DESCRIPTION

In Hebrew, the word for "angel" (messenger) adds to 91. Yet Tehillim/Psalms 91 speaks of the heavenly messengers and their protection of those who trust His Name. And to our amazement, 91 is the misparim numerous other Hebrew words related to this topic.

The Numbers of the Words by Craig Wm. Peters

Psalm 91, the Malakim, and the White, Linen Ephod

a The Hebrew word, “malak” ( Kalm, mă-LĂK), means “messenger.” This is the word which most Scripture translations typically render as, “angel.” 1 Readers will note the word “malak” is a major part of the prophet Malachi’s name2 – a name which means, “My messenger.” Of course, this was a most fitting name for the prophet since Malachi (Mălă-KEE) was an earthly messenger of hwhy.3 Further, we are shown the work of heavenly messengers throughout the Word of hwhy.4 The misparim value for “malak” in the Hebrew language is 91: ← ← ←

91 = (20) K + (1) a + (30) l + (40) m = Kalm = malak = messenger = angel

We believe it is not coincidence, then, that these heavenly messengers are mentioned in Psalm 91:

9 Because you have made hwhy, which is my refuge, even the most High, your habitation;10 there shall no evil befall you, neither shall any plague come near your dwelling. 11 For He shall give His messengers charge over you, to keep you in all your ways. 12 They shall bear you up in their hands, lest you dash your foot against a stone. 13 You shall tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the cobra you shall trample under feet. 14 Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he has known My Name. 15 He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honor him. 16 With long life will I satisfy him, and show him My salvation. Psalm 91:9-12

Numerous accounts show these heavenly messengers have, indeed, delivered the people of the Most High at many times and in many ways:

• By blinding immoral reprobates: Genesis 19:9-11. • By blinding an approaching army: 2Kings 6:12-23. • By slaying a host of armies gathered in battle against Yisrael: 2Kings 18:17-19:36, 2Chronicles 32:15-23, Isaiah 37:36-38. • By protecting men inside a burning furnace: Daniel 3:8-30, Hebrews 11:32-34. • By strengthening those who were weak. 1Kings 19:4-8, Daniel 10:1-19, Matthew 4:11, Luke 22:40-43, Hebrews 1:13-14 • By protecting men from the mouth of lions: Psalm 91:11-13, 1Samuel 17:33-37, Daniel 6:19-23.5 • By breaking chains and opening doors to deliver men from prison: Acts 5:17-25, 12:5-19.

Further, even in our days we have reports from people who have seen evidence of angelic deliverance:

1 “Malakim” (messengers) is the Hebrew plural for “malak” (messenger). 2 Pronounced “Mala-KEE” in Hebrew. 3 Malachi 2:7, 3:1, 4:4-6. Of course, every other prophet was a messenger of hwhy, but the greater significance of Malachi’s name lies in the fact that his prophecies declared the coming of both Yochanan the Immerser – the forerunner of the Messiah (Malachi 3:1, Mark 1:2-5) – as well as the Ultimate Messenger of the Covenant, eswhy the Messiah, the Sovereign. Malachi 3:1 4 Psalm 34:7, 103:20,21, 104:4, Daniel 8:15-19, 9:21,22, 10:1-19, Luke 1:19-20, Hebrews 1:7,13,14 5 We regard the mention of protection from lions (in Psalm 91) to be prophetic of Daniel’s eventual deliverance in Babel/Babylon. Further, this promise from Psalm 91 may well be the very Scripture over which Daniel prayed so as to possess the faith which stopped the lions from devouring him. Hebrews 11:32-34 Nevertheless, we are told it was a heavenly messenger which gave power and results to such prayer. Daniel 6:19-23

• A child run over by a car with tire tread-marks on her chest, but no bodily injury. • Babies who are seen falling in slow motion from a height which would otherwise cause injury. • Missionaries who are saved from violent natives by the presence of big men, dressed in white.

The One who never changes has always been pleased to dispatch these heavenly messengers for bringing deliverance to those He is calling (or will call) to fulfill His eternal purposes in the earth.

The White, Linen Ephod

While these things are already deeply amazing and powerfully miraculous, there is still more significance to the misparim value of 91 which the Spirit has assigned to the word “malak.” The Hebrew word, “ephod,” has the very same misparim value as “malak.” Yet the ephod is the white, linen garment worn by these heavenly agents! Yes! The Hebrew word, “ephod” (dwpa, pronounced, ā-PHŌDE) – as in the white, linen ephod – also has a number value of 91: ← ← ←

91 = (4) d + (6) w + (80) p + (1) a = dwpa = ephod

It is not coincidence that this garment’s misparim value is 91 since, throughout the word of hwhy, we see heavenly messengers dressed in the white, linen ephod:

1 Then he cried in my ears with a loud voice, saying, You cause those who have charge over the city to draw near, every man with his destroying weapon in his hand. 2 And behold, six men came from the way of the upper gate, which lies toward the north, every man with his slaughter weapon in his hand; and one man in the midst of them clothed in linen, with a writer's inkhorn by his side. And they went in, and stood beside the brazen altar. 3 And the splendor of the Elohim of Yisrael was gone up from the cherub, whereupon it was, to the threshold of the House: and He called to the man clothed in linen, who had the writer's inkhorn by his side. 4 And hwhy said to him, Go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Yerushalayim,6 and set a mark upon the foreheads of the men that sigh and that cry over all the abominations that are done in the midst thereof. 5 And to the others he said in my hearing, You go through the city after him, and smite: let not your eye spare, neither shall you pity; 6 slay utterly the old man, the young man and the virgin, and little children and women; but come not near any man upon whom is the mark: and begin at My Set Apart Place. Then they began at the old men that were before the House. 7 And He said to them, Defile the house, and fill the courts with the slain: you go forth. And they went forth, and smote in the city. 8 And it came to pass, while they were smiting, and I was left, that I fell upon my face, and cried, and said, Ah Sovereign hwhy!7 Will You destroy all the residue of Yisrael in Your pouring out of Your wrath upon Yerushalayim? 9 Then He said to me, The iniquity of the house of Yisrael and Yehudah is exceedingly great, and the land is full of blood, and the city full of perverting of judgment: for they say, “hwhy has forsaken the land, and hwhy sees not.” 10 And as for Me also, My eye shall not spare, neither will I have pity, but I will bring their way upon their head. 11 And behold, the man clothed in linen, who had the inkhorn by his side, reported the matter, saying, I have done as You have commanded me. Ezekiel 9:1-11; see also, 10:1-7.

Daniel wrote this of one of his encounters with a heavenly messenger:

5 I lifted up my eyes, and looked, and, behold, a man clothed in linen, whose loins were girded with pure gold of Uphaz: 6 his body also was like the beryl, and his face as the appearance of lightning, and his eyes as flaming torches, and his arms and his feet like burnished brass, and the voice of his words like the voice of a multitude. Daniel 10:5-6; see also, 12:5-7.

6 Translated in English as, “Jerusalem.” 7 We will see the phrase, “Sovereign hwhy” also has a clear connection to the work and ministry/service of the heavenly messengers.

Page 3: Psalm 91, the Malakim, and the White Linen Ephod

3

Heavenly messengers were present (and seen) at the resurrection of the Messiah:

2 And behold, there was a great earthquake; for a messenger of hwhy descended from heaven, and came and rolled away the stone, and sat upon it. 3 His appearance was as lightning, and his clothing white as snow: 4 and for fear of him the watchmen trembled, and became as dead men. 5 And the messenger answered and said to the women, Fear not; for I know that you seek eswhy, who has been impaled. Matthew 28:2-5; see also Mark 16:5-6, John 20:11-13, Acts 1:10-11, Revelation 15:6

At the coming/return of the Messiah, heavenly messengers will come forth with Him dressed in white linen:

And the armies which are in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and pure.

Revelation 19:14

This latter Scripture is a reference to the Armies of Heaven which are prophesied to come forth with the Messiah and will be sent forth to gather His elect from the four corners of the earth. Matthew 24:30-31, Mark 13:24-27

The Spirit reveals it is not only the heavenly messengers of hwhy which are clothed in the white, linen ephod; His earthly messengers also don this garment in His Presence as they seek His will:

4 And these are the garments which they shall make; a breastplate, and an ephod, and a robe, and a embroidered coat, a mitre, and a girdle: and they shall make set apart garments for Aharon your brother, and his sons, that he may minister to/serve Me in the priest’s office. 5 And they shall take gold, and blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine linen. 6 And they shall make the ephod of gold, of blue, and of purple, of scarlet, and fine twined linen, with cunning work. Exodus 28:4-6, 36-43

23 And Aharon shall come into the tabernacle of the congregation, and shall put off the linen garments, which he put on when he

went into the qadosh place, and shall leave them there. Leviticus 16:23

But Samuel ministered/served before hwhy, being a child, girded with a linen ephod.

1 Samuel 2:18

And the king said to Doeg, Turn you, and fall upon the priests. And Doeg the Edomite turned, and he fell upon the priests,

and slew on that day eighty-five persons that wore a linen ephod.8 1 Samuel 22:18

And David danced before hwhy with all his might; and David was girded with a linen ephod.

2 Samuel 6:14, 1 Chronicles 15:25-29; see also 1Samuel 23:6-13, 30:6-8

The white, linen garment intends to reflect the purity in heart which hwhy desires in those who serve Him:

He who loves purity of heart, favor is on his lips: the King is his friend.

Proverbs 22:11

8 This incident is evidence of the murderous spirit which had taken over King Sha’ul. We note the priests – the earthly messengers of hwhy (Malachi 2:7) – all wore the linen ephod.

Page 4: Psalm 91, the Malakim, and the White Linen Ephod

4

Who shall ascend into the hill of hwhy? And who shall stand in His Set Apart Place? He that has clean hands, and a pure heart;

who has not lifted up his soul to falsehood, and has not sworn deceitfully. Psalm 24:3-4

hwhy, who shall sojourn in Your tabernacle? Who shall dwell in Your set apart hill? He that walks uprightly,

and works righteousness, and speaks truth in his heart. Psalm 15:1-2

The sinners in Tsiyon are afraid; trembling has seized the irreverent ones: “Who among us can dwell with the devouring fire?9 who among us can dwell

with everlasting burnings?” He that walks righteously, and speaks uprightly; he that despises the gain of oppressions, that shakes his hands from taking a bribe,

that stops his ears from hearing of blood, and shuts his eyes from looking upon evil. He shall dwell on high.10 His place of defense shall be the munitions of rocks.

His bread shall be given him; his waters shall be sure. Isaiah 33:14-16

The white, linen ephod speaks of spirit and truth:

But the hour comes, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and truth: for such does the Father seek to be

His worshippers. Elohim is a Spirit: and they that worship Him must worship in spirit and truth. John 4:23-24, Psalm 51:6,10,17

The Word “Amein”

While the above facts are already awe-inspiring, there is still more significance to the misparim value of 91 which the Spirit has assigned to the word “malak.” The Hebrew word for “amein”11 – the word meaning “surely,” “certainly,” “so be it” – also has the very same misparim value as “malak.” The Hebrew word, “amein” (Nma) has a number value of 91: ← ← ←

91 = (50) N + (40) m + (1) a = Nma = amein

The messengers/angels of hwhy are also called the messengers/angels of His people, and the Messiah tells us they are continually in the Presence of the Most High:

Take heed that you do not despise one of these little ones; for I say to you, that their messengers in heaven do always behold

the face of My Father which is in heaven. Matthew 18:10

In other places, the heavenly messengers are called “watchers” – implying that they always see and know what is occurring throughout all the earth. Daniel 4:17, 2Chronicles 16:9 This writer believes whenever we confirm words spoken on earth by using the word “Amein” – whether these are words spoken in prayer12 or in conversation13 – the utterance of the word “Amein” gives the heavenly messengers leave to carry those words into the heavens as the burning incense which ascends before

9 Deuteronomy 4:23-24, Isaiah 30:27, Hebrews 12:29 10 Psalm 91:1, Ephesians 2:4-6 11 We have intentionally rendered this word in English as “amein” to convey its Hebrew pronunciation: awe-MĀNE. 12 Matthew 6:13, 2Corinthians 1:20 13 Numbers 5:22, Deuteronomy 27:15-26, 1Kings 1:32-39, Nehemiah 5:13, Jeremiah 28:5-17, 1Corinthians 14:15-16. The earthly messenger binds his words (or the words of someone else) with the “Amein.” The heavenly messengers – who have been given charge of the people of Elohim – see that this word is bound in the heavens. Matthew 16:18-19

Page 5: Psalm 91, the Malakim, and the White Linen Ephod

5

the Face of hwhy in the House.14 In this way, what is bound on earth is also bound in heaven.15 If anyone thinks we are merely hypothesizing, especially in relation to prayer, the Word of hwhy declares the truth of what we are saying:

3 And another messenger came and stood at the altar, having a golden censer; and there was given to him much incense, that he should offer it with the prayers of all the chasidim16 upon the golden altar which was before the Throne. 4 And the smoke of the incense, which came with the prayers of the chasidim, ascended up before Elohim out of the messenger’s hand. 5 And the messenger took the censer, and filled it with fire of the altar, and cast it into the earth: and there were voices, and thunderings, and lightnings, and an earthquake. Revelation 8:3-5

So we see the heavenly messengers have a part in the ascent of prayers before Elohim. By the way, it was at the time of the incense offering that the people outside the House were praying and the heavenly messenger, Gabriel, appeared to Zecharyah to announce the prayers of the priest had been heard and that he would soon have a son named “Yochanan.” Luke 1:5-20

The Messiah Revealed as the Sovereign hwhy

The 91st Psalm is a song of great promise and miraculous deliverance: those who have trusted in its lines have also been miraculously preserved, and many have lived to give testimony to amazing deliverances based on the faith which was imparted by the words of this psalm.17 And no wonder: not only are all of the above number connections true, but the very signature of the Sovereign hwhy is stamped upon this song of praise: in Hebrew, the title “Sovereign” and the Name of “hwhy” add together to form a sum of exactly 91! ← ← ←

= hwhy ynda = hwhy Adonai18 = Sovereign hwhy ← ← ←

91 = (5) h + (6) w + (5) h + (10) y + (1) y (50) n + (4) d + (1) a

We believe this fact reveals the psalm being considered is a revelation of considerable significance, indeed. Dr. Bullinger aptly points out the title “Adonai” is used in connection with the special, sovereign rule of hwhy in the earth.19 We believe the title “Adonai” used in connection with the Covenant, Memorial Name makes for a most riveting, overwhelming combination by which the Spirit intends to retain our attention at no small level. Those who know and revere His Qadosh20 Name, hwhy, will also know the working of His sovereign Kingdom in, around, and through their lives. hwhy not only states His people will know His Name,21 He promises to set on high those who have set their love upon Him by honoring that Name:

Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him: I will set him on high because he has known My Name.

Psalm 91:14

14 Exodus 40:26-27, Numbers 16:36-40, 1Samuel 2:28 15 Matthew 16:19, 18:18. Further, this is at least one way the Word of hwhy goes forth from His mouth and returns to Him in the Heavens having accomplished what He sent it to do. Isaiah 55:10-11 16 “Chasidim” is the Hebrew word which means “kind ones.” True recipients of His chesed/lovingkindness return that chesed to hwhy and to their fellow man. 17 During World War I, members of the 91st Brigade agreed to recite Psalm 91 daily. The men of this battalion fought three of the bloodiest battles of World War I – the Argonne, Chateau-Thierry, and Belle Wood. While other units engaged in these conflicts suffered casualties of up to 90%, none of the men in the 91st Brigade lost their lives in battle-related casualties. 18 “Adonai” is a pure Hebrew word which means “sovereign,” or “master.” 19 See Companion Bible notes in Appendix 4 (on page 7 of appendices). 20 Set Apart, Sanctified 21 Psalm 9:10, Isaiah 52:6, Micah 6:9, Matthew 6:9, John 17:11-12, 26, Hebrews 2:11-12, Revelation 14:1, 22:4

Page 6: Psalm 91, the Malakim, and the White Linen Ephod

6

This same truth is also stated by Shelomo/Solomon in the Proverbs; just as the psalmist wrote, those who take refuge in the Name of hwhy are set on high:

A strong tower is the Name of hwhy: the righteous runs into it, and is set on high.

Proverbs 18:10

It is our belief that speaking “the Shema”22 before hwhy in prayer is the ultimate fulfillment of this text:

Not only is the Name of hwhy spoken twice in the Shema, but the Shema gives expression to the believer’s mindset to love the

Elohim of Yisrael with all the heart, soul, mind, and strength.23

Those who sincerely love the Name of hwhy24 and who express that love via the Shema, are set on high: they are set on high in the secret place of the Most High;25 they are blessed with the love and protection of a sovereign Creator. Since the Messiah, the Messenger of the Covenant, taught the Shema to be the greatest commandment of the Torah,26 we proclaim the Scripture seen in Psalm 91:14 is ultimately prophetic of the Savior being resurrected and set on high with hwhy in the heavenly places! Of this we read:

… 18 the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, and what are the riches of the splendor of His inheritance in the chasidim, 19 and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power, 20 which He brought about in the Messiah, when He raised Him from the dead, and set Him at His own right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age, but also in that which is to come: 22 and has put all things under his feet, and gave Him to be the head over all things to the assembly, 23 which is His body, the fullness of Him that fills all in all. Ephesians 1:18-23

No one has ever fulfilled the Shema as did eswhy. No one has ever loved the Name of hwhy more than the Messiah. So eswhy was set on high and made both Sovereign and Messiah; the very Name of hwhy was bestowed upon Him,27 and He was set as Sovereign over all:

Let all the house of Israel therefore know assuredly, that Elohim has made Him both Sovereign and the Messiah, this eswhy whom you impaled. Acts 2:36

eswhy is the Sovereign hwhy of whom Psalm 91 is prophetic! Yet we, like Him, may also be set on high because of what the Messiah has done for us:

… 4 but Elohim, being rich in lovingkindness, for His great love wherewith He loved us, 5 even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with the Messiah (by favor you have been saved), 6 and raised us up with Him, and made us to sit with Him in the heavenly places, in Messiah eswhy, 7 that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His favor in kindness toward us in the Messiah eswhy. Ephesians 2:4-7

Not only is the eswhy the “Messenger (Malak) of the Covenant,”28 He has also been made the Sovereign of all:29 As High Priest, He bears the Name of hwhy,30 and He reveals the Name to us so

22 “The Shema” is seen in Deuteronomy 6:4-5. The word, “hear” in Hebrew is “shema” (shŭ-MÄ) 23 Mark 12:28-30 24 Isaiah 56:6-7 25 Psalm 27:5, 31:20, 91:1, Isaiah 26:20, Zephaniah 2:3, Matthew 6:6 26 Matthew 22:35-38, Mark 12:28-30 27 Philippians 2:9

Page 7: Psalm 91, the Malakim, and the White Linen Ephod

7

that we might be continually delivered.31 The Messiah is the Sovereign hwhy who sets His people on high. Hence, Tehillah 91 is ultimately prophetic of the One who is the Sovereign hwhy – the One who was, and who is, and who is to come.32 Tehillah 91 reveals the Messiah as the Ruler of the Messengers, the Sovereign hwhy.

If there remains any doubt as to the veracity of this matter, when Isaiah saw a vision of the Sovereign hwhy, he was completely in awe and overwhelmed.33 We know this was a vision of the Messiah and the splendor which He shared with hwhy the Father even “before the world was,”34 since Yochanan/John tells us Isaiah was seeing and testifying of the splendor of eswhy while He was yet in the heavens.35 And the circle is completed with absolute clarity when we hear the Messiah declaring Himself to be the Amein, the Faithful and True Witness:

And to the messenger of the assembly of the Laodiceans write: “These things say the Amein, the Faithful and True Witness,

the Beginning of the creation of Elohim.” Revelation 3:14

This statement leaves no doubt that eswhy the Messiah is both the Amein (91) as well as the Sovereign hwhy (91). It is just as Sha’ul ha’sholiach36 openly declares: eswhy is the Sovereign hwhy before Whom every knee will bow:

9 Therefore, Elohim has also highly exalted Him, and given Him a Name which is above every name: 10 that at the name of eswhy

every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that eswhy the Messiah is hwhy, 37

to the splendor of Elohim, the Father. Philippians 2:9-11

Because He was made “the surety of a better covenant,” all the promises of hwhy are a certainty (amein) in Him:

For all the promises of hwhy in Him 38 are “Yes”, and in Him “Amein,” to the splendor of Elohim by us.

2 Corinthians 1:20

Summary Tehillah 91 is a testimony of the deliverance which heavenly messengers render to those who will inherit salvation.39 While faithful children of the Most High are not always delivered from death and injury, a great number have certainly been rescued by heavenly messengers on many occasions in many awesome ways. Those who testify to having seen heavenly messengers report they are big men, dressed in white (and that their physical appearance/presence is often overwhelming). Not

28 Malachi 3:1. The prophet Malachi pointed to the Ultimate Messenger (Malak) of hwhy, the Messiah of Yisrael. 29 Matthew 12:8, Mark 2:28, Luke 6:5, Acts 2:36, 10:36, Ephesians 1:19-23 30 Hebrews 5:5-10, 6:19-20, 7:15-17, 21-26, Philippians 2:9, Exodus 29:1,6, 39:30-31, Leviticus 8:9 31 John 17:26 32 Revelation 1:8 33 Isaiah 6:1-10 34 John 6:62, 17:5 35 John 12:37-41 36 (i.e., the emissary, or sent one) 37 The Aramaic Peshitta text renders occurrences of hwhy (the Tetragrammaton) as “MarYah,” and this is one such place where this word is seen. 38 That is, in the Messiah! 39 Hebrews 1:13-14

Page 8: Psalm 91, the Malakim, and the White Linen Ephod

8

coincidentally, the Tagalog word for “big” is “malaki” (ma-la-KEE) – a word pronounced identically to the Hebrew, “Malachi” (ma-la-KEE), a word meaning, “My messenger.”40

We should be clear in saying hwhy does not deliver anyone for their personal greatness:41 His deliverance is based on His plans for the life of an individual, a people, or a nation. He will not allow anyone or anything to thwart His eternal plans and purposes42 even if this requires His direct and personal intervention! hwhy ever wields His sovereignty over all things, even when we do not perceive it!43 Each believer should greatly rejoice in being allowed to partake in His Kingdom purposes even if we never knowingly experience a miraculous deliverance of any sort! Our intent is not to revel in supernatural deliverance, but to be thankful for His supernatural Spirit working righteousness within and around us by teaching us the wisdom and importance of His immutable Torah44 and, thereby, writing it on our hearts and minds.45 The Spirit’s work in writing the Torah on tables of the human heart is the greatest miracle of all! This great miracle was made possible by the Offering of eswhy the Messiah for the sins of the world.46 Sincere believers must always remember: true deliverance is being kept from evil,47 even if our commitment to follow the Messiah will someday cost us our physical lives at the hands of those who do not believe. May all our readers continually draw near to hwhy through the blood of the Messiah48 and dwell in the secret place of the Most High; therein, we will ever abide under the shadow of Shaddai.
