    The Russian rabistV.I. Beliayev 1902-1976)was hefirst to mention he manuscript f an unknownbiographicaldictionaryn the manuscript ollectionof the St.PetersburgBranchof the Instituteof OrientalStudies.While workingon the collection n 1953,he singledout this manuscript,acquired in 1939 from the Astrakhanbook collectorS.A. Alimov, as of "outstandinginterest".Thescholar lsodeterminedtsprovenancesKhoremrandsuggestedhat tis an autograph opy dating o the twelfth cenhrry]. Themanuscriptwas later examinedby A. I. Mikhaylova (indrawingup a catalogue f Arabic manuscriptsn the collec-tion) andB. Z. Khalidov,who drew from it a biography fthe famousscholaral-ZamakhsharTf2l.ut it is only twodecades fter V. L Beliaev's nst comments n the manu-script hat his pupil, A. B. Khalidov,published more de-taileddiscussionf it in his two articles3].
