INTRODUCTIONProximate analysis is the quantitative analysis of
food to determine the percentage of fat, fibre, protein,
carbohydrate, moisture and ash. (Merriam Webster
Dictionary)
An antimicrobial is an agent that kills
microorganisms or inhibits their growth. (Merriam
Webster Dictionary)
An antioxidant is a molecule capable of inhibiting
the oxidation of other molecules. (Sies, 1997) Eg
gallic acid and ferulic acid3

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES To estimate the determination of fat, fibre, protein,
moisture, carbohydrate and ash in aloe vera.
To determine the antimicrobial effect of aloe vera
extract using the agar well diffusion method.
To determine the antioxidant activity of aloe vera
extract using the DPPH free radical scavenging
method.

METHODOLOGYANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY OF ALOE VERA
8 serial dilutions of the extract and ascorbic acid(control)
each were prepared
2ml of DPPH reagent was added to each of the serial
dilutions
They were incubated in the dark for 30 minutes
Absorbance was measured at 517nm

CONCLUSION The Proximate analysis of aloe vera gel shows a high level
of carbohydrate and moisture with a little bit of protein,
mineral content and fat. Therefore it can be suitable for
human consumption.
Aloe vera has antimicrobial activity and can be used to
heal some diseases.
Aloe vera has antioxidant activity and can be essential to
human health.
