PILRIG St PAUL’S CHURCH MAY 2011 Dear Fellow-members, Easter is here and already you will have shared in the joy that is the high point in the year for all Christians – Christ is Risen! The tomb is empty! Every attempt to silence Jesus and to nip his Good News in the bud has failed miserably. The power of God’s love has tri-umphed over Roman authority and over Jewish religious blind-ness. The Messiah is here! His kingdom is established! A kingdom not of land or possessions but a spiritual kingdom where hearts which value the gifts of the Holy Spirit are welcome and know that they belong. The Stone has been rolled away – new life is here! On 22nd May the Church of Scotland is holding a special event in Princes Street Gardens. People from all over Scotland are coming to be part of it. Coming from every parish across the land they are coming to celebrate during the General Assembly - coming to let everyone know what Christianity and the Church of Scotland is all about, coming to show that there is life in the Church! Entitled “ Roll away the Stone” the event will include many different kinds of activities for all ages. It’s on a Sunday afternoon and it starts at 1.00 pm and runs till 6.00pm. Put the date in your diary and make sure you come along with your family and friends. It’ll be a great day!

It’s down to us, you and me, to show that there is life here too in Pilrig St Paul’s! Are you up for that? Christian Aid Week is from 15-21st May. This is a great chance to get in touch with the folk living in our parish and let them see that we care for those who are starving and poor and down trodden. Please do what you can to help! We are part of Leith Churches Forum and Leith Churches Together. Working together is the only way forward for all the churches. Of course, each church has its own special things it does best, but we can each draw strength and encouragement from each other and give a dynamic vision of the love of God to our community and showing powerfully that Christ is risen! The Annual Leith Festival Service organised by Leith Churches Forum is a great opportunity to show how lively we all are! This year it’s in South Leith Church on Pentecost Sunday 12th June 2011. See you there! Rejoice in all your living! Christ is risen! The real power in the world is the power of God’s love! May you and your loved ones know God’s love in your living John LEITH GALA DAY TEA TENT SATURDAY 11TH JUNE 2011 It is Pilrig St Paul’s turn this year to head up the organisation of the Tea Tent at the Gala on Leith Links. We will be looking for volunteers to serve the tea/coffee, clear ta-bles etc. for periods of one or two hours during the overall period of 10.00am till 5.00pm. Please let me know when you would be availa-ble to help as soon as possible. In addition we will require a significant supply of home baking to sell. You may be able to help in this regard if you are not able to be there on the day. All the help you can give will be most appreciated. Marlyn Tait

PILRIG CHORUS CONCERT

The newly formed Pilrig Chorus has got off to a great start with a group of around 40 singers working hard towards our concert of Mo-zart’s Coronation Mass and Vivaldi’s Gloria on Sunday 15th May at 4pm in Pilrig St Paul’s. We have members of PSP, South Leith, Leith St Andrews, North Leith, Broughton St Mary’s and St Philip’s at Joppa along with mem-bers of our local community who spotted our publicity and liked the sound of the new choir. Please come along and support our concert on Sunday 15th May and bring along friends and family to enjoy the sound of our new com-munity choir singing this joyful and beautiful music. Soloists Mairi Leach, Soo Ritchie, James Hutchinson and Richard Mein will be well worth hearing too! Admission is free, on a first come first served basis, and there will be an opportunity to make a donation towards the cost of music for our next concert – a Christmas event in December. Finally – if anyone can help with stewarding or organising interval refreshments, then please let me know. Many hands make light work! See you on the 15th – thanks for your support. Martin

“ROLL AWAY THE STONE”

PRINCES STREET GARDENS SUNDAY MAY 22 1.00-6.00PM. This event is shaping up to be a wonderful afternoon! Three stages and the main avenue running east-west in Princes Street Gardens will host an exciting variety of music, drama, recit-als, comedy, stories, puppets, interviews, participative workshops, choirs, contemporary bands, clowns, buskers - all celebrating the Christian message and exhibiting the wide range of the church’s work Entry is FREE.

Come along and bring your friends. Stones, representing the congre-gation and others church organisations – suitably and creatively la-belled - are asked for, to help build a cairn. Plastic bottles are also being looked for, to help in the building of a recycled church in the Gardens. More info available on the Roll Away the Stone website: http://www.rollawaythestone.org.uk

Christian Aid Week 15th -21st May 2011 Once again we shall be doing House to House collecting in our area during Christian Aid Week. Please offer to help even if you can only do a little. Monies collect-ed make such a tremendous difference in the lives of people in the developing world. We may be struggling ourselves, but it is nothing compared to the poverty faced by so many people in the world today. Jesus calls us to love our neighbour and Christian Aid offers us a practical way to answer that call.

Induction of New Minister to North Leith Parish Church

We, in the other Forum congregations, look forward to working with Alex McAspurren over the coming years. Rev John Tait welcomed Alex on behalf of all the churches in Leith Churches Together.
