1 2 3 Choose Why Why are you fasting? Is it for spiritual renewal, for guidance, for healing, for spiritual strength, or simply to be with God? Starting your fast with a definite purpose will help guide you and help you pray more specifically. Choose What How long will you fast - One meal, one day, one week? It is recommended to start gradually. You may like to begin with one meal, then one day, then three, seven or even up to ten days. Some people chose to fast regularly each week, ie, one meal on a particular day, or the whole day each week. What type of fast will you undertake - Food, TV, your mobile? What physical or social activities will you restrict to gain the most out of your fasting time? How much time will you put aside to pray and read God’s word? Having a plan to commit too will help you get the most out of your fasting time, and will help you too not get as easily distracted. Beginning Your Fast Fasting does require reasonable precautions & preparation. You may want to consult your Doctor if you have an you concerns about your ability to fast safely. (Especially if you take prescription medication or have a chronic ailment.) It is a good idea to prepare yourself for your fast: Do not rush into you fast. DuringYourFastHereareafewsuggestionstoconsiderasyoufast:SetasidetimeforprayerandBiblereading.Youmayliketodothisinthetimethatyouwouldusuallyeatyourmeals.Youmayalsoliketogoonaprayerwalks,orlistentoorplaysomeworshipmusic.DowhateverwillhelpyoufocusonGodinthesetimes.

PhysicalSuggestions&Expectations:• Limityouractivity,andexercisemoderately.(Nomarathons.)• Makesuretotakemoretime(thanusual)torest.• Prepareyourselffortemporarymentaldiscomforts,suchasimpatience,

crankinessandanxiety.• Expectsomephysicaldiscomforts,especiallyonthesecondday.Youmayhave

fleetinghungerpains,dizziness,orthe‘blahs’.Withdrawalfromsugarandcaffeinemaycauseheadaches.Youmayalsofeeltired,weak,orextrasleepy.

• Ifyoufeelhungerpains,increaseyourliquidintake.Thefirsttwoorthreedaysareusuallythehardest.Asyoucontinuetofasthowever,youwilllikelyexperienceasenseofwell-beingbothphysicallyandspiritually.DavidYonggiChowrites–“Inmyexperienceonthefirstdayoffasting,thereisnosignificanteffectonthebody.Onthesecondday,hungerincreasesmoredramatically.Onthethirdandfourthday,thebodybeginstodemandfoodandyoufeelthefullphysicaleffectsoftheabstinence.Afterthefifthandsixthdays,thebodyadjuststothenewcircumstancesandyoufeelbetter.Whatishappeningisthatthebodyisnowmoreefficientinbreakingdownthebodyfatsthathavebeenstored.Aftertheseventhday,thehungerpainsdisappear,althoughthebodygetsmuchweaker.However,therecomesaclarityofthoughtandafreedominprayerthatisunusual.“

EndingYourFastWhenyourfasthascometoanend,itisimportantto‘easeyourway’backintoyournormalroutine.Itisnotadvisabletohaveaheavyfirstmeal,orcelebratewithanall-you-can-eatbuffet.Beginbyeatinggradually,startingwithsomelightsnacksthatincludefruit(likewatermelon)andvegetables.Smallerportionsthatincludesaladorsoupareagreatwaytoexitafast.Ifyouhavefastedforanextendedtime,aimtoincreaseyourintakeoffoodgraduallyoveraperiodofthreedays,returningtoyournormaldietbyday4.Ittakestimetobuildyourspiritualfastingmuscles!Ifyoufailatyourfirstattempts,donotbediscouraged,butletthisstrengthenyourresolveforthefuture.
