Future and Emerging Technologies
Objective• To lay foundations of the ICT innovations of
tomorrow• To foster trans-disciplinary research excellence in
emerging ICT-related research domains• To help emerging research communities to organise
and structure their research agendaImpact• Create new long-term competitive options for ICT• Avoid ‘tunnel vision’ in FP7, by exploring
unconventional ‘minority’ options and opportunities off the beaten track
• Pathfinder role: prepare for future ICT directions in the WP

Future and Emerging Technologies2 Schemes: Open and Proactive
FET Open
• Open to any foundational ICT-related research• High-risk / high-potential impact• To shape emerging research communities and agendas• Coordination and international cooperation • 65 MEuro, continuous submission, CP (STREP only), CSA
(CA only)
Focused on a key challengewithin a long term-visionfor ICT

Future and Emerging Technologies2 Schemes: Open and Proactive
FET pro-active• Address fundamental cross-cutting long-term challenges
in ICT, such as:– Reconsidering the nature of computing and
communication– Addressing limits of miniaturisation and scale-up
(complexity)– Embracing ‘change’ of ICT systems as a feature, not
a problem– ICT-Bio convergence– Real/virtual confluence– Mastering ICT as a tool for organisational and
socio/economic transformation• Shape multi-disciplinary bridgeheads to address new
R&D roadmaps• 120 MEuro for 6 initiatives, Call 1 and Call 3, CP (STREP
and/or IP), CSA (CA only)
Require multi-disciplinaryand systemic research

MISSION– Pathfinder for ICT, detect new research trends– Harbour for exploratory R&D, nurturing new ideas,
helping areas mature – Widest possible spectrum, supporting topics not
covered elsewhere– Continuously open to unforeseeable ideas– Addressing problems of clear industrial or societal
relevance foreseen to occur in the long term

SUPPORTING RESEARCH (STREPS) Long term, visionary, collaborative and multidisciplinary, ICT
relevant research of a foundational nature and bright ideas of high-risk / high-payoff; aiming at a breakthrough, a paradigm shift, or at the proof of a novel scientific principle
OR Research refining the visionary ideas that have gone past the
proof-of-concept phase to bring them to the maturity level where they could be taken up by the mainstream ICT programme objectives
What is FET-Open ?

Provisional
COMMUNITY BUILDING (CAs) In any area of relevance to FET Emergence, shaping and consolidation of new and
dispersed research communities Aim at establishing critical mass, scientific
excellence and multi-disciplinary diversity, as appropriate, around a new scientific discipline or research topic, defining future research directions, federating the research communities around a common challenge and contributing to the preparation of joint programs of work.

1 stage submission & evaluation
2 stage submission & evaluation:
Short proposal (5 pages), anonymous, evaluated as soon as it is submittedIf short proposal successful, full proposal submitted by a given cut-off date, evaluated in batches

FET-Open Key Messages
Short STREP proposal strictly anonymous– No partner description, no bibliography
Enforced page limit (discarding surplus v/s EPSS?) Need for positioning with respect to a broad vision Continuation proposals
– Is not a simple ‘extension in time’– Need to show new challenging objective, building on the proof-of-
principle More critical comparison (with respect to the state-of-the-art) when inline with
a proactive (i.e. no more stop-gap, need to be complementary, not a catch-up) CA’s split FET-Open (new communities) / Proactive Evaluation procedure idem as before, only the forms & criteria changed (!
Scope now eligibility criterion !) In case of doubt => contact us first
