INTRODUCTION

The Other Film Festival and Arts Access Victoria are honoured to present our latest touring program in partnership with DADAA. These films showcase the quality of the last three festivals, and give a taste for what can be expected at the next festival in Melbourne in November this year.

The Other Film Festival delivers an invigorating disability-led program of screenings, talks, industry panels and workshops to foster the rich talent and experience of people with disability and screen practitioners with disability.

Despite the growing conversations and programs for diversity and inclusion in film and television, people with disability are still largely unseen, misrepresented and under-employed by the mainstream screen industries. The Other Film Festival challenges this by providing a platform to counter the stereotypes prevalent in popular culture and by advocating for change.

Our aim is to present a visionary film program of an inclusive society where people with disability are at the centre of the storytelling – not marginalised, imitated or spoken about.

We acknowledge the support of our major government partners Screen Australia and the City of Melbourne for The Other Film Festival touring program. Together we can create an inclusive screen sector and we look forward to meeting local screen practitioners with disability and other audience members in Fremantle.

We are extremely excited to work in partnership with The Other Film Festival and Arts Access Victoria to bring to Fremantle this internationally recognised inclusive film program.

DADAA has developed its digital and film-making program over many years, creating opportunities for people with disability to share their stories to the world. The digital team, led by Simone Flavelle, has created drawing and music apps for Ipads, explored virtual reality tools, and worked one-on-one with film-makers to bring the most intimate and interesting stories to the screen. Results of the recent Australia Council funded Mixed Reality project have been selected for The Other Film Festival 2018 program, being shown in Melbourne in November 2018.

DADAA’s move into the Old Boys’ School in Fremantle has provided us with the perfect surroundings to finally host a touring program from The Other Film Festival. This has been an ambition of DADAA for many years. On behalf of the Board and DADAA team, I thank Healthway for providing funding to make this dream happen. The funding has helped us make this festival inclusive and accessible, with enhancements such as Auslan interpretation, live captioning and audio description available for all panel discussions.

The funding has also helped us to present the inaugural Act-Belong-Commit WA Stories – a showcase of the very best films made by DADAA artists. The funding we have received means that everyone can join us in celebrating these Western Australian voices, that people with disability can lead their own storytelling and share them with everyone. True belonging is an act of sharing and celebrating in this forum helps build confidence, self-esteem and personal value, breaking down isolation and enhancing strong well-being.

We would also like to thank Screenwest, the state’s film-making engine room. Screenwest has sponsored the panel discussions we will hear over the weekend. DADAA and Screenwest continue to work in partnership to develop diversity to the film-industry through strategy, funding and development.

Thanks also to our other supporters for this weekend festival – Esplanade Hotel, Rydges and Clancy’s Fish Pub.

Enjoy!

David Doyle, Executive Director, DADAA
