RESEARCH ARTICLES

A research article reports the results of original research, discusses its contribution to the body of knowledge in a given area, and is published in a peer-reviewed scholarly journal. Most research articles will include an abstract (summary) at the beginning of the article and a lengthy list of references at the end. Academic credentials of the authors are specified.

1) The abstract at the beginning of article usually summarizes the findings of the article. Copy the final sentence of the abstract in the article by McBride, Thomas, and Zimmerman.

2) Many studies in psychology involve human participants. In the Method section for Experiment 1 of this article, look for the section describing the participants. What is the number of total participants involved? (Hint: read the entire Participants section)

LOCATING REFERENCES CITED IN AN ARTICLE

Most researchers make a point of locating sources cited in key articles. This is a good way to become familiar with relevant sources. It is necessary to be able to interpret a citation because references can be for articles, books, sections of books, reports, and more.
