PSY 215 Extra Credit Options Worth up to 10 points depending on the quality of the paper (includes legibility). Due by: Last class (or sooner if you’d like) Size: minimum 2 pages and maximum 4 pages Extra Credit Option #1: Application/Reaction Paper—Video View and write an analysis of one of the following movies. Include three parts to your paper: 1. A brief summary of the movie. (worth 2 points) 2. An explanation of at least 3 human development psychological principles/theories (from text or class discussion) in the story line. (worth 5 points) 3. Your personal evaluation/critique. What did you learn? How does this compare with your life experience? How useful was this exercise? (worth 3 points) There are webpage video links from Discovery Health, Nova, PBS, etc. under “Articles of Interest” on my webpage. You can view any of these or you can view a video at the PCC library. See me if you have another suggestion for a movie to use that is not included on this list. Extra Credit Option #2: Application/Reaction Paper—Research Article Read an article from a research journal on a topic that you are interested in exploring further. It can be one of the articles on my webpage or it can be one that you looked up that our text references or that you stumbled upon in your own exploration. Use the same 3 parts to your paper as above. Two researchers in the area of developmental psychology that are local include: Mary Rothbart at the University of Oregon—primarily focuses on temperament Andrew Meltzoff at the University of Washington Possible topics that we’ve discussed already include the following:

� Nature vs. nurture � Infant development research and how they have come by their findings

and if they are possibly biased in their conclusions. Have these studies been replicated. If so, have they found consistent or differing results? What are these results?

� Development of the senses � Development of object permanence � Adjustment of the parents/family to the birth of the 1st child or addition of

another child � Why do some children skip crawling and go right to walking? How does

this happen? � Stem cell research � Swaddling � Language development—development for deaf or bilingual children?
