Annual Report ofPSG Institute of Management 2013

PSGIM is one of the leading management

institutes in this part of the country. One of

the pioneers in history after the inception of

Indian Institute of Managements, PSGIM

started as the Management Department

under the PSG College of Technology to cater

to the ever growing need of management

graduates in this region which witnessed an

industrial and entrepreneurial leap of faith

that continues till today.

The department saw itself grow into a

standalone management institution. With the

PSG & Sons Charities evincing a keen interest

in management education, the Institute grew

wings and expanded its reach with

international alliances and collaborations and

became a most sought after business school.

The ingraining of entrepreneurship in its

wards is perhaps is one of the best

achievements of this institution which has

churned out innumerable entrepreneurs and

corporate citizens who have left a trail in the

industrial and corporate corridors of this

nation.

Today as the country makes its way to lead

the comity of nations, PSGIM is well poised to

contribute and be a part of the larger scheme

of things in nation building.

A part of 26 institutions under the PSG brand,

today PSGIM has evolved into a full-fledged,

autonomous management institute.

The Institute is approved by AICTE &

affiliated to the Anna University of

Tamilnadu.

Dear friends,

I am delighted that PSGIM is bringing out an annual report.

I am sure this will be a rewarding experience to revisit the

year gone by.

With initiatives like this, I am sure PSGIM will stand out

and lead the PSG Institutions to glory. As one of the

leading management institution, PSGIM has always set

benchmarks and that to me is excellence which has

become a habit today.

A lot of initiatives from academic research to consultancy

to industry interaction has seen the institute reach the

pinnacle of success and these measures will continue to

transform management education and bring laurels to our

esteemed institution.

I take this opportunity to commend the team headed by

our Director Dr. R Nandagopal for bringing out such a

wonderful report.

I wish all the very best and hope this will usher in a way of

celebrating our achievements in a more classic way than

ever before.

Director’s desk Dear friends,

I take immense pleasure in presenting this annual report.

At PSGIM, we believe that we should inculcate the

corporate values which we teach and this is one of the

steps in that direction to have an Annual Report. As you

can see, this report is a reflection of our attitude and

global aspirations that we are looking to achieve.

This will be a great resource in a way that it tracks our

activities, in the class, outside the class room and even

cultural activities which we believe can impart and

nurture more the humanistic values.

It is to the glory of the institution that we have some of

the best faculty members and best students from this part

of the world.

At PSG Institute of Management the emphasis has always

been to be entrepreneurial and industrious as is our

legacy. With this, we give students ample opportunities to

excel themselves in the co-curricular and extra-curricular

activities. We also span a host of cultural events to relive

and appreciate the flavour of our great nation's heritage

and tradition and this helps them to be the global Indian.

We have also had a lot of achievements in faculty and

students and these are now recorded very well in the

pages to follow. There are special pages on research and

consultancy which is an important part of our academic

and industry link initiatives and this has helped us grow

ourselves to be the thought leaders in many frontiers.

This annual report will be an excellent reference to our

achievements and a benchmark to the next academic year.

As they say the pleasure is in the journey and education is

one journey that has no end.

Dr. R Nandagopal

Director, PSG Institute of Management

I also would like to place on record the excellent work put

in by our faculty team and the contribution of our

students.

It's worthwhile to stop and

look back, those moments

give you a sense of the

past and what the future

beholds, and that moment is

NOW.

PSGIM Marketing Stream conducted a stakeholder

interaction event on “FDI in Retail: Boon

or Bane” on October 15th 2012. The recent

announcement by the Central government to relax

investment norms for foreign direct investments,

especially in multi-brand retailing has expectedly

run into rough weather. Whereas India Inc, by and large

seem to support this move, Bharat has not

welcomed this with open arms. Even the policy makers

themselves at the state level have found no

merit in it and yet the central government deems this

move a sin qua non to energize GDP, to get

infrastructure financing and reduce inflation whilst

benefitting the poor with more jobs and cheaper

goods.

Under the guidance of our director, 2nd year marketing

students of PGDM conducted a survey across

four cities of Tamil Nadu – Coimbatore, Salem, Madurai

and Trichy, to find out the perception of stakeholders

namely consumers, wholesalers and retailers towards FDI

in multi-brand retail.

The results of the survey was deliberated upon by a panel

of distinguished members consisting of C.R. Baskaran,

spices and nuts wholesale and retail business executive;

D.Srinivasan, head, Hoteliers Association; Thuran Nambi,

journalist, Pasumai Vikatan; P. Kanagasabapathi, Swadeshi

Movement; K. Kathirmathiyon, secretary, Coimbatore

Consumer Cause, and Dr. R. Nandagopal, Director, PSG

Institute of Management.

Dr. P. Kanagasabapathi, author of various management

books moderated the discussion. The panel

members unanimously felt that the entry of big box

foreign retailers in multi-brand retail would definitely

impact local retailers and the benefits foreign retailers

bring to the country in terms of supply chain, employment

and funds were grossly exaggerated and misconceived.

The survey along with the recommendations made by the

students and the panel members would be sent to policy

makers at the highest level in the centre.

PSGIM participated in a lot of CSR activities throughout the year. The institute has become active in the social media with an official page in Facebook. It has also initiated various campaigns to enhance its visibility across the country.

In March 2013, few of the II MBA Anna university students

participated in a wildlife census in the Krishnagiri forest

range. The census was for two days and they trekked

15-20 kilometers to gather direct and indirect evidence of

the existence of wild animals. The census was done by the

Tamilnadu Forest Department and the NGO KANS.

In the month of March 2013, approximately 35 students

from IInd Anna MBA, undertook a 'Clean Race Course'

campaign at the race course walking grounds.

With the construction of buildings in the traditional

elephant migratory corridors on an increase, the human-

elephant conflict has also increased. In the month of

March 2013, 35 students from II year Anna MBA, enrolled

themselves to be part of a study to understand the impact

of human-elephant conflict in Coimbatore. They visited

regions like Narasimhanaickenpalayam,

Periyanaickenpalayam, Govanoor, Paalamalai etc.,

collected data and feedback from the villagers.

On March 7, eleven students of IInd year Anna University

MBA, eco-volunteered their services at the Velliangiri

temple. During Shivrathri, people congregate in large

numbers to climb the mountains, and during the journey

the visitors also generates significant amount of waste,

which negatively affects the pristinity of the forest region.

The role of the students were to frisk the visitors and to

remove cigarettes, beedi, matchsticks, candy wrappers,

plastic covers, paan, cigarette lighters, etc. from the

travelers. This was a non-stop ten hour night volunteering

event.

46

A cleanliness campaign was held on 17th February, 2013

at the Coimbatore Railway Junction. Around 70 students

from the IInd year Anna MBA had participated in the

campaign with intent to spread the message of

Cleanliness and Avoidance of Plastic. The students carried

huge bins and cleaned the railway station. They went

around the railway platforms with hoardings, displaying

slogans about the importance of Cleanliness and

Environmental Safety. The response from the public was

overwhelming, and the students were appreciated for

their efforts. Saplings were given to the station master as

a sign of promoting green practices.

The students of PSGIM distributed blankets to pavement

dwellers and helped them brave the cold during winter.

They were inspired by the Sri Sathya Sai Youth Movement

members, who did the same in Mumbai. Travelling on two-

wheelers, the students braved the cold nights of eight

days, to distribute 306 blankets at locations like

Peelamedu, Singanalur, Nava India, Hopes College,

Ramanathapuram, Gandhipuram, 100 Feet Road, Avinashi

road, Near Coimbatore Airport, Near Railway Station,

Ukkadam Bus stand, Near Govt. Hospital, Saravanampatti,

(and crackers) to 63 members of PSG Sarvajana Manavar

Illam (60 children and 3 caretakers), and shared a

sumptuous meal with over 200 members. It was an

occasion of joyous celebration filled with light, a bustle of

noise and excitement. In addition to that the students

distributed dresses/ crackers to 18 MALTANG support

staffs, 6 PSGIM Security personnel and Anaikatti

Rajendran & Family.

During various points of the academic year, students

made paper bags out of old and used newspapers and

these were distributed to pharmacies that provided

medicines to the general public at a reduced price from

the retail cost (Shanti Pharmacy – 18%, PSG Pharmacy –

10% etc.). The students would have distributed

approximately 1500 paper bags during the academic year.

Breakfast Club – It was understood in an informal

discussion that parents of nearly 90 children studying in

PSG Sarvajana Higher Secondary School can afford to

provide only one healthy meal a day. Breakfast being the

most important meal of the day, and free lunch being

offered by the Government of TamilNadu, PSGIM as a

humble attempt, formed the Breakfast Club to arrange a

nutritious breakfast for those kids. With the support of

Management and Faculty members of PSGIM, this

initiative had its start on July 2, 2012. Around 10,000

breakfasts has been served till February 2012.

Pre-marital counseling session - Mr Naachimuthu, Assistant

Professor, HR stream, organized a day long pre-marital

counseling session for girl students on August 16, 2012.

Arts, STC (Pollachi), and PSGIM participated in this session.

The revenues generated from this session was channelised

to 'Breakfast Club' endeavors.

Cleaning of plastic waste from the forest regions near

Athikadavu. This was done in association with the

permission of forest department and guidance from OSAI.

The students collected an equivalent of three sacks plastic

waste from the forest regions. They also visited a tribal

village near that area and gifted clothes and snacks to

tribal people there.

Donating Rice Grains to the Hungry through FreeRice.com

– Through this project, PSGIM students have donated more

than 5,00,000 rice grains to the hungriest of the world (in

countries like Bangladesh, Bhutan, Combodia, Congo,

Haiti, Nepal, Pakistan and Uganda) through a website

FreeRice.com, a project of United Nations World Food

Programme (WFP). The video we made for this project

gained kudos from World Food Programme, with they

commenting on YouTube, “We like the sound track, thanks

for sharing us and for helping us to "rice up" against hunger

:) we shared your video on our official Facebook page.”

48

During July 2012, some of the students of the Executive

MBA programme undertook collection of waste plastic

from Lamb's Rock and Dolphin's Nose, Coonoor.

Students of PSGIM visited the Cheshire home located

nearby Peelamedu and conducted a medical camp for

them.

As part of the Onam celebrations, the students visited

Families for Children (FFC), a home for destitute children,

located in Podanur. This home has a special care center

for children who are mentally and physically challenged.

The students gifted cerelac, biscuits, dress materials, dolls

and toys, bananas and groceries for the inmates of FFC.

The students and the faculty also sponsored a library to

children/ inmates of the PSG Saravajana Manavar Illam.

Students of first year and second year PGDM offered their

assistance to 'Project Greenhands', a grassroots level

ecological initiative of Isha Foundation, by preparing

around 4000 mud moulds for tree saplings.

Life @ PSG IM

- KR Venkataraman

It has been the best two years of my education. The overall feeling is that of goodness & I am happy to be a part of this great institution. And the peers have been absolutely great. The staff have made a great impact on me personally. I am highly indebted to them

India and the U.S. are drawing together in a thousand synergistic ways, and the specific areas of focus are education, environment, health, and business, said Jennifer A. McIntyre, U.S. Consul General, Chennai, here on Saturday.

Delivering the address at the commencement programme of PSG Institute of Management (PSGIM), she said that having travelled widely in South India and the U.S., it was evident that the future would witness exciting collaborations between the countries.

Obama's visit

“In 2009, President Obama and Prime Minister Singh established the Indo-U.S. Strategic Dialogue. The fourth dialogue is being scheduled to be held in New Delhi this June and since 2009 both the Governments have established over 20 working groups that regularly meet at the national level to discuss policies, exchanges and opportunities reaching across the full range of human endeavours to include areas of space, science, health, Defence, business, environment, education and much more.” Ms. McIntyre said.

Education

One of the greatest challenges facing the two countries was how to educate well the growing youth populations. India and the U.S. enjoy hundreds of educational collaborations, both at the private and individual levels, and also with initiatives sponsored by our Governments through fellowships, student and faculty exchanges, and institutional partnerships, she added.

A new area of collaboration was the Obama-Singh 21st Century Knowledge Initiative (OSI), a $ 10 million programme for education institutions to work on innovative projects together.

On the environment front, under the U.S.-India Energy Dialogue, the countries were seeking to identify opportunities for enhanced engagement to further mutual goals of energy security, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and transitioning to low-carbon, clean energy sources.

In the area of health, the U.S. Centre for Disease Control (CDC) and the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) worked closely through India’s Government offices to take forward a range of collaborative programmes and co-fund research on infectious diseases, reproductive health, vision, mental health and neurology.

India and the U.S. were witnessing annual increases in mutual trade and investment, and the enormous untapped potential provided a lot of opportunity to aspiring business leaders and entrepreneurs. While Governmental initiatives are really exciting, the real strength of the India-U.S. relationship is our people-to-people ties. Hence, the collaborative programmes at PSGIM bring together global institutions and a diverse student body,” the Consul General said.

She gave away degrees and awards to 330 passing out candidates of the programmes of MBA of the Anna University, MBA of the University of Toledo, Executive MBA of Anna University, PGDM of Anna University, and MS Mechanical in Automotive Engineering of University of Toledo.

L. Gopalakrishnan, Managing Trustee of PSG & Sons’ Charities, administered the oath to the candidates, while Lloyd A. Jacobs, President of University of Toledo, conferred the degree to those receiving the degree from the foreign university.

The other dignitaries who were present, included Thomas W. Sharkey, Dean, College of Business and Innovation, and Nagi G. Naganathan, Dean, College of Engineering, of University of Toledo, P.V. Mohanram, Dean, Autonomous Functioning, PSG College of Technology, and R. Nandagopal, Director, PSGIM.

PSG Institute of Management (PSGIM) has launched “I Drive Safe”, a video campaign on Facebook to create awareness and educate people on safe driving.

The campaign is based on the premise that safety on roads is possible only by exercising self-discipline and making them realise the perils of unsafe driving that is the result of lack of discipline.

According to R.S. Sathyanarayanan, Assistant Professor, PSGIM, who initiated this, the campaign is just a beginning. The institute has planned on more campaigns to address other societal evils and issues too.

“Road accidents have become common in India. It is sad that the number of fatal accidents have gone up. During 2011, there were 4.97 lakh reported accidents in the country, out of which 24.4 per cent were fatal,” Mr. Sathyanarayanan said.

The major reasons for these were, drunk driving, over speeding, not wearing helmets and seat belts, etc.

In addition to the video campaign, the institute is planning to conduct road shows, screening of the video in theatres, etc.

Those who are interested can access the videos on the Facebook page of PSGIM –www.facebook.com/psgim. The institute has asked students and public to visit the page to take a look at the video, give suggestions, and like and share with their friends.

All 75 of them were on a treasure hunt on Saturday.

But it was not merely about cracking clues and finding destinations.

It was much more. They got to travel more than 70 km, answer questions about Coimbatore, solve brain teasers, and buy products that were available in select outlets that were located on the hunt route.

On the whole it was about knowing Coimbatore and it was consciously designed so by faculty and students of PSG Institute of Management to go with the flavour of the Coimbatore Vizha.

Though 24 teams – 13 cars and 11 two-wheelers – began the hunt, only 12 teams made it to the final destination.

According to R. Jagajeevan, Knowledge Facilitator of the institute, the faculty and students got together and came out with the four phase format after much deliberation.

The theme of the hunt was ‘temples.’ Though it did not sound too difficult, the uniqueness about it was that none of the temples was within the city limits.

The four destinations that had to be ‘found’ in four phases were located nearly 15 km to 20 km away from one another.

The first one was at Kovilpalayam, the second at Karuvalur, third at Vagarampalayam, and the last one was a different kind of a temple – it was a temple of learning where Rabindranath Tagore sung the national anthem – the PSG Sarvajana School.

Once the team reached the first phase destination, it was given clues to find the destination of the second phase.

Likewise, it was designed for the third and fourth phase.

Though the fill-in-the-blanks and brain teasers could be answered using internet, participants had to be enterprising to solve the clues for finding the destination and the things that had to be bought. The winners were judged based on the points they got in all these and not from merely having reached the destination.

Temples help them get treasure

50

R. Nandagopal, director of the institute, said that they had travelled the treasure hunt route to spot certain select shops from which the participants could buy the things. That the hunt was not easy could be seen from the fact that only half the number of teams made it to the final destination.

At the end of it, some of them had to agree that they did not know Coimbatore well.

Winners

With 74 points, two teams shared the first place in the four-wheeler category.

Kunal Valecha and his team, and Danur Venkatesh Devarajan and his team, will receive purses of Rs. 4,000 each.

The team of Mukthar Ahmed and V.R. Karthikeyan with 66 points will receive a purse of Rs. 5,000 as first prize in the two-wheeler category, at a function to be held next week.

The 87th Founders’ Day of PSG & Sons’ Charities on Thursday saw six distinguished alumni from the PSG Institutions being honoured for their contribution to society.

Clarion call

Felicitating them, the chief guest of the function T. Kannan, chairman and correspondent, Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai, made a clarion call to educational institutions to gear themselves up for the future where India would be one of the preferred educational destinations for foreign students.

“There are many changes happening in the educational and industrial fronts. Leading institutions such as PSG should be forerunners in taking up the task of rejuvenating the educational system by giving an impetus to mentorship, which is based on our traditional ‘Gurukulam’ model,” he said.

He called for life-long learning, innovation and multi-disciplinary education, to cater to the needs of an empowered and enriched India.

Lamenting over the limited interest among academia in Intellectual Property Rights, he urged faculty to focus on research and applying for patents.

Distinguished services

The alumni who were recognised for their distinguished services were K.K. Ramachandran, chairman and managing director, Sharp Pumps Private Limited, N. Rajendran, managing partner, Surfine Tools, G. Soundararajan, vice-chairman, CRI Pumps Private Limited, R. Palaniswami, chief executive, Rangasayee Alloy Castings, Jayakumar Ramdass, managing director, Mahendra Submersible Pumps Private Limited, and Aravind Srinivasan, director – Projects, Aravind Eye Care System, Madurai.

L. Gopalakrishnan, managing trustee of PSG & Sons’ Charities, presided over the function. R. Rudramoothy, principal of PSG College of Technology, presented a report on the activities of the PSG Institutions.

S. Ramalingam, principal of PSG Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, and R. Nandagopal, director of PSG Institute of Management, spoke.

The second edition of the Coimbatore Business Quiz was conducted for teams of two by Coimbatore Quiz Circle as part of Coimbatore Vizha 2013 at PSG Institute of Management on Sunday.

The quiz began with a preliminary written round of 25 questions. Six teams cleared the prelims to battle through seven rounds at the finals. Quizzers Yogesh Pai and Govind V. won the first place, while Sheilendra and Priya Bhansali came second, with V. Lakshmanan and N. Krishnakumar in third place. The questions ranged from Coimbatore’s business history to its unique products, business achievements and awards, and local brand advertisements, logos and mottos.

The evening opened with quizmaster M. Rangarajan screening a logo of Swelect and requesting quizzers to guess the company’s product, one currently vital for Coimbatore.

The answer was electricity. The remaining 24 questions were along similar lines. by offertale.com (food), the Coimbatore connection to Vijay TV Kitchen Super Star (all vegetables are provided by Kovai Pazhamudir Nilayam), the first Coimbatore jewellery outlet to feature a celebrity endorsement (P.A.
