A couple of articles published recently have some medical ideas we retirees should find interesting. In an October issue of The Week magazine, a lengthy discussion dealt with the latest research findings on the aging process, all leading to the question of how long do human being want to live. Advances in medicine have already contributed to advancing average life expectancy from 46 in 1900 to 78 today.

A gerontologist has suggested that there is a 50-50 chance of bringing aging under decisive medical control within the next 25 years or so. Through research involving

genes, “scientists are hoping to train the body’s immune system to destroy cancer cells, tweak DNA to prevent healthy cells from dying, and create new organs through cell technology.”

Since organ failure is a major cause of death, we’re told that finding ways to create replacement should extend life by several decades. The exciting area of stem cell research is meeting with amazing success. Scientists have already developed functioning miniature livers and a full-beating mouse heart.

Both articles emphasize the

importance of telomeres on the ends of chromosomes (the structures inside each cell that contain the genes). A key to understanding the aging process is knowledge that cells repeatedly divide over the course of years to renew the body. In the case of older cells, the telomeres become shorter and frayed, ultimately dying. Some biologists argue that manipulating the genes to prevent telomeres from degenerating might stop aging all together.

An article in the Waco paper, “Ask Dr. K,” emphasized the

How Long Do We Want to Live? Continued from Page 1

fact that chronic stress causes cells to age prematurely. It leads to shorter telomeres, affecting cells that are older, closer to the end of their lives. Research also suggests that people with shorter telomeres are more likely to develop certain types of cancer, heart disease and dementia. So, there is the

possibility of slowing the aging of cells with stress-reduction techniques, especially physical activity and diet.

Scientists are making remarkable progress in aging research, but we have to ask again how long do we want to live. What about a world of 125

year olds? Imagine the stain on the environment and welfare systems. After all has been said and done, we retirees today are seeking to enjoy the life span we now have, treasuring our memories from the past.

My little Mom was frugal And as clever as could be. I discerned this as a lad: Nobody's fool was she!

There was a world of wisdom In Mama's deep-set eyes, But early-on I knew she wasn't Advertising-wise.

She put her trust in brand names. It was her rule of thumb: Only Crisco made good shortening And Wrigley’s made good gum.

If Dad brought home a different brand, As occasionally he would, She’d say, “I never heard of that! It can’t be any good.”

We all ate Light Crust biscuits With Mama’s guarantee Because the Light Crust Dough Boys Were on WBAP.

If she read it in a magazine Or the Dallas Morning News She knew that henceforth that must be The brand she had to choose.

She sent me for some Bayer’s To the pharmacy one day. I came home with St. Joseph’s And she threw them all away.
