The skiing and snowboarding Buyer’sGuides are out on the newsstands, whichcan only mean one thing: we are closingin on a new sliding season. Fortunately,we still have a few months before weclick in or strap up. If you have not beenbuffing out the body this summer, youstill have some time to get in tip topshape for what is looking like a very busyseason.

The latest buzz in our division is certainlythe lack of H2B visas. I personally willmiss all of my international friends, butwelcome the opportunities that thischange opens up for all of us. We haveopenings for full time snowsport profes-sionals, which we may not have had inthe past. The dream of teaching skiing orsnowboarding is still very much alive andwell.

PSIA-RM-AASI is very excited about the

new and improved curriculum that isbeing developed for all of us. We arelooking to become a resource center forthe member schools and the membersalike. The first phase of the ProfessionalDevelopment Series (PDS) will provideall members new options and new direc-tions to explore, aside from the typicalcertification paths. There will be moredetails on this new program in other arti-cles in this newsletter, as well as on ourwebsite, www.psia-rm.org. Please checkit out for more information and to sign upfor any of the courses being offered thisseason.

Most of you probably watched theOlympics during the month of August. As you know, the athletes wait four yearsfor that grand stage to show their talentsand compete against others to earn thetop spot in the world. We have a similarevent that goes on every four years, the

National Team Tryouts. The selectedteam represents the country every fouryears at Interski. I am thrilled to take thisopportunity to honor the Rocky Moun-tain representatives and newly selectedmembers of the 2008-2012 NationalTeam. These wonderfully gifted athletesand educators have devoted an enor-mous amount of time to training andhoning their skills during the last fewyears with hopes of realizing their goal. Many of us have had the good fortune, and are certainly grateful to have skied orridden with them. We have been partic-ipants in their clinics and benefited fromtheir dedication to and knowledge ofteaching skiing or snowboarding. If theopportunity arises to attend a clinic orevent with one of them, sign up. You willbe thankful and look forward to the nexttime.

At YourServiceBy Dana ScronekYour…Executive Director

Seems like just yesterday I was headingout on the snow in my “in the boot” mintgreen stretch pants about to teach my firstlesson. I was 15 at the time and if youhad told me then that I would be workingfor one of the largest divisions of PSIA-AASI as the Executive Director I wouldnever have believed it. Why? Because Iwas going to be an examiner and RULEthe world!! Unfortunately no one told meyou have to be a really good skier to bean examiner nor did they tell me I wasless than stellar on skis. So since that did-n’t work out I decided to settle for this. Iam only kidding…note to yourself, I amusually kidding that’s what I do.

So what have we been doing all summerother then eating bonbons and floatingdown the river? We have been workinghard and are excited to announce thatthe RM Division is launching the NEWProfessional Development Series. It is aprogram designed to offer an additionalor alternative option to certification. Itsfocus is on education and job specifictraining. Your Snowsports School Direc-tors, the Board of Directors and the Com-mittees have spent years discussing theneed for a program like this. This year itcomes to fruition. Although JennyMacArthur (our new Education andTrain-ing Manager, welcome Jenny!) discussesthe program I can’t help but let you allknow how very excited I am about it. Asa past director and having presented clin-ics for a similar program in the east Iknow the potential it brings to everyonewho takes part.Your experiences with theclinics will make your job easier andmore fun, you will communicate betterwith your clients, build your return busi-ness and become an even better teacherbecause of understanding more in depthhow it all works. There is truly no longera dead end in your education as an in-structor…it only gets better from here!

For all you 5, 10 and 15 year members-this year, to honor your dedication andlongevity as a member of PSIA-RockyMountain-AASI, we will be sending youeach a Commemorative Rocky MountainPin. I would like to thank Billy Nowell,

who recently proposed this fantastic ideato the board and the Board of Directorsfor accepting the proposal. Billy will bereceiving his 10 year pin this fall, join mein congratulating him.

Shhh it’s a secret…a Secret Stash SpecialOrder clinic that is. New this year will beclinics made to order. Are you a resortthat does not have an Examiner or TA onstaff and you want to attain certification?Maybe there is someone on Ed Staff thatinspires you and you want to ski/ride withhim/her. Whatever your needs, you canget stuff from the secret stash. The cost, which includes everything, will be $350a day. This is not to be mistaken for aTraveling Clinic. Traveling clinics will stillbe available if you want one of our regu-lar offerings at your home area, i.e. if youwant to receive clinic credit and pay the$75 per day per person amount. All Trav-eling Clinic requests and Special OrderClinics need to come through yourSnowsports School Director/TrainingManager and can only be guaranteed ifdone so by Nov 15th.

The Curriculum Guide is almost done!Clare Browne, our new Events Coordina-tor (welcome aboard Clare!), has beenbusy putting together the event calendarfor the 2008-09 season. It should beavailable online by the end of September. Some changes that you may notice willbe that we have condensed the events soas to offer multidiscipline events at onelocation. The reason this was so impor-tant was because we want you to be ableto carpool and share lodging and ex-penses for events. Remember we are allsnow bums and none of us have moneyso we realize how taxing the events canbe on your wallet. You may also noticemore ITC’s then ever before. We offeredevery member school that wanted one ahome area ITC to cut down on your ex-penses while acquiring your most impor-tant certification.

I would like to thank John James, KarenFrei, Scott Anfang, Bobby Palm and BarbSzwebel for the incredible amount ofwork they put into the new AdaptiveSnowboard Guide. Even better news -Rocky Mountain has teamed up with Na-tional and several other divisions toco-write a national guide that will hope-fully be available in January. Until then, you can access the RM guide via thewebsite at www.psia-rm.orgIf you saw a dollar bill on the streetwould you pick it up? Then why wouldyou not take advantage of the manyscholarships, we have available? For

years and for different reasons, scholar-ships have been set up to fund the differ-ent needs of the membership. Enclosedyou will find an article by Travis Crookeabout his experience based on the JimRiley Scholarship he received. I knowTravis quite well and I know if he saw adollar, he’d pick it up and put it towardshis training. For more information on thescholarships check it out on our websitewww.psia-rm.org under member bene-fits.

I have to apologize as it was an oversightthat I failed to congratulate everyone whotried out for the National Team at Mam-moth Resort in April. Rocky Mountainwas well represented with 49 Alpine,Snowboard, and Nordic instructors at-tending. Although in my eyes they wereall successful, Bobby Murphy, Nick Her-rin, David Oliver and Jim Schanzenbakermade the Alpine team, CharlieMacArthur and Ross Matlock made theNordic team and Scott Anfang, Eric Rollsand Gregg Davis made the Snowboardteam. Congratulations guys!

Well that’s all folks but before I go, let mesay as I approach my one year anniver-sary, I would like to take a moment andthank everyone who contributes to thisdivision. Do you know the saying “ittakes a village to raise a child”? Havingbeen involved in an organization such asthis where the vision and direction inwhich we go is inspired by the hard workof a team of volunteers that is comprisedof our Board and Committees, I can re-late all to well to that saying. Because ofthis army of volunteers their passion andvision will guide this division into a newera. In the years to come you will see ourofferings of products move in a new di-rection. A direction that will provide youaccess to the tools you need to be bettercommunicators and educators. You willbe excited about and crave the learningprocess. You are PSIA-AASI and we arehere to serve you.

My Quest for TA thanks to the JimRiley ScholarshipBy Travis Crooke - Steamboat CO - Level 3 Trainers Accredited

The Jim Riley Memorial Scholarship is agrant offered through PSIA that is intendedto assist in the development of teaching cre-dentials of regional instructors. Last April,I was granted a portion of this grant, whichallowed me to be a candidate at the Train-ers Accreditation (TA) try-outs held inBreckenridge. The scholarship was the de-ciding factor that solidified my attendance, but I had been preparing for it from the mo-ment I earned my level III certification. Iwant to thank the Jim Riley Fund and PSIAfor their assistance and discuss the scholar-ship so others can capitalize on the fund. Iam also going to outline the path I took toprepare and succeed at this event so thatothers aspiring to this level can develop aplan as well.

Fortunately, the regional PSIA office is lo-cated in my resort town of Steamboat. Theyhave grown to recognize my face aroundthose parts because I generally pop in therea dozen or so times throughout the ski sea-son. Everybody has acted as an insightfulmentor when choosing events to attend andfor that, I am grateful. Many of them havebeen instructors, supervisors, and trainersin the ski industry, so they understand the fi-nancial strain that PSIA career growth canimpart upon a starving instructor such asmyself. While at the office one day, DanaScronek, our executive director, suggestedI apply for a scholarship. I did not evenknow these existed, and was elated to dis-cover I qualified for the Jim Riley Scholar-ship.

Jim Riley was a lawyer and fellow ski in-structor deeply involved in developing thePSIA-RM organization. He offered his legalexpertise to create the by-laws of the or-ganization and was a lifetime member ofPSIA. One thousand dollars is available an-nually through his grant and it is intendedto be used to assist in the costs of furtheringone’s education in the ski instruction in-dustry.

I discovered the scholarship in December, but I began my bid for TA much earlier. Infact, I completedmy alpine level III inApril of2006 and immediately set my sights on the

next stage of my development. The ’06 – ’07season was spent developing clinics for myresort and gaining experience leading clinicson various topics such as freeriding and rac-ing. I gave myself two years to prepare fortheTA exam because I understood that I hada lot to transform in my personality and ski-ing before I could confidently send candi-dates to exams.

There are two mandatory clinics one mustattend before going to TA. In addition, there are a few supplemental offerings. Ihighly recommend any preparatory optionsto which you have access. It helps fine-tune your strengths and alerts you of yourweaker areas. In addition, you establishrapport with your clinic leaders, which inall likelihood will be examiners at TA. Thisin turn reinforces your dedication to the or-ganization in their eyes.

Most of my days of this past season in-volved wedge Christies and pivot slips. Iwould not trade it for anything, but I alsodon’t look forward to doing it again any-time soon. There was a week and a half be-tween the time Steamboat closed and TA,so I packed my bags and moved to Breck-enridge for a week to learn my way aroundthe resort, train on the actual exam terrain, and subdue my social life so I could focuson my priorities. This last bit wasn’t easy asyou fellow ski instructors know, but well, Ihandled it somehow.

When exam day came, I was a lot lessstressed than expected. I knewmany of thecandidates from various events throughoutthe season, and many of the examiners hadalso run those events. We were assignedour presentation and clinic teaching topicsas we arrived. Then we booted up andwent skiing!

There is no way to conduct a truly objectiveski exam. It’s an inherent fault in any testprocess. To help with the draw back, the ex-aminers tried to rotate through stations andpresentations so a large audience was evalu-ating theworth of each candidate. The examlasted three days and two nights.

The first and third day comprised of evalu-ated ski maneuvers. TAs should be able todemonstrate any maneuver on a level I, II,or III exam, so most tasks at theTA exam in-corporate a blending of multiple skills toevaluate many aspects of a candidate in ashort period of time.

The second day of skiing entailed a full dayof clinic leading where candidates wereevaluated on their ability to effectively leada clinic that evokes noticeable change infellow instructors. At the same time, ex-aminers grade overall ski performance, demonstration techniques, cognitive focus, and professionalism. The second eveninginvolved an indoor MA evaluation of a toplevel skier. The third day ended with indoorpresentations of obscure ski topics. Theywere a pleasure to watch and extremely in-formative.

In the end, 11 candidates passed. Unlikeprevious years, an overall score was the de-termining factor, instead of a specific pass-ing score for each category. The ideabehind this was to supply resorts with train-ers that have specialties instead of trainersthat are pretty good in all areas. This way, trainers can shine in their area of expertiseand let other trainers that excel in otherskills round out exam candidates. This newsystem holds candidates to a higher overallstandard and encourages success in spe-cialties they can take back to home resorts.

I happened to be the last candidate to passthe exam. It’s been a long journey, but as Ihave discovered each time I expandmy un-derstanding, there is still so much to learnand do. I look forward to the future andworking with the PSIA organization more.Thank you PSIA and Jim Riley for the schol-arship and support. The Jim Riley scholar-ship is designed to help instructors succeedthat would otherwise be financially limited, and in my case, it did just that. Thank you.All of the scholarships PSIA offers can befound on-line at http://www.psia-rm.org/scholarships.php. They range fromcollege grants to ski instruction education.

Hi everybody, well the summer is pass-ing and it’s time to get ready for an ad-venturous, exciting winter. We hope youwere able to spend some time this sum-mer getting ready for some of the newthings that you will be hearing and ob-serving from some of your students. Hereare some questions for you. Anybodyknow who “Wall-E” is? What about thecharacters from “Kung Fu Panda”? Areyou up to speed on Hannah Montana?Who are these guys, the Jonas Bros?

Yes, we are an outdoor sport, howeverwe have the opportunity to take materialsprovided from various types of media and

Going along with this, we want tohelp you fill and understand how to useyour own “toolbox” this season by offer-ing the return of the RM Kid’s Academy. We recommend this event for anyone, from rookies to ski school trainers whoare looking to go beyond the norm in“filling their toolbox”. Use it to build thegreatest adventure that you can providefor your students.

Be on top of the introduction ofthe new PSIA Children’s Manual with anafternoon session led by a special guestspeaker. Training and Education UpdateJenny MacArthurPSIA-Rocky Mountain-AASI Education and Training Manager

Before I jump in too deep with the goings on in the training and education realm of RM, I’m going to take a moment to introduce myself.

My name is Jenny MacArthur. I’ve been based out of Aspen Snowmass for the past six years and have been involved in the snowsports in-dustry for more years than I care to admit! This passion of mine has taken me to 9 Snowsports Schools in 4 different countries in pursuit ofthe fluffy white stuff and I wouldn’t change it for the world.

Last April I found myself in Mammoth at NationalTryouts and while I didn’t make the cut, it was exciting to be on the same mountain as somany great athletes.Therewas somemind-boggling skiing and riding, making for some great eye candy. As the saying goes, “When one doorcloses, another opens” and here I am now, as Rocky Mountain’s Training and Education Manager.

So, what’s going on in theTraining and Education realm with PSIA/AASI - RM?Snowsport School Directors have been requesting that we offer courses that better meet the needs of the new age Snowsports Instructor. Inresponse to this request, we have made two major changes this year.

The first change relates to the way courses are offered to our members. We’ll begin with a question for you:Howmany courses did PSIA/AASI offer last season?

a) 68 b) 95 c) 127 d) None of the Above

I was surprised to learn that PSIA/AASI offered 127 courses. In the past, these courses have been listed by discipline andmost members lookonly to their discipline for courses available. We have identified current courses that have cross discipline relevance and grouped them to-gether to help build diversity in the way you teach and interact with the clients. This year’s curriculum guide lists all the educational coursesconsidered to be cross discipline and job specific under the Professional Development Guide.Wewould encourage you to begin to expandyour knowledge. Next time you’re selecting a course for your clinic credits; – choose from the expandedmenu offering you courses from alldisciplines.

The second change is the launching ofThe Professional Development Series which will offer you the opportunity to earn a Bachelor orMas-ters Degree in Snowsports Instruction. This pathway is open to members with a minimum prerequisite of PSIA/AASI Level 2. Anyone choos-ing to pursue the Professional Development path will be required to take a series of core courses and elective courses. We believe theseofferings will round out your education while you reach the number of credits (20) required. All courses, ‘Core’ and ‘Elective’ will be avail-able to all disciplines of snowsports. Learn more about the Professional Development Pathway in the curriculum guide, available onlinewww.psia-rm.org by the end of September.

We are excited to announce that in addition to the existing courses, we have a few new courses including Communication and Relation-ship Building, X Discipline, Adaptive Mania, andTheWhole of It Broken Down.

That’s it for the moment – it’s time to get out and enjoy these late summer days.

The SnowboardWorldBy Tony Macri

I hope this article finds everybody enjoying a healthy and fun summer. As you begin to wrap up your summer activities and watch the leaveschange color, I hope you are getting as excited about the upcomingseason as we are. After a busy summer of planning, we have contin-ued to develop our curriculum offerings.

New this season is a half pipe improvement clinic. This clinic willfocus on improving your skills in the pipe from beginner all the waythrough to advanced. We recognize that not everyone has the oppor-tunity to ride the pipe that much, especially since some of you maywork at resorts that don’t have a pipe. We have found that when somefolks go to either a certification prep clinic or a freestyle accred clinic, some of you want to spend the majority of the time in the pipe. Andwhile we would love to spend all day in the pipe with you, this canbe difficult at these events because we also need to spend time onother facets of the exam process. This event will be the answer. Youwill get some excellent coaching with progressions and video analy-sis to help improve your pipe riding.

Lastly we recognize that this season most of you will be very busywith the lack of the international employees and most of the schoolsmay be under staffed. Please look at the schedule as soon as you canand plan accordingly.

Get those last rides on that mountain bike in and prepare those legsfor another long season of epic powder days. Catch ya on the slopes.
