my career – for example, learning about human social and cognitive development. I have subsequently used many of the skills learnt from my degree in my work, including analytical thinking, problem solving and mathematical skills.

I now work within HR, where one of my roles involves dealing with high volume recruitment of staff. This role uses a combination of the skills I have developed throughout my working career, while my general approach towards working with people is always underpinned by the skills learnt from my Psychology degree.

Staffordshire University equips its students with great tools to choose a career they wish to pursue. The staff promote logical and analytical thinking and stretch students to go on to fulfil their potential.”

“I was so impressed by the quality of the teaching and the facilities at Staffordshire University that I put the University as both my first and second choice on the UCAS form.

As you’d expect, I visited a number of universities when looking for the right place to study my degree. But it was Staffordshire that really had the wow factor.

The lecturers weren’t just friendly and knowledgeable. They were genuinely interested in me, as well as my plans for the future.

The facilities were first-rate and it seemed as though there would also be a whole range of opportunities to help me succeed.

Throughout my time at Staffordshire University, the teaching and support have been superb. The lecturers know how to bring learning to life and are always available to help and advise.

I also feel that the University’s links with football clubs and the sport and exercise sector give a priceless insight into the skills that employers expect from graduates. In my case, this involved learning about the latest coaching and training methods – and using cutting-edge training software.

To boost my experience further, I became a Student Ambassador. I was also encouraged to join the Sports Makers Programme with Sport Across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent – an initiative to encourage more people to volunteer and get involved in sport. This led to me becoming a Multi-skills Training Coordinator – a great opportunity to enhance my CV and complete some voluntary work within sport.

When I graduate in summer 2013, I plan to study for a Masters degree in Youth and Community Work, then complete a PGCE so that I can teach at secondary level.”

Taking the BSc in PE and Youth Sport Coaching will prepare you for a career in teaching, professional coaching, health and fitness and sports development. Although a relatively new course, graduates on our similar awards have gained posts in areas such as athletics development, football coaching, teaching, lecturing and sports development.

If you were passionate about physical education at school or college, this course offers an opportunity to continue the practical and academic approach to degree level. Teaching and coaching skills initiated in Year 1 are practised and studied further in Years 2 and 3, where coaching and teaching placements are core. Throughout the course, the focus is on performance, teaching and coaching, supported by exploring the scientific and social aspects of sport. For example, topics covered include physical education, sport psychology, contemporary issues in sport coaching, inspiring learning, and sport development.
