A NEW GENUS AND SPECIES OF SALDIDAE FROMSOUTH AMERICA (HEMIPTERA)

BY CARL J. DRAKE AND LUDVIK HOBERLANDTIowa State College, Ames

Through the kindness of Dr. P. J. Darlington, Museum o2Comparative Zoology (Harvard), the writers have beenpermitted to study some undetermined semiaquatic Hemip-tera 2rom widely separated areas o the world. The presentpaper contains the description of a new genus and new spe-cies of shore bug ound on the beach of a small lake at anelevation of nearly 3,000 meters in the lofty Sierra Nevadade Santa Marta, Colombia, northern South America. Theunit o.f measure is such that the ormulas may be convertedinto millimeters by dividing by 80. The authors are indebt-ed to Mrs. R. E. Froeschner for the illustration of the ype.

Oiosalda, n. gen.Small, elongate-ovate, strongly convex above, remotely

indistinctly pitted, black, shining. Head long, slender, al-most porrect, slightly deflected, without distinct swellingsor callosities, even in 2ront. Eyes moderately large, distinct-ly excerted, moderately convergent anteriorly, deeplyroundly notched within just a little back of the middle, thehind margins slightly removed from anterior margin o.fpronotum. Ocelli tiny, not placed .on a raised area ortubercle, very widely separated, with the width of thespace between them about three times the diameter ofan ocellus, the space between an ocellus and an eye sub-equal to or feebly greater than the distance between theocelli. Prono.tum shallowly roundly emarginate behind,the collum not distinctly set-off, also no pronotal lobes;

central part of pronotum strongly swollen and very wide,strongly and uniformly convex or its entire length, theswollen area extending laterally so as to leave no explanatemargins, the lateral margins very narrow, carina-like,linear or its entire length. Scutellum slightly wider atbase than median length. Hemelytra of brachypterousorm strongly convex, decurved on the side so as to coverthe sides of the abdomen, strongly coriaceous with areasand veins coalesced and obliterated; membrane entirelycoriaceous with veins and cells indistinguishable, in-separable irom the corium. Rostrum long, reaching be-tween hind coxae. Legs moderately long, rather slender.Antennae rather long, quite slender; segment I moderatelyincrassate, stoutest; II longest, slender; III and IV slender,scarcely thicker than H. Macropterous orm unknown.Type o genus, Oiosalda caboti, n. sp.Superficially, Oiosalda resembles the genus Lampracan-

thia Reuter, but it is easily differentiated by the very slend-er antennae, smaller and widely separated ocelli, and the in-distinctly marked-.off collum. In Lampraca.nthia, the an-tennae are strongly swollen, ocelli larger and approximate,humeral angles acutely produced, and the entire dorsal sur-face sparsely clothed with long erect hairs. The same char-acters as noted above also distinguish the new genus romSalda Fabricius.

Oiosalda caboti, n. sp.Brachyptero.us orm" Deep black, smooth, pra.ctically

nude, very shining, the entire dorsal surface with only a iewscattered, very short, inconspicuous, almost fleck-like pubes-cence of a golden color.

Size" Length, 3.00 mm; width, 1.20 mm.Head" Width across eyes, 0.60 mm. median length, 1.20

ram. Interocular space practically subequal to the width ofan eye. Head black, feebly rugulose, without median longi-tudinal groove, without any callosities or strongly swollenareas, with two flavous spots on each side (one between anocellus and an eye and other arther forward and just back

o2 2ront margin of eyes); clypeus rather narrow not quitetwice as long as wide; labrum wide at base, roundly nar-rowed apically, shield-shaped, pointed at tip, almost twiceas long as basal width, the base a little wider than apex ofclypeus; apex of head, including labrum and corium, flavous.Rostrum rufo-2uscous, rather slender, extending betweenhind coxae. Head beneath black, clothed with short palehairs. Antennae brownish fuscous, pubescent.; ormula-,20; H, 44-48; IH, 30; V, 35.

Pronotum" Pronotum almost twice as wide at base asmedian length (80:42), median length and width at anteriorend nearly equal (42:45); humeral angles not produced orprominent; distinctly convex along its entire length, mar-gins extremely narrow, carina-like, of uniform width rombase to apex, very finely pitted. Scutellum almost flat, feeb-ly transversely impressed at middle, a little wider at basethan median length (50:40).

Hemelytra: Slightly wider at base than pronotum, de-curved downwards on sides so as to envelope abdomen, in-distinctly pitted, black, very shining, the outer marginsnarrowly turned outwards and there slightly embrowned;areas and veins all coalesced and not visible.

Legs: Moderately long, slender, brownish with emoramostly 2uscous, sparsely clothed with short pale hairs; ti-biae with usual dark brown spines. Acetabula, coxae andsternum black, the metasternum sometimes a little reddish.Abdomen beneath brown to black, clothed with short palehairs. Male parameres not removed from type. Last ven-ter of female, whitish behind.

Type (male) and allotype (female), south side of the Si-erra Nevada de Santa Marta, on shore of a small lake, 1941,Colombia, northern South America, collected by Dr. T. D..Cabot, in the Museum of Comparative Zoology (Harvard).Paratype, 1 male, in collection of C. J. Drake. Named inhonor of the collector, Dr. Cabot.

This peculiar and striking little shore bug is so differentrom other species that it was necessary to erect a newgenus for its reception; it is thus not readily confused withother described species.
