Greetings to GRAMS readers!!

Thank God for this New Year:

With it comes an opportunity

To start anew—clean…

Yes, we have another chance

To leave old habits behind

By embracing that which gives us

Peace of mind:

Which comes with drawing closer

To our Father each day

And depending on Him

To show us The Way…

For His Way...His Will…

His Word, we know

Will take us in the direction

That we need to go

The direction that points

To our Savior and King

The giver of EVERY

Good and perfect thing!!

And so as we embark

On this brand

new year,

Let us walk with

our Savior

Who is ever near!!

Until next time,

Alberta W. C. Minters

With the be-

ginning of the

new year we

make resolu-

tions to lose

weight, get fit,

abandon bad

habits, adopt

good ones, and

even to "turn over a new leaf" about a lot

of things. Some resolutions we keep, and

so often, some we don't.

Since you're reading this article, you have

been blessed with the gift of life to see the

year 2013! Congratulations! We don't de-

serve what has been given to us, it is God's

grace...His unearned favor.

Let's consider a resolution to take time

each day in the coming year to express

thanks to God for his goodness and to oth-

ers for His glory. The Psalmist declared

that "I will bless the Lord at all times, His

praise shall continually be in my

mouth." (Psalms 34:1) How about a special

time each day? When we first open our

eyes in the morning, or when we pause

over a meal at midday, or as we fall asleep

at night, are all excellent opportunities to

regularly acknowledge our gratitude for

the countless things He does for us.

Another good resolution for 2013 would

be to regularly tune into "The Hampton

Roads Show" on the third Saturday morn-

ing of the month when Attorney Eric

Moody will give legal advice on air. His

next appearance will be on January 19 at 7

am on WKUS, 92.1 FM, and replayed on

102.9 FM, 105.3 FM, and 107.7 FM on

Sunday January 20 at 9:00 am. He has

over thirty six years of experience as a

lawyer and he has even served as a judge.

Also, Hampton University features

the attorney in a program on their campus

radio station, WHOV 88.1 FM, on the first

Thursday of the month, this

month on January 3 at Noon, for a live legal

question and answer program with Cheryl

Wilkerson called "It's The Law." For those

In Loving Memory of the Newtown, Connecticut

Sunny Brook School Deceased

By Dr. Daisy M. Murphy

Oh how deeply did our hearts pierce, When darkness moved in so fierce.

Coming unexpectedly from a place unknown, Where in sin and sadness hate had grown.

In spite of such horrible and tremendous waste,

To the love of God and His Word we must make haste. Only through the brightness of His light, Can we move forward to win this fight.

God is still on the throne doing what is right, Come now, let us ask Him for clearer sight.

Despite personal tragedies and surrounding gloom, In our hearts, we must all leave God room.

If we allow Him, His love like a broom,

Will sweep away and gradually remove the doom. No matter what life causes you to face,

With God on your side you will win the race.

Remember that through Christ, we can do all things, So look up and embrace what this new year brings. Chances to love each other more and do God’s will,

Chances His purpose for our lives to fulfill.

dren, relatives and friends were very proud to witness

this memorable occasion. His 13 year old grandson,

all of his life. Trustee Harvin was pinned with a bou-

tonnière and Steward Moon was presented with a

wrist corsage along with a bouquet of red roses. They

both received a plaque of appreciation, a monetary

gift and now carry the honored title, Emeritus.

Steward Emeritus Moon and Trustee Emeritus

The end of a

year is the time

to reflect on

persons who

have been a

blessing in our

lives and in the

lives of others.

This is the rea-

son the I. Sher-

man Greene

Chorale, Inc.

Board of Di-

rectors has chosen to pay homage to revered board

member, Dr. William (Bill) Gibson.

Dr. Gibson, a Portsmouth, VA native, is a prod-

uct of Portsmouth City Schools and a veteran of the

United States Armed Services. His education ac-

complishments include: graduate of I. C. Norcom

High School, Norfolk State University, Virginia

Commonwealth University, and Virginia Tech Uni-

versity. While enlisted in the Navy, he graduated

with honors from the United States Navy School of

Music. During his time in the Navy, his talents

earned him the honor of being named “Outstanding

Upcoming Jazz Bass Player” by Down Beat Jazz

Magazine.

Career accomplishments of William Gibson have

encompassed successful music appointments as the

first African-American band director at Cradock

High School in 1974 and in 1981, band director at

Manor High School. Additionally, Gibson held as-

sistant principal and principal positions in the

Portsmouth Public School System. Following his

retirement from Portsmouth’s New Direction Cen-

ter, he returned to his alma mater, Norfolk State

University, as an adjunct Professor in the Depart-

ment of Music.

Dr. Gibson is also a licensed minister who serves

as assistant minister at Saint John Baptist Church,

Portsmouth, where he has been a life-long member.

In spite of his battle with cancer in recent years,

Minister Gibson continued to bless the lives of el-

derly residents at Sentara Nursing Center, Ports-

mouth until his health prevented him from doing so

this past year.

Gibson’s illness has also prevented him from at-

tending the Chorale Board meetings, however, his

membership is cherished because he has been a de-

voted supporter of the board in past years. His com-

mitment was demonstrated when he recommended,

planned and chaired the first board Recognition

Banquet held at the Edmonds Center in Portsmouth.

Also, he regularly maintained a noteworthy dedica-

tion to the students in the Chorale.

The members of the board miss him and continue

to pray for him and his family. May God bless

them in 2013!

Answer to Black History Question on Page 8

Dr. Maulana Karenga created the African-American holiday, Kwanzaa, in 1966.

Happy New Year! How many times have you heard those words, more importantly, have you ever taken the time to think about what they really mean to you personally? All too often we set goals, priorities and in some cases deadlines to start our new year and sometimes within months or even weeks we have convinced ourselves that now is not the time to start something new, too many other things going on right now is what we tell ourselves. Someone once said that insanity is doing the same things over and over, but yet expect-ing different results. None of us are insane, therefore, we can expect different results because we know that in order to achieve them we have to change what we are doing in both our personal and professional lives... As this new year takes its shape and form, take a moment and self-reflect. What is it that you want to accomplish this year and how will you accomplish it? Who is holding you accountable and who is depending on you? I don't be-lieve it's necessary to make resolutions, I believe that every day we should strive to make a difference in whatever way we can. I don't believe it's necessary to have a bucket list when you live life to the fullest and on purpose. I do believe that we need to be accountable to ourselves and others and when we say that we are going to do something we should do it. I believe that we owe it to others to share what we have learned and experienced so that their path is made a little easier. Last year is in the past, so are the hurts, hopelessness and habits that held us back. This year we won't allow our fears, faults, failures or frustrations to keep us from achieving our milestones, regardless of their size. We should commit to a healthier lifestyle and be thankful for our Family and Friends that we share our lives with. I was at a retirement ceremony once, and I heard the speaker say now that I am retiring I can be a better person in every area of my life. While we will probably have more time to do things we love, we should never put be-ing better to anyone or anything on hold for the perfect time. Let this be a year of action. A year where goals are accomplished, action will stand over inaction, and personal and professional growth will be the priority. And while you are moving up and on to bigger and better things in 2013, en-courage others to do the same through your example, counsel and mentorship. Take the time to listen and truly hear when you are having conversations with others and be in the moment; don't let your mind wander off with all the mil-lion other things that need to be done, give them your full attention. Celebrate your victories and rejoice with others when they celebrate their own! Give credit when it's due and give of yourself when you can.

Celebrate the New Year and the new you! And remember Nike's slogan, "Just Do It."

when he did not respond. His named was

called three times, then “TAPS” was respect-

fully played. Veterans all

over the building were called

to attention and saluted. Eve-

ryone in the sanctuary stood

in reverence, honor and re-

spect for the fallen soldier,

Trustee Andrew A. Gray.

The purpose of Veterans’

Day as well as a strong ap-

preciation of Veteran’s be-

came real for all who experi-

enced this inspiring tribute.

JESUS CHRIST IS THE WAY “Living right” is not just about being good and doing good...It is about accepting Christ and His Plan of Salvation. If you want to know Him, it ‘s as easy as A, B, C…

Acknowledge that you are a sinner and in need of a Savior “All have sinned and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23)

Believe in your heart that Jesus Christ, the sinless Son of God, paid the price for your sins when He gave His life on the cross and God raised Him from the dead For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." (John 3:16)

Confess your sins by surrendering your life to Jesus, seeking His forgiveness, and turning away from a life of sin "For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation." (Romans 10:10)

To grow in Christ, become united with a Bible-believing church where you can let down your spiritual roots. Talk to God through prayer; listen to His voice as you read His Word; spread His Word by telling others about Him.
