be with us in spirit,The rest of the summer, be with us in person. Living Thanks

“Thank you!” I exuded, after receiving a hefty bag of homegrown tomatoes. I set the produce on the kitchen floor; I would attend to it shortly. But I got distracted — for days.

Finally, I lifted the bag to make use of the gift, and the bottom fell out. Many of the tomatoes had become squishy, their juices soaking the paper beneath them. Instead of making good use of the generous gift, I was left cleaning up rotten tomatoes and throwing many of the veggies away.

We do the same with God’s gifts: “I’ll practice piano tomorrow … next week … next month …” until soon we don’t remember how to play at all. We pass up chances to visit someone dear and, when she moves away, regret squandering the friendship. We opt to sleep in instead of attending worship, unaware of what gifts of God’s Word and Christian fellowship we’ll miss.

Next time I receive something — from God or anyone else — may the Spirit help me not just give thanks but live thanks by using and enjoying the gift!

Thank you!! to all who help out in whatever way their talent allows them to each week. Whether you bake a cake, clean a table or just pass out a bulletin, hammer a nail or change a light bulb, you each are important to fill that spot or do that big or small task.

As the summer begins, thanks to those who volunteered to provide coffee hour during the year. Coffee hour can always be done during the summer (we now have air conditioning in our Fellowship Hall) and if anyone would like to volunteer some week, just call the office or let Pastor Ken know.

Nancy Walsh Doris Keller Liz Hamborsky The Power Of Pentecost Pentecost started as a Jewish festival commemorating God’s giving the Law

to the Israelites 50 days after they escaped from slavery in Egypt.

Just days after the risen Jesus ascended to heaven, his (Jewish) disciples gathered in Jerusalem to celebrate Pentecost. But God transformed the occasion by giving them the Holy Spirit, as he’d promised. The disciples saw something like flames among and on them, heard a rushing wind and began speaking in many languages. The pilgrims in Jerusalem heard about Jesus in their native tongues (see Acts 2:1-12).

In Christian churches, Pentecost was once as important as Christmas and Easter. Today, congregations still observe it in special ways, using the color red to symbolize the Holy Spirit’s power. Worship services sometimes include hymns, prayers and Scriptures in various tongues. To simulate the original

Pentecost experience, congregations may say the Lord’s Prayer in several languages at once.

Pentecost is Sunday, June 8th.

A verse for Pentecost God is like the wind, something no one

sees; Mighty as the gale, gentle as the breeze; With a hidden power no one can deny as

the days go by.

—From the hymn “God Is Like a Rock”

by Natalie Sleeth

Psalm 146 in the Bible warns us not to put

our trust in princes or mortals.

Today instead of princes, there are movie and TV celebrities, rock stars, and professional athletes, all set before us as if they were gods worthy of our worship and flattery.

They are placed on pedestals not because of their wisdom, purity, or goodness, but because their media handlers and the supermarket tabloids proclaims it. Their celebrity is a shiny thing that catches and holds our attention much longer than is deserved. Beware of false (American) idols, says the Lord.

Those who rule the nations have shown throughout history that power can lead people astray. Our leaders are no better or worse than the rest of us in this. “They” are all of us and each of us – people joined by agreements that are delicate at best. And so we render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, but are careful not to put too much of our trust in these political “princes”.

Our religious institutions point us toward the Lord and bring us together in worship, but they are not God. Because there are populated, managed, and maintained by mortals, these organizations are not exempt from the imperfections of this world. Priests, Pastors, Rabbis, and ruling elders are only as human as the rest of us, and they can fall prey to every human flaw and failing. God bless them, for their burden can be great.

All of our endeavors from the greatest to the silliest are susceptible to frailties, corruption and decay. They are not for us to worship. Only God is God and worthy of our worship and trust. We must put our trust in God and find our hope with God who was revealed in Jesus Christ.

Faithfully,

Pastor Ken

Father’s Day — More Than A Day

Father’s Day was first observed in America in 1910. In 1923 the third Sunday of June was set as the official day, and in 1924 President Coolidge recommended its national observance. Today it has a fixed place in the calendar of special days in our country. But devotion to and pride in fathers does not need to wait for official approval. As long as there have been families, love and respect for fathers has existed.

My Father It doesn’t matter who my father was;

it matters who I remember he was. —Anne Sexton

A little girl who’d grown up in the city spent some of her summer vacation out in the country. One starlit night, she and her dad stood gazing up into the sky without any harsh

streetlights obstructing the view. The girl, amazed by the sparkling view, exclaimed, “If heaven is so pretty on the wrong side, I wonder what it looks like on the right side!”
