June 2013

I can still vividly recall the groundbreaking for Providence Park in 2001. At the groundbreaking ceremony our first Administrator, Mike Sims, pointed out that Providence Park would have something that no other senior living community in Waco would have-- the heritage and the legacy of two great organizations. CHRISTUS The Regis/St. Elizabeth provided senior living and care in downtown Waco for 40 years, from 1963 to 2003. The Providence Healthcare Network has served Waco for more than 100 years. So when Providence Park began we were blessed by God with a foundation, a legacy, of

Providence Park Celebrates 10 Years

nearly 140 combined years of caring in Catholic healthcare.

I could not be more proud, that together, we have added another 10 years of caring service to that legacy. And I could not be more proud of my association with Providence Park, and all the men and women who serve

out their calling here, and the men and women who call Providence Park home.

This month we celebrate 10 great years, and with God’s blessing, we look forward to many great years to come.

Micheal Olmstead Administrator

Ms. Downing has chosen The Village as her new home here at Providence Park. She was born and raised in Waco and was away from her home only a short time while her husband served in the Air Force. They lived in Cheyenne Wyoming in 1944 and 1945. Ms. Downing and her husband owned Downing Brothers Construction. They had three children, and Ms. Downing was very

active with the PTA and instrumental in starting the band program at China Springs School. Her and her husband donated land for the baseball fields and Lions Club in China Springs. She loved golf and reading and she was also very active as a volunteer at Hillcrest Hospital. Ms. Downing has 9 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren with one on the way.

Welcome Dorothy Downing Apt. 1314

Mrs. Marie Horak is our newest resident at St. Elizabeth Place. She was born and raised in West, Texas and attended school there. She married Eugene Horak on August 4, 1947, and they have celebrated 66 years of marriage together. Mr. Horak worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad so they have lived all over the state of Texas. He retired in 1985, and they moved back to West to their dream home. They have traveled extensively enjoying three trips to Europe. Ms. Horak is a member of the

Catholic Daughters, KJZT Fraternal, Czech Heritage Society, Church of the Assumption, VFW Auxiliary, and the Railroad Club of Ennis, Texas. The Horaks lived through a hurricane in Galveston, but the recent tragedy with the West Explosion caused them to lose their dream home and most of their possessions. Ms Horak tells of an interview CBS did on the night of the explosion. She was very taken by the letters and prayers that she received afterwards. Mr. and Mrs. Horak both give

God all the glory for their survival. Please welcome Ms. Horak, and we look forward to Mr. Horak joining her at St. Elizabeth once he finishes rehab.

We want to welcome Mr. Jerry Benson to the Village. Mr. Benson grew up on a farm in Minnesota. He came to Baylor in 1960 and majored in Secondary Education and Biology.

In 1964 he entered the Air Force and his first assignment after training was flight instruction in the Air Training Command.

He married the first year of being in the Air Force. He and his wife made their home in Waco, Texas.

In 1969 he began his career with Delta Airlines and work as an airline pilot for 30 years. Mr. Benson retired in 1999.

He and his wife had two children. Mr. Benson’s daughter lives in Dallas and his son lives here in Waco. He also has 2 grandchildren.

Mr. Benson already has a few good friends living here at Providence Park and he is looking forward to getting to know more of the folks.

Welcome Jerry Benson Apt. 1117

A Bit about Robert and Elizabeth Barrett Browning

Recently Leon and Ginny Dobbs had the delightful opportunity of attending their grandson’s wedding here in Waco. The event did not take place in a traditional church setting; it was held on the Baylor campus in the Armstrong Browning Library, a popular site for special gatherings. It would not be at all surprising to read about a number of weddings scheduled there for the month of June.

Leon and Ginny were awestruck by the grandeur of the edifice with its towering columns of Italian marble and tall cathedral windows. And, if they happened to have looked toward the ceiling, they would have noticed the Italian garden scene painted around the edges of the ceiling. Since they entered the building in the rear at ground level, they missed experiencing the majesty of the main entrance, the enormous bronze doors that are copies of the portals to the cathedral baptistery in Florence, Italy. It was in that city that Robert and Elizabeth Barrett Browning made their home.

The focal point in the library’s grand Foyer of Meditation is the Cloister with the “Clasped Hands,” signifying the enduring love that Robert and Elizabeth had for each other during their courtship and throughout the 15 years of their marriage. The couple wrote over 500 letters to each other. Both were prolific writers. By far the most well known of Elizabeth’s poems begins with one of the most famous opening lines in the English language:

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. I love thee to the depth and breadth and height My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight For the ends of Being and ideal Grace. I love thee to the level of everyday’s Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light. I love thee freely, as men strive for Right. I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise. I love thee with a passion put to use In my old griefs, and with my childhood’s faith. I love thee with a love I seemed to lose With my lost saints, --- I love thee with the breath, Smiles, tears, of all my life! --- and, if God choose, I shall but love thee better after death.

Notes from the desk of Charles Tolbert

Browning ContinuedThe library has 62 magnificent stained-glass windows, most of which illustrate themes from the Brownings’ work. While the locale provides a powerful setting for telling their story, one has only to visit the library to catch a glimpse into their daily lives. The library staff conducts free tours on weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
