LNG Physical Properties
1 liter of LNG is equivalent to 600 liters of Natural Gas at 1 bar
LNG temperature at 1 bar is of -163 °C
LNG contains in average 95 to 98 % of methane
1 M3 of LNG = 4,14 barrels of oil in terms of energy content (=25,2 Gigajoule)
1 M3 of LNG = 460 Kg
CH4 molecule

Saturated LNG at 8 bar and -130°C
Cold LNG at 3 bar and -150°C

Natural gas as a substitute for diesel
7
– LNG is already purified at liquefaction stage, this is ensuring a high quality of delivered gas, trough the cryogenic cleaning of the gas
– Using LNG as a source of gas to fill vehicles will avoid to some gases like CO2 or N2 to be involved into the motor combustion.
– The engine manufacturers recommends: 90% methane (CH4) 4% ethane (C2H6) 2% propane (C3H8) 3 % nitrogen and co2 (N2+CO2) 0,5% oxygen (O2) 0,1% hydrogen (H2) 0,1% carbon monoxyd (CO) 0,3% others

Advantages / disadvantages of LNG for HDV’s compared to CNG
Advantages Disadvantages
CNG
Flexibility of the fuel Better refueling station network
(CNG + LCNG) Lower installation cost for the
vehicle conversion kits Proven technology Availability of commercial
vehicles
Autonomy of the vehicles Stations investment cost Station power requirements Heavy and large on-board
storages
LNG
Extended autonomy (2 to 3 times)
Higher purity fuel (90% CH4) Reduced on board storage size
(2 times less) Reduced on-board weight Lower investment cost for the
station per kg / min gas transfered
Reduced station operational costs
Only for regularly used vehicles Availability of LNG Availability of motor technology

Operational challenges:
• Boil of gas loses (Loss of product) Direct loss of €
• Station downtime (Loss of production) and spare parts (flexible hoses, nozzles)
• LNG quality (Temperature and density) Customer unsatisfaction
• Qualified workmanship (Personel safety) Safety first needs training
• Utilities (electricity, water, liquid nitrogen, others…)

19
Small Scale Liquefaction Plant
Based on our experience with the boil off gas re-liquefaction systems onboard LNG carriers CRYOSTAR has developed StarLiteLNG™ family product for onshore natural gas or biogas liquefaction applications with capacity from 20 to 200 tons per day.
Cryostar focuses on a skid-mounted liquefaction unit. For additional packages such as gas treatment, polishing and balance of plant, we offer a solution in collaboration with customers and our network of partners.

Typical « Expander Cycle »
Range of use: 10 to 200 t/day LNG
A pure refrigerant (typically nitrogen) is deep-cooled by expansion to condense the natural gas to LNG based on the Reverse Brayton / Claude Cycle.
Low sensitivity to feed gas changes
Easy to operate
Reverse Brayton / Claude Cycle
21
Small Scale Liquefaction Plant
Cryostar’s StarLiteLNG™ liquefaction technology relies on the principle of a closed nitrogen refrigerant cycle to produce the cold power needed to condense the natural gas.Caption: Cryostar compander with water inter-stage coolingA compander is a combined expander and compressor in a single, integrally-geared machine installed in the refrigerant cycle.
