Psalms, Hymns and Prayers of Adoration “God is worthy of our praise irrespective of our circumstances” Rev. John S. Mahon “The chief end of man is to glorify God and to enjoy Him all of our lives” (Shorter Catechism – Westminster Confession) Adoration is the worship of God without reference to our circumstances. It is to praise Him and to adore Him for who He is and what He does. Very little of what passes for worship is indeed the worship of God. Most worship times begin something like this, “Lets start our time together by spending a few minutes in worship of God. Why don’t we go around in prayer and each of your praise God for something.” At which time people begin to pray, “I praise God for getting me a job”; “I praise God for healing my aunt”; “I praise God for this wonderful building in which we are meeting” and the list goes on. Actually what is taking place is Thanksgiving rather than Adoration. In each instance the individual is thankful to God for what God has done for him or for someone he knows. He is worshiping God through thanksgiving for those actions of God which he or some person directly benefits. This is not wrong but it is not true adoration. Just because we put the word “praise” in the prayer does not make it adoration. God is worthy of our adoration, our praise irrespective of our circumstances. Adoration is the worship of God without reference to man and the benefits man derives. When I first began to spend daily time alone with God I often baffled by passages such as Psalms 145:1-2 “I will extol You, my God, O King, And I will bless Your name forever and ever. Every day I will bless You, And I will praise Your name forever and ever.” How was this possible? How could I praise God for having a bad day? How could I praise God when everything went wrong? How can I praise God when my world is crashing down around me? We praise God for good things, but how can I praise Him “every day” when so many of my days are bad? What I came to understand in my study of Praise and Adoration is that God is worthy of my praise for who He is and what He does irrespective of my personal circumstances. One of God’s divine attributes is that He is holy. God is worthy of my praise for His holiness whether I am having a good day or bad. Another divine attribute is His mercy. Again God is worthy of my praise for His mercy no matter my life’s circumstances. This is when we truly understand the Adoration and Worship of God. When we begin to worship Him for who He is and what He has done without reference to ourselves. The angels who surround the throne understand this as revealed in Revelation 5:12 “ saying with a loud voice, ‘Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing’." We worship God not for what He had done for us or for others but rather simply for who He is and what He has done. The worthiness of God to receive praise and adoration is totally unconditional and without reference to our circumstances. We have no part and we play no part in the worthiness of God to receive honor and glory and blessing. It is ours to praise and adore Him daily. To do this we must first understand the attributes and nature of God. At the end of this Quiet Time series is a list of the attributes of God. A word of caution. If you find it hard to worship one of God’s divine attributes this reveals sin in your life. We must never, never, never question the character and nature of God as revealed by His holy, eternal, inspired and inerrant written Word. We submit to this revelation totally.

“God is worthy of our praise irrespective of our circumstances” Rev. John S. Mahon

“The chief end of man is to glorify God and to enjoy Him all of our lives” (Shorter Catechism – Westminster Confession)

Adoration is the worship of God without reference to our circumstances.

Let us now revisit the scenario - “Lets start our time together by spending a few minutes in worship of God. Why don’t we go around in prayer and each of your praise God for something.” At which time people would begin to pray, “I praise you that you are the creator”’; “I worship you as merciful God”; “O Lord we adore you as the faithful and loving Father”; “You O Lord are the wrathful judge and we worship You” and so one. Actually man is so selfish that as you begin this you will find it awkward and perhaps even sterile. In our sinful, selfish minds it is hard to recognize anyone, including God for anything that does not in someway benefit us or those around us in some small way. We bring this selfishness to prayer but the discipline of opening your prayer time in true worship and adoration will be of great long-term spiritual benefit if you will but learn to submit to it and your position before God. This Quiet Time series begins with one week of meditations on the subject of Worship and Adoration. Passages have been specifically chosen to help you in this. Then it is followed by Psalms of Worship and Adoration. You will notice that not all Psalms are pure Worship and Adoration but the emphasis is there never-the-less. I would encourage you to, in addition to working your way through the daily devotionals provided to in addition work your way through the attributes of God provided. First: Begin your Quiet Time by going to the end of this series and praising God, without reference to man for the “attribute of the day”. Allow the passages selected to shape and guide your understanding and your adoration of God for this attribute. Having done that put a “check”, or as the British say a “tick” by the attribute. Second: Pray and ask God to speak to you from His Word. I often pray this short prayer provided for us by God the Holy Spirit from the Psalms. Psalms 119:124-125 Deal with Your servant according to Your lovingkindness And teach me Your statutes. I am Your servant; give me understanding, That I may know Your testimonies. Third: Read the passage provided from the holy, eternal, inspired, inerrant, written Word of God. Fourth: Allow the questions provided with the Quiet Time sheet to guide your prayers and meditations, closing your time in prayer, in the same way you began, in worship of God, without reference to yourself. You may want to close with a hymn of praise and I have included a number for this purpose (or you may choose your own.) My God bless you and may He open your eyes to the wonderful truth that every day may be spent in the glorious worship and praise of God, irrespective of our own circumstances of life, because of who God is and what He has done. The Attributes of God (For specific quiet time meditation sheets on the attributes of God go to www.gciweb.org )

1. Adopter

Romans 8:15-17 For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, "Abba! Father!" The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him in order that we may also be glorified with Him. Galatians 4:4-7 But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, in order that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, "Abba! Father!" Therefore you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir through God. Let him proclaim and declare it; Yes, let him recount it to Me in order, From the time that I established the ancient nation. And let them declare to them the things that are coming And the events that are going to take place. Isaiah 45:5 I am the LORD, and there is no other; Besides Me there is no God. I will gird you, though you have not known Me; Isaiah 46:9-10 Remember the former things long past, For I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is no one like Me, Declaring the end from the beginning, And from ancient times things which have not been done, Saying, ' My purpose will be established, And I will accomplish all My good pleasure';

64. Unity/(Indivisible/Simplicity) Matt 28:19 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, John 10:30 "I and the Father are one." Colossians 2:9 For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form, John 17:22 "And the glory which Thou hast given Me I have given to them; that they may be one, just as We are one;

67. Wrathful (O that you would help me embrace the justness of Hell with the same conviction, zeal and faith with which I embrace the unjustness of heaven.) Psalm 21:9 You will make them as a fiery oven in the time of your anger; The Lord will swallow them up in His wrath, And fire will devour them. Psalm 38:1 (A Psalm of David, for a memorial.) O Lord, rebuke me not in Thy wrath; And chasten me not in Thy burning anger. Psalm 89:46 How long, O Lord? Wilt Thou hide Thyself forever? Will Thy wrath burn like fire?

68. Warrior Exodus 15:3 The LORD is a warrior; The LORD is His name. Isaiah 42:13 The LORD will go forth like a warrior, He will arouse His zeal like a man of war. 69. Zealous Isaiah 9:7 There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, On the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness from then on and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will accomplish this. Isaiah 59:17 And He put on righteousness like a breastplate, and a helmet of salvation on His head; and He put on garments of vengeance for clothing, and wrapped himself with zeal as a mantle. Ezekiel 5:13 'Thus My anger will be spent, and I will satisfy My wrath on them, and I shall be appeased; then they will know that I, the LORD, have spoken in My zeal when I have spent My wrath upon them. John 2:17 His disciples remembered that it was written, "Zeal for Thy house will consume me." (Zeal can be proactive, counterbalancing a culture of negativism. A zealous man will speak up when his God, his church or his leaders are attacked. To remain silent is not a virtue when a zealous response is called for in the midst of confrontation or dispute.)

Words That Describe God Which Are Valid Yet Do Not Occur In Scripture: The question “Is it Biblical?” is different from the questions, “Does the word appear in the Bible?” There are many Biblical words which sum up a doctrine or an attribute of God which do not technically occur in the Bible. The modern Pentecostal Church in America will vehemently reject the “Trinity” saying that “Nowhere in the Bible does the word ‘Trinity’ occur.” Of course they are immediately faced with a problem because nowhere in the Bible does the word “Bible” occur. We accept and use many Biblical or Doctrinal summation words in the church and in the ministry. None of these actually occur in the Bible but never-the-less it is not sinful nor unbiblical to use them. Examples being: Bible; Funeral; Sacrament; Clergy; Niece: Responsible; Available; Transparent; (when used in inter-personal relationships) In addition there are Biblical terms which are used to describe and understand God which are not found in the Bible. These are summation terms which bring together concepts which are Biblical. Examples being: Trinity; Transcendent; Omnipotent; Omnipresent; Omniscient; Emotional; Immutable; Self-existent; Self-sufficient; Unique.

A Personal Study Project: Many teach that the God of the Old Testament is a God of Wrath and that the God of the New Testament is the God of Love. This flawed view of the Scriptures holds that two very distinct god’s or views of God are given in the two Testaments. This is based on the conviction that the books of the Bible are primarily influenced by man and not the exclusive domain of God the Holy Spirit. As you reflect on the list of attributes make a list of those attributes which you feel would fall under the category of “The God of Love” and another list for the “God of Wrath”. Now turn to the Word of God and seek out a verse or passage for each attribute, one in the Old Testament and on in the New Testament..

Holy, Holy, Holy Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee: Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty God in three persons, blessed Trinity! Holy, Holy, Holy! All the saints adore Thee, Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee, Who wert and art, and evermore shalt be. Holy, Holy, Holy! Though the darkness hide Thee, Though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see; Only Thou art holy – there is none beside Thee Perfect in power, in love and purity. Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty! All Thy works shall praise They name in earth and sky and sea; Holy, Holy, Holy! Merciful and mighty God in three persons, blessed Trinity! (Reginald Heber - Born: April 21, 1783, Malpas, Cheshire, England. Died: April 3, 1826, Trichinopoly (Tiruchirappalli), Tamil Nadu, India, of a cerebral hemorrhage while bathing. Buried: St. John’s Church, Trichinopoly, Tamil Nadu, India (north side of the altar). Heber attended Brasenose College, Oxford, where he won a number of awards in English and Latin. He received a fellowship to All Souls College, and later became Rector at Hodnet, Shropshire, England. In 1823, he became, somewhat reluctantly, Bishop of Calcutta, India.) All Hail The Power Of Jesus Name All hail the power of Jesus’ name! Let angels prostate fall; Bring forth the royal diadem, and crown Him Lord of all; Bring for the royal diadem and crown Him Lord of all! Ye chosen seed of Israel’s race, Ye ransomed from the fall; Hail Him who saves you by His grace and crown Him Lord of all; Hail Him who saves you by his grace and crown Him Lord of all. Let every kindred, every tribe, on this terrestrial ball, To Him all majesty ascribe, and crown Him Lord of all; To Him all majesty ascribe and crown Him Lord of all. O that with yonder sacred throng we at His feet may fall! We’ll join the everlasting song and crown Him Lord of all’; We’ll join the everlasting song, and crown Him Lord of all. (Words: Edward Perronet 1726-1792 Perronet, son of an Anglican minister, descended from French Huguenots who fled the continent to escape religious persecution. For a time, Perronet was a co-worker of John and Charles Wesley. John Wesley was always trying to get him to preach, but Perronet, though capable, was somewhat in awe of Wesley, and always deferred to him. Any time John Wesley was present, Perronet felt Wesley should do the preaching. But John Wesley was not one to take “no” for an answer. So, one day, in the mid-dle of a meeting, he simply announced, “Brother Perronet will now speak.” Thinking quickly, Perronet stood before the large crowd and declared, “I will now deliver the greatest sermon ever preached on earth” (you can imagine he got everyone’s attention). He then read the Sermon on the Mount, and sat down.)

Alleluia! sing to Jesus! (Page 347 Book of Common Prayer)

Alleluia! sing to Jesus! His the scepter, His the throne. Alleluia! His the triumph, His the victory alone. Hark! the songs of peaceful Zion thunder like a mighty flood. Jesus out of every nation has redeemed us by His blood.

Alleluia! not as orphans are we left in sorrow now; Alleluia! He is near us, faith believes, nor questions how; Though the cloud from sight received Him when the forty days were o’er Shall our hearts forget His promise, “I am with you evermore”?

Alleluia! bread of angels, Thou on earth our food, our stay; Alleluia! here the sinful flee to Thee from day to day: Intercessor, Friend of sinners, Earth’s Redeemer, plead for me, Where the songs of all the sinless sweep across the crystal sea.

William Chatterton Dix 1837 – 1898 Dix’ father, a surgeon, wrote a biography of poet Thomas Chatterton, and gave his son his middle name in his honor. Young William attended the Bristol Grammar School. Later, he managed a marine insurance company in Glasgow, Scotland, but his heart was in the poetry of worship. He wrote more than 40 hymns over the course of his life. His works include the much loved Christmas hymn What Child Is This

To God Be The Glory To God be the glory, great things He has done; So loved He the world that He gave us His Son, Who yielded His life an atonement for sin, And opened the life gate that all may go in. Refrain O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood, To every believer the promise of God; The vilest offender who truly believes, That moment from Jesus a pardon receives. Refrain Great things He has taught us, great things He has done, And great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son; But purer, and higher, and greater will be Our wonder, our transport, when Jesus we see. Refrain Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, Let the earth hear His voice! Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, Let the people rejoice! O come to the Father, through Jesus the Son, And give Him the glory, great things He has done. Frances Jane Crosby Born: March 24, 1820, Putnam County, New York. Died: February 12, 1915, Bridgeport, Connecticut Fanny Crosby was probably the most prolific hymnist in history. Though blinded by an incompetent doctor at six weeks of age, she wrote over 8,000 hymns. About her blindness, she said: “It seemed intended by the blessed providence of God that I should be blind all my life, and I thank him for the dispensation. If perfect earthly sight were offered me tomorrow I would not accept it. I might not have sung hymns to the praise of God if I had been distracted by the beautiful and interesting things about me.” In her lifetime, Fanny Crosby was one of the best known women in the Unit-ed States. To this day, the vast majority of American hymnals contain her work.

O For A Thousand Tongues

O for a thousand tongues to sing My great Redeemers praise, The glories of my God and King, the triumphs of His grace. My gracious Master and my God, Assist me to proclaim, To spread thro all the earth abroad, the honors of Thy Name Jesus! The name that charms our fears, That bids our sorrows cease, Tis music in the sinners ears, tis life, and health, and peace. He breaks the power of canceled sin, He sets the prisoner free, His blood can make the foulest clean, His blood availed for me.

On this glad day the glorious Sun Of Righteousness arose; On my benighted soul He shone And filled it with repose.

Sudden expired the legal strife, ’Twas then I ceased to grieve; My second, real, living life I then began to live.

Then with my heart I first believed, Believed with faith divine, Power with the Holy Ghost received To call the Savior mine.

I felt my Lord’s atoning blood Close to my soul applied; Me, me He loved, the Son of God, For me, for me He died!

I found and owned His promise true, Ascertained of my part, My pardon passed in heaven I knew When written on my heart.

Look unto Him, ye nations, own Your God, ye fallen race; Look, and be saved through faith alone, Be justified by grace.

See all your sins on Jesus laid: The Lamb of God was slain, His soul was once an offering made For every soul of man.

Hear Him ye deaf, his praise ye dumb, Your loosened tongues employ; Ye blind behold your Savior come; and leap, ye lame for joy.

Early Methodists believed that the Holy Spirit was received at the point of salvation. The manifestations of the Holy Spirit during the time of the great awakening in England and America was not the mystical tongues, gyrations and ecstatic manifestations of Christians going to a higher level but rather the desperate panic of men, convicted of their sinfulness and clearly faced with the prospect of eternity in Hell. Repentance from sin, not health, wealth and spiritual power characterized these events.

(Charles Wesley Born: Decem-ber 28, 1707, Epworth, Lincoln-shire, England. Died: March 29, 1788, London, England. Wesley wrote this hymn to commemo-rate the first anniversary of his conversion to Christ. This origin is reflected in the lyrics, “On this glad day the glorious Sun of Righteousness arose.” The stanza that begins “O for a thou-sand tongues to sing” is verse seven of Wesley’s original po-em. This work first appeared in Hymns and Sacred Poems in 1740.)
