Evening and welcome to the first game of the season against Rushall Olympic. In some ways it only seems yesterday that we had the dramas of the end of the last season. As much as we all enjoyed that day, it’s certainly something and a position we don't want to find ourselves in again this season. Tonight is clearly our first chance at gaining some points at Borderville and our home form does need to be improved, both for our fans and for the points on offer. The inconsistencies of last year really were our downfall and we've looked to address that in the post season. Richard Knight has returned and his experience will be invaluable, and bringing in the likes of Edy Appleton, David Bell and Andy Hall will add quality to the squad. We have also retained Greg Smith and Dan Clements to ensure we have forward options to compliment and take pressure off Ryan and Bully. We kicked off the season Saturday and it we looked a bit ring rusty. Credit to Nantwich, they looked a good footballing side and I expect a better season from them this year. Saying that, we defended too casually I thought and didn't look good enough in possession when the counter attack was on. The score line was slightly misleading as we were winning for the large portions of the game, and they did score twice in injury time, but there were still plenty of areas we could of improved on. It was frustrating getting to final minutes of game in a great position but surrendering it. I think we could argue about their first penalty but I'd rather not and stick to the fact we could have defended better as a side. I felt for Edy Appleton who got sent off when in really difficult situation and will now miss Whitby game. That blow is slightly softened with the news the skipper will be hopefully 100% by time Ashton arrive at the weekend. It is certainly important we pick up some points from the next two home fixtures, just as last season don't expect there to be any easy games in this league. I'm probably the same as most and expect Salford to win it, behind that it’s anyone's guess. I know there is strength in the teams both coming down and up into the Northern Premier as you would imagine. From all the players we thank you for your support and clearly the more fans we can get into Borderville the better. If we can get an atmosphere here anything close to what was at the end of the season it will make a big difference. That certainly has to go two ways though and it’s the players and managements job to give our fans something to applaud. COYD's !!! Staffy

I came away last Saturday from our opening fixture a little bit embarrassed if I'm being honest you can't concede 6 goals in any game if you want to be taken seriously in such a competitive league at a decent level. Also questions will have to be asked as to why we surrendered a two goal lead so easily after originally defending well for 40 minutes. We deserved nothing more than the good hiding we got as Nantwich at times made us look like school boys. Ball retention was nonexistent and balls coming into our box were coming in all so easy to unmarked men. The only lad that came away with some real credit was Knighty and that tells you a lot of how the game went. This is the first time we haven't managed to win our opening day fixture for a couple of seasons now so hopefully the roles are reversed and this means we'll have a better season than previous campaigns. It is only one game and we must learn and move on to try and get maximum points the following game and not dwell on this defeat. Tonight were at home and should make life a lot more difficult for the opposition than we did Saturday now the voodoo curse has been lifted with our first win on the new ground coming last game of the previous season. I hate to start the column with negatives because there were too many of them last season so I want to quickly move onto the positives the gaffer has strengthened the areas where we were weak last season and brought in some really classy players like David Bell and Hally and these are guys that can go and win you games if we play in the right way to their strengths. Last season we lacked a bit of creative play somebody to take the game away from the opposition and those guys have got all these qualities in abundance so I'm excited to see how they perform this year. This season we'll be looking to play a better brand of football something the fans can relate to and get behind the team. I think being down there last year the players were nervous which caused us to play some wayward long balls at times losing possession to easily but with a new season and new aspirations ahead with a much more relaxed approach I'm hoping we can play some good exciting football. Thanks for your support as always and thank heavens football is back because through the highs and lows let's be honest we can't live without it! Enjoy the season ahead! Skip

MEET OUR NEW CLUB CHEF

What can I say about me: I am a Stamford girl at heart having grown up in the area, working in local pubs, until I moved away to get some adventures in life. Living first in Cumbria, that increased my taste for Italian food - Spaghetti Carbonara, more lasagne and Dover Sole, not forgetting the big hills that I love to return to and walk in whenever possible. I then moved into the army but stayed in catering enjoying even more adventures in Germany. With cooking in tents, on boats, in the private homes of senior officers and the different levels of messes within the forces – at this time I developed a dislike for gravy, sauces yes gravy no. Family came along and it was then time for the adventures to take on a different form. We initially moved up from Uxbridge /London to the Bourne area, but it just wasn’t home so my family and I moved first to Ketton in 2000 and then to Easton-on-the Hill in 2004 were we have been since. Whilst living at Bourne I ran the catering aspect of a Northamptonshire Golf club catering for bar meals, society & match meals and club functions, due to the long hours and my young family I needed to take my career path in different direction, a local nursing home not an exciting adventure. So I moved into education catering easy hours and great holidays with two young children. For the last 13 years I have been a catering lecturer covering all aspects of catering and hospitality, and becoming an independent trainer/centre for Food Hygiene & Safety. Part of college life was annually working at events such as Royal Ascot and Cheltenham Gold Cup, to bring my catering skill level up to date. A new adventure began when outside of my teaching post I was asked to cook and dress a salmon for someone, this little act of goodwill has lead to catering for several events at Empingham Cricket Club, organising weddings (my favourite set in tepee’s in a paddock), a winter wonderland ball, dinner parties, luncheons and canapés for clients in their own home. Thankfully my military and working experience has meant I am able to adapt my skills and menu knowledge to the kitchen facilities I have to work in. The adventure took another turn recently after redundancy when I was asked by Paul Pepper and John Burrows to do a trial meal for the Burghley Rotary Club (who were looking for a new home) at the Borderville Sports Centre, I was asked to do a second dinner for them, then a third, fourth and now a few more dinners, prepare some buffets, cook some burgers and so the adventures continue. Commercial Manager Paul Pepper said, we are very pleased to welcome Claire as our new Club Chef, Claire brings with her a vast array of knowledge from her catering career, and this will enable us to provide a professional service for our Function Room whatever the occasion might be. Claire has also worked with Football Academies so she knows what nutrition sportsmen require after a match, we can expect some healthy menu’s for the lads post match meals next season. If you would like further information on hiring the Function Room and Catering requirements please initially contact Paul Pepper on 07849629991

Good Evening and welcome back after the off-season and pre-season. Tonight is the first home game back for the season, and as you are probably aware, we have already had our share of injuries so far. Over pre-season, Jordan Smith injured his groin in the Gainsborough game, and after a period of pain management, strengthening, flexibility work and a return to play plan. Jordan had a very hard session with me last Tuesday, trained on Thursday and he started in Saturday's game reporting no pain or discomfort which is great news. He is going to maintain performing some of the exercises as a preventative measure to ensure he stays fit. Nathan Fox also featured in the Gainsborough game, injuring structures behind the knee, and follows a similar plan to Jordan's but more specific to his injury. Both Nathan and Jordan were out for 22 days, with Nathan training on Thursday and featuring in Saturday's game, only to very unfortunately injure this time what we think is his medial knee ligament going by the assessment after he came off. Due to the laxity in this knee (how much it moves) he may be out for some time, and we will be looking to refer him on for a scan as soon as possible. Finally our captain Richard Jones has been out injured with an ankle injury, specifically a sprain of the anterior inferior tibiofibular ligament, which goes more across the front of the ankle high up. This is a more complex and time consuming injury, but rehabilitation although slow to begin with, has gone extremely well, and he should be returning within the next week at some point. So far he has been out for 28 days, but considering the injury, this is about normal, and we have been trying to make sure that this injury is dealt with properly so as to avoid reinjury. Hopefully we start where we left off at home last season, and you all enjoy tonight's game! Steven

as they secured automatic promotion into the Southern football league for the first time in their history. The 2007-08 campaign was an excellent one for the Pic’s in Southern league as Paul Holleran guided his charges to a promotion play-off position. Unfortunately, the dream of Premier division football was not to be realised as Rushall narrowly lost out to runners-up Leamington in the play-off semi final. May 2008 saw the Pics presented with a new challenge when in an incredible turn of events, the Football Association Leagues Committee met to decide on the allocation of clubs for Steps 1 to 4 of the National League System campaign – which resulted in the club being moved across the non-League pyramid into the Northern premier league first division for the 2008-09 campaign. The Pics debut campaign in the northern section of the non-League pyramid proved to be an extremely successful transition as they repeated the feat of twelve months earlier and reached the promotion play-off’s with another 5th place finish. Unfortunately, they suffered once more disappointment after this time losing by a single goal to runners-up Belper Town in the play-off semi final. However, Rushall did finish their campaign on a high note by claiming the Walsall senior cup for the first time in nine years as they grabbed a 2-1 victory against Tipton Town at the Banks’s Stadium. Dramatic developments towards the end of May 2009 saw manager Paul Holleran step down from his role due to a combination of work commitments and inevitable financial restructuring within the club as a result of the credit crunch and only days later was replaced by Neil Kitching. During the 2009-10 campaign the Pics led the first division table in both October and January, but they eventually faded out to a 12th place finish. Summer 2010 saw a further cut in the playing budget as senior player Nick Amos took on the role of player-assistant manager, while Ian Cooper returned to the fold to take up the position of player-coach. However, the backroom reshuffle paid immense dividends as Olympic finished in a best-ever 3rd place in the Evo-Stik League first division table and claim a place in the promotion play-off’s for the third time in four seasons. After accounting for Brigg Town 3-0 at Dales Lane in the semi-final they gained home advantage in the final, where a superb battling display from Rushall saw them surpass all expectations and claim fully deserved promotion to Step 3 for the very first time in their history following a 2-0 victory against Grantham Town. Rushall’s 2011-12 debut campaign in the Evo-Stik League Premier Division was nothing short of an outstanding success as they gamely battled away to an excellent 8th place finish, leaving many high-profile teams with far healthier budgets firmly in their wake – but were ultimately some 11 points shy of the promotion play-off zone. In May 2014, in a surprise move the Pics had already announced that Neil Kitching had opted to end his managerial reign after five successful years at the club by mutual consent and was quickly replaced as Manager by Richard Sneekes, the former Ajax, Bolton Wanderers and West Bromwich Albion midfield maestro and his experienced assistant Steve Hinks.

Research has discovered that the original Rushall Olympic Football Club was founded at least three years earlier than had previously been thought - with editions of local newspapers found to contain match reports about the Olympic dating back to the 1893-94 season. However, even earlier records have indicated that football in the village of Rushall was already being played on a regular basis at least 20 years prior to that time. As research continues, the early years of Rushall Olympic will slowly be uncovered, but it is known that a thriving club certainly existed just after the First World War, up until the mid-1930's. The team, then playing in old gold and black stripes, was a "good 'un", and won various honours along the way. After winning the Walsall & district amateur league second division in 1952-53, and later the first division in 1955-56, the club eventually gained promotion into the strong Staffordshire county league for the start of the 1956-57 season - and made an immediate impact by winning the second division title at the first attempt. Following promotion into the first division, the club later won three back to back championships between 1960 and 1963. The club continued to succeed in the Staffordshire league, but failed to emulate its unrivalled success of the 1950's and 60's. However in 1975, in order to take a giant step forward and gain a higher league status, the club decided to move three miles away to the Aston University sports ground. Unfortunately, football after many decades, had left the village - but it was soon to return. The help of Councillor Dick Arkell was sought to obtain the lease of some land in Daw End, Rushall, where trees had to be moved, holes dug, and some filled in, until the new Dales Lane ground was officially opened on Sunday 14th August 1977. The club were then accepted into the West Midlands league in 1978. The club made further progress during season 2002-03 as they went on to record their best ever alliance campaign, registering their highest ever number of victories and most points achieved by the club, as they finished as runners-up to Stourbridge. Disappointingly, their efforts both on and off the pitch were still not enough to attain their long term goal of southern league football when the Pic’s were denied a promotion place at the eleventh hour after a crucial vote went narrowly in favour of Yate Town. August 2003 saw the return of John Allen into the management hot-seat after the club decided it needed a change of direction and subsequently parted company with Kevin Hadley and his coaching staff. However, even working under such constraints he was still able to guide his charges to the 2003-04 Midland football alliance cup final, which eventually took place in August 2004, although his side were ultimately defeated 3-1 after extra time by Stratford Town. Indeed, after 7 seasons of trying “Mr Rushall” irrefutably delivered the club’s ultimate goal as he led his side to the 2004-05 Midland football alliance championship with 3-weeks to spare and by a commanding 7-point margin. Following an anxious 4-week wait the Football Association eventually decreed that Olympic’s dream had come true

Smoking Policy

A partial smoking ban is to be introduced at the Zeeco stadium for the coming season.

A motion was put forward at this years shareholders annual general meeting for a complete ban within the stadium. This was rejected by the shareholders at that meeting. The board of directors have decided to introduce a partial ban on smoking at the Zeeco in all areas between (and including) the main stand and the terrace stand. This ban will take immediate effect and includes the use of electronic smoking products. The ban will cover all matches held at the Zeeco stadium and comes into effect immediately. It is intended that the club will poll supporters in early 2016 to gauge opinion on whether this should be a permanent decision.

The EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's top flight got underway for the 2015-16 season on Saturday with Nantwich Town take top billing by beating Stamford AFC 6-3 at the Weaver Stadium.

It was a strange game that saw the visitors` race into a 2-0 lead with goals from Daniel Clements after 17 minutes and an Andy Hall penalty three minutes later. Josh Hancock reduced the deficit a minute before half-time and then Paul Hudson equalised eight minutes into the second period. But Gregg Smith restored the Daniels` lead in the 67th minute, only for Elliot Osborne to pull the Dabbers back on terms with another spot-kick four minutes later.

Sub Steve Jones gave Nantwich the lead for the first time nine minutes from time and then Liam Shotton made it a nap hand in the last minute of normal time. The drama wasn`t over yet as the home side were awarded the third penalty of the afternoon in injury-time and Osborne duly converted the spot-kick to make it 6-3.

Whitby Town made it a miserable long journey back to Worcestershire for new-look Stourbridge after condemning them to a 4-0 defeat at the Turnbull Ground.

Matty Waters gave the Seasiders` a great start with a sixth minute opener. Eight minutes after the break and Ross Gardner doubled Whitby`s lead and 11 minutes after that it was game over with Michael Roberts making it 3-0. A last-gasp James Brown effort put the icing on the cake for the hosts.

Two games, 13 goals, but there were none at Hurst Cross where Ashton United hosted Mickleover Sports, or at Moor Lane where fancied Salford City were held by Marine AFC in front of a good crowd of 518.

It was a bad start for new Ilkeston FC boss Gavin Strachan as his side lost 3-1 at the New Manor Ground to wily Tommy Lawson`s Skelmersdale United.

One of the Reds` many summer signings, loanee Marcus Harness, gave Strachan`s side an early sixth minute lead. And they held that lead until 11 minutes into the second period when Alan Burton equalised.

Two minutes later Danny Mitchley put Skem in front and the majority in the 505 crowd were then stunned when Burton grabbed his second seven minutes from time to put the game beyond Ilkeston`s reach.

Promoted Darlington 1883 were beaten 2-0 at Silverlands by Buxton in front of the day`s biggest crowd of 708.

Ashley Burbeary put the Bucks in front after 18 minutes and the Quakers were killed off by Liam Hardy two minutes into the second half.

Relegated Colwyn Bay and Hyde United could only manage one point between them on the opening day.

Bay were beaten 1-0 at The Grove by Halesowen Town – a Jordan Fagbola own goal in the 16th minute handing their hosts victory.

The Tigers led twice at Ewen Fields against Grantham Town in front of 509 before being pegged back to 2-2.

Ayrton Bevins put Hyde in front on the half-hour mark, only for Lindokuhle Ndlovu to pull the Gingerbreads level six minutes after half-time. Bevins restored the home side`s advantage just five minutes later but 10 minutes from time Ellis Humble earned Grantham a share of the spoils.

Blyth Spartans are another side fancied to do well this season and they started well, winning 1-0 at Kirkby Road against Barwell, courtesy of a goal from Stephen Turnbull with less than four minutes remaining.

There was even less time to go when Matlock Town recorded victory at Westfield Lane against Frickley Athletic.

Jameel Ible had broken the deadlock to give Frickley a 77th minute lead. Michael Harcourt levelled with four minutes of normal time remaining for what looked like a point-saver – until Joel Purkiss popped up with the Gladiators` injury-time winner.

Rushall Olympic were the day`s other winners, beating Ramsbottom United 2-0 at Dales Lane.

Kris Taylor scored the fastest goal of the day to give the Pics a third minute advantage. And two minutes after half-time, Alex Reid scored the second to win it for Richard Sneekes' side.

A crowd of 488 saw Workington AFC and promoted Sutton Coldfield Town share a 1-1 draw at Borough Park, Justin Richards giving the Royals a 34th minute lead that Scott Allison cancelled out 10 minutes into the second half.

Daniels Hit For Six In League Opener

The Daniels lost on the opening day of the season for the first time since 2010 as they were well beaten by a good Nantwich side. After having so many injuries, manager David Staff was able to recall Nathan Fox, Jordan Smith & Greg Smith to the squad following their respective lay-offs. The home side started brightly and tested keeper Richard Knight with a couple of shots that he saved well. Stamford took the lead against the run of play, after 17 minutes. Jon Challinor played an intelligent ball through to Dan Clements and his first time shot was parried by Terry Smith in the Nantwich goal. The ball only went as far as Nantwich right-back Josh Gordon and he could not prevent the ball hitting him and rolling into the net. The Daniels doubled their lead three minutes later when Clements was fouled inside the box and the referee pointed to the spot. Andy Hall stepped up to send the keeper the wrong way. Just after the half hour mark, Stamford were forced into an early change with Greg Smith replacing the injured Nathan Fox. A minute before the break, Nantwich found a way back into the game. Josh Hancock picked the ball up and his shot was across Knight in the Daniels goal to make it 2-1 at half time. In the second half, Nantwich continued to press and it was no surprise when they equalised through PJ Hudson who had only just come on as a substitute. With over 20 minutes remaining, the Daniels retook the lead. Andy Hall chased a backpass to the Nantwich keeper. His hurried clearance only found Greg Smith who hit his first time shot low across the keeper and into the far corner of the net. The lead last only four minutes as the home side were awarded a penalty after Steve Jones was adjudged to have been fouled. Elliot Osbourne stepped up and sent Knight the wrong way. With less than 10 minutes remaining, the home side took the lead for the first time in the game. Steve Jones heading home for them. The Daniels chased the game to try and find a way back into it and were punished twice more in injury time. First, debutant Edi Appleton was red carded for bringing down the player and giving away another penalty which was duly scored by Osbourne, then Liam Shotton finished the rout with a far post tap in.

A Thought for the new Season Welcome back! A new season is here and we are now well established in the Zeeco stadium at Borderville. Last season was a combination of highs and lows and saw a lot of change with the move. The end to the season was not for the faint hearted but we are in the same league and the new season now greets us with a new opportunity. We hear a lot about the psychology of sport these days and we all know, perhaps from our own experience, how our state of mind can affect the performance of any sportsman. Little wonder then that golfers get what is known as the ‘gips’ when they lose their composure putting. And it’s not always about effort either it is so easy to try too hard and lose rhythm in the process. The best at anything always make it look easy and the same is true of sport so a balance of relaxation and focus are as important as fitness and ability but they are not always enough. The correct attitude is paramount and in a team sport there is the need to be a good team player not just a virtuoso performer. But any team is not just about the players on the pitch or the squad, it’s about so much more, all the people behind the scenes we often don’t even hear of go into making a good and successful team. And not only way they do their jobs but their attitudes, too, can make a big difference to a team. And the same goes for us on the terraces; whether we are a lifelong and regular supporter or feel we are just at the margins as an occasional spectator supporting the club we all form part of that overall team and the way we provide that ‘support’ makes a difference. The way we are and the kind of hospitality we extend to our visitors and guests all goes to form what we might call the ‘culture’ of the club and that is important if we want to be a successful club. So, are we hopeful about the new season? We have every reason be hopeful and positive so let’s extend that hopefulness in our support to give real encouragement to the lads on the pitch. Let’s have some big hopes for this season and show that we have a positive outlook for a team that is going places. As a Christian, a fundamental of my faith is to be hopeful because my faith reminds me that I am part of a much bigger team which includes all of us and it is that connectedness with one another and with God that is a cause for much hope and joy. So I hope that in being part of this team you might just reflect on those other teams and communities of which you are a part and how we might all find a real sense of belonging and hope in our togetherness. With every blessing Rev Bob
